Eshrat Reghbati

The widely used class of data processing programs which are characteristically dominated by the coordination of sequential file I/O is considered, in order to establish a canonical form for I/O program logic. Four primitive sequential file processing functions, called primitive functions (P-functions). are established. The goals of P-functions are to standardize and control logic for accessing sequential files and restricting the programmer to only these functions. It is shown how P-functions can be used to describe an application. Finally, the software engineering techniques are presented to integrate P-functions into efficient program modules that eliminate many intermediate files while maintaining the modularity of a P-function description of the application.
