Objectives: Preliminary testing of rechargeable N-halamine antimicrobial dental unit waterline tubing demonstrated its ability to prevent biofilm-formation. This study tested its functions over an eight-month period. Methods: A laboratory system, simulating predoctoral dental clinic activity, was used to test rechargeable N-halamine tubing (T) co...
Conference Paper
Objectives: A standard method to assess antimicrobial efficacy in dental unit waterlines (DUWL) using a microbial consortium and a chemical disinfectant has previously been presented by ADA/ANSI Working Group 9.48. The simple DUWL model described in this study is designed to replicate biofilm growth during clinical use, using tap water as source wa...

Objectives: To test the biofilm-controlling function of rechargeable N-halamine antimicrobial dental unit waterline tubing. Methods: Rechargeable tubing (T) was tested in a laboratory dental water delivery system that simulated a predoctoral dental teaching clinic. Dental unit manufacturer's tubing was used as control (C) and tap water as source...

... Testing was performed using a modified laboratory DUWL model delivery system, first described by the American Dental Association (ADA)/American National Standards Institute (ANSI) working group[19]. Details on the model setup in our laboratory have been described previously[20]. Five days a week for a six-month period, 1,500 mL water was collected from a nanofiltration/uv water purifier (Barnstead NANOpure Diamond Water Purification System) in a clean, nonsterile collection flask, transferred to a nonsterile polycarbonate reservoir, and pumped through two 5 ft-long sections of silicon tubing, and then to N-halamine test (T) and generic manufacturer's control (C) lines. T and C lines were comprised of 24×5 cm sections that were connected together with 2 cm sections of silicon tubing. ...
