We substantiate our reassessment of marketing boards and the like by arguing that their success, but also the limits they face, come out of the mix of organizational properties and institutional rules in which they are embedded, providing them specific tools to deal with complex transactions submitted to strong asymmetries among parties while simultaneously creating rigidities. Our motivation comes from the observation that the exact role of such arrangements has often been blurred or even distorted (Beck et al., 1994;Hoos, 1979;Tamilia and Charlebois, 2007). The occurrence of marketing boards and the like in very different contexts as well as their resilience suggests that their specific combination of organizational and institutional properties translate into mechanisms through which they face coordination problems with some efficiency. ...
