Purpose The aims of this study were to estimate the type and frequency of different medical emergencies that occurred over the study period (twelve years) and discuss the lessons learned and the modifications made in the curriculum to better equip dental students and faculty in their management. Materials and methods A retrospective study was cond...

Background: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare benign non-odontogenic cyst that occurs most commonly in the posterior mandible. Occurrence in the mandibular condyle is rare. We present a case that was initially misdiagnosed as a parotid gland tumor and later was found to be an ABC. Case Presentation: A 19-year-old man presents with a painless fir...

Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of a standard antibiotic regimen protocol in the management of maxillofacial trauma patients. Materials and methods The study sample included patients with at least one facial fracture and managed by either closed (CR/MMF) or open reduction (ORIF) by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service. A standardized a...

There are several uncertainties as to how we will conduct these clinical, didactic, business and social activities as this COVID-19 global pandemic abates and social distancing guidelines are relaxed. We anticipate changes in the way we interact with our patients and other providers, the way we design patient workflow, the way we conduct our teachi...

Are there any risks associated with nitrous oxide? Is nitrous oxide a health hazard for dentists and their staff? Any such risk or hazard is related to the leakage of nitrous oxide from various sources in a dental office. Factors governing the concentration of nitrous oxide in ambient air of operatory have been enlisted along with a stepwise descri...
Chapter
It is said that “understanding is deeper than knowledge.” Likewise, there will be many of us who know nitrous oxide or are familiar with it, but few who understand it. This chapter will try to bridge the gap between our knowledge and understanding. After a brief look at the history and process of manufacturing and properties of the gas, we will int...
Chapter
This chapter gives an opportunity to the readers for a peek into the history of nitrous oxide and the story behind its discovery. Some important milestones in the development of nitrous oxide as an anesthetic agent of choice in medicine and then later in dentistry have been highlighted like the first demonstration of nitrous oxide at Harvard Medica...
Book
This clinical handbook is a complete guide to the use of nitrous oxide when performing dental procedures in children. Nitrous oxide offers the easiest and safest form of pharmacological behavior management in this age group and can help greatly in reducing fear and anxiety toward dentists and dental treatment. Importantly, its use in children diffe...

Long-standing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is an uncommon condition, and due to its rarity, no definitive guidelines have been developed for its management. Various reduction techniques ranging from indirect traction techniques to direct exposure of the TMJ have been used. Indirect traction techniques for reduction may fail in long-sta...

Standard curves. Standard curves used to validate the specificity of (A, C) glucose and (B, D) pentose detection reagents. Eight monosaccharides (glucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, arabinose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid) and three disaccharides (cellobiose, sucrose, trehalose) were tested. Glucose and xylose were included for ref...

Pentose release from pine lignocellulose by three recombinant enzymes that represent genes sampled from the R. flavipes host gut transcriptome. Glucose release (black bars) is shown for reference. See Materials and Methods and preceding figures for methodological details. Results show expected degrees of glucose release, but virtually no pentose re...

Recombinant laccase characterizations. pH dependence (A), and sodium azide enhancement and EDTA inhibition (B) for the recombinant Lac6/A laccase against the model substrate 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (DMP; Coy et al., 2010. Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 40: 723-732). Sawdust reaction buffer [0.1 M sodium acetate containing 0.01 M calcium chlo...

Glucose release from microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose by three recombinant enzymes that represent genes sampled from the R. flavipes host gut transcriptome. (A) Microcrystalline cellulose is highly insoluble and is a dominant natural form of lignocellulose; whereas (B) carboxymethyl cellulose is a chemically modified, highly s...

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the mandible is relatively rare, and is often treated by resection of the mandible. We describe embolisation followed by removal of the buccal cortical plate, which was later replaced. This way the original mandibular architecture was preserved while the morbidity associated with resection was prevented.
