Background: In 2019 ESPEN released a guideline on clinical nutrition and hydration in geriatrics. Several knowledge gaps were also identified. Among these were a question about whether there is an overlap of low-intake dehydration with malnutrition in older adults. The aim of this article is to take a closer look at this potential overlap between low-intake dehydration and malnutrition and whether it is of relevance to clinical practice. Methods: A non-systematic review of the literature. Results: The literature review identified an overlap between, respectively, malnutrition and low-intake dehydration, regarding the definitions, the risk factors and the consequences. However, although both conditions have serious consequences for older adults, very limited research has been performed on the aspect of low-intake dehydration compared to the aspect of malnutrition. Conclusion: Further research is needed to see if there is an overlap between the two conditions in clinical practice.

... The bare feet made positive contact with the base electrodes at the heels and forefeet, and the subjects grasped two handle electrodes for direct contact, with two more electrodes for each hand at the thumbs and forefingers [21]. Calf circumference was recorded as the measurement taken at the thickest part of both calves using a nonelastic tape, which has a moderate to high sensitivity and specificity for predicting low skeletal muscle mass [22,23]. ...

... Dehydration is a common condition that worsens with age in older persons, given the effects of climate change and the increased frequency of heat waves, there will likely be a rise in the number of deaths from dehydration (Abdullah et al., 2022). Although the exact frequency of dehydration in the older persons is unknown, it is frequently observed in community settings, with inadequate fluid intake serving as the main risk factor (Beck et al., 2023). It is thought to affect over one-third of older persons who live in vulnerable and frail communities (Paulis, et al., 2018). ...

... However, interestingly, we did not find the significant relationship between dehydration and malnutrition. This result, which is compatible with previous study results, suggests that dehydration and malnutrition should be evaluated separately in older patients [38,39]. Further studies are needed to explain whether there is a relationship between dehydration and malnutrition. ...

... The NIS was assessed using a checklist developed based on a literature review and clinical experience (Additional file 1). This NIS checklist was developed based on a literature review and benefited from previous related studies, Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA tool), multi-professional clinical expert opinions, and clinical experience where the NIS that might have a significant effect on reduced dietary intake was mentioned [26,27,[34][35][36]. ...

... In a 27-month follow-up study on 60 patients, the incidence of NOD in WON patients who underwent endoscopic drainage and necrosectomy was 20% [37]. Two studies on 65 and 17 patients, respectively, found that 27.7% and 24% of WON patients treated endoscopically developed NOD during one year of follow-up [36,38]. ...

... Estimated plate waste was predominantly collected using paper-based forms (n = 40, 68%), with six studies (10%) using an electronic form and the remaining studies providing inadequate detail to enable classification of the recording approach (n = 13, 22%) ( [111][112][113]118,121,124,127,128,131,134,138,141,143,147,152,153,157,160,[165][166][167][168]174) . Similarly, food records were mainly completed using paper-based forms (n = 30, 70%) with two (5%) studies reporting on the use of an electronic form and eleven (25%) studies providing insufficient data to enable classification (23,24,27,31,37,42,44,45,(48)(49)(50)53,(57)(58)(59)62,(65)(66)(67)(68)73,85,88,91,104,105,(107)(108)(109)(110)114,119,122,126,129,136,(144)(145)(146)155,162,171,174) . Within studies that used a 24 h recall to quantify dietary intake, recall was primarily collected using an interviewer-administered approach (n = 20, 87%), with one (4%) study using a self-administered computer-guided recall and the remaining two (9%) studies Dietary assessment methods in hospitalized patients providing inadequate detail to enable classification (21,26,33,34,40,52,69,74,90,92,102,115,120,130,139,142,148,149,151,164,169,172) . ...

... Whenever possible, measured indirect calorimetry should be prioritized, given the low accuracy of predictive equations and limited knowledge on actual energy use among patients with cirrhosis across the BMI spectrum. [45] When measured indirect calorimetry is not available, most nutrition guidelines in cirrhosis suggest BMI-adjusted energy intake based on body weight. [45] The use of actual body weight and ideal body weight (IBW) to calculate nutritional requirements is uncertain in liver disease, and established guidelines differ in their approach. ...

... Considering the host's immune response, the accelerated replication of the virus, due to the uncontrolled function of the immune system results in a damaging inflammatory response, which is identified by an elevation in inflammatory markers like tumor necrosis factor, C-reactive protein, interleukin, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate [6,7]. Most importantly, the virus is most infectious to individuals who have weakened immune systems, such as individuals over the age of 65, individuals with chronic health conditions, and individuals with significant changes in trace elements and vitamin levels [2,[8][9][10]. ...

... Consistent with prior research (37)(38)(39)(40), the patients in their intervention group lost significantly less body mass and experienced a significant increase in energy and protein intake. In addition, an improvement in physical function, as measured by the chair stand, was observed in the intervention group (41). ...
