Investigating traffic accidents: A Collision of two motor vehicles

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Traffic safety may be ensured by normal operation of all elements of the system, including the driver, a motor vehicle and transportation medium. Insufficient safety of some particular elements of this system (the lack of discipline of the participants of traffic, poor technical state of a motor vehicle or road, etc.) are the main causes of traffic accidents. Statistical data on traffic accidents in 2000–2009 in Lithuania is presented. Collisions of motor vehicles in 2009 make one of the largest proportion of all traffic accidents – 33.4%. In 2009 drivers, were the main traffic accident perpetrators – 73.6%. The paper considers some major aspects of motor vehicle collision simulation based on the application of PC-CRASH software, allowing researchers to analyze the changes in the direction of motor vehicle motion in the case of a collision and the influencing factors. This type of traffic accident simulation consists in studying the circumstances of collision, reconstructing the processes, calculating the pre-impact speed of motor vehicles and determining various parameters of motor vehicles’ movement at different stages of traffic accident development.

Prediction and prevention of road traffic accidents are two of the most important instruments for enhancing road safety. This paper investigates the application of the Naive Bayes method to the analysis of motor vehicle collisions. With an emphasis on comprehending the factors that contribute to such incidents, the paper employs a literature review to collect pertinent data. Using the Nave Bayes method, the study investigates the relationships between multiple variables, including weather conditions, road types, and motorist behavior, in order to predict the probability of collisions. The findings highlight the substantial impact of certain factors on the occurrence of collisions and shed light on preventative measures. This research contributes to improving road safety measures and reducing the frequency of motor vehicle accidents by employing Nave Bayes in collision analysis.
... The main goal in organizing traffic in an urbanized environment is to ensure safety and prevent accidents between participants. The speed of movement is limited in order to realize short dangerous zones of the transport vehicles, especially in relation to conflicts with pedestrians [1][2][3][4]. Outside the main roads of the cities, the movement of cars is carried out at a low speed. Due to various reasons and restrictions in the organization of traffic, as well as due to specific road conditions, this speed is in most cases, in practice, significantly lower than the speed limit for traffic in an urban environment. ...
... According to the findings of the current research, accidents resulting from brake failure affect the frequency of traffic accidents, which is similar with those of other studies 29 . Unauthorized speed, the age and gender of the drivers, and a driving history of less than two years may all contribute to this outcome 30 . ...

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are among the top causes of mortality and disability globally, particularly in developing nations like Iran. In this study, RTAs were analyzed to develop precise predictive models for predicting the frequency of accidents in the Kerman Province (southeastern Iran) using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and autoregressive integrated moving average with explanatory variables (ARIMAX) modeling methods. The findings demonstrate that including factors regarding humans, vehicles, and elements of nature in the time-series analysis of accident records resulted in the development of a more reliable prediction model than utilizing only aggregated accident count. The understanding of safety on the road is increased by this research, which also offers a method for forecasting that utilizes a variety of parameters relating to people, cars, and the environment. The findings of this research are likely to contribute to lowering the incidence of RTAs in Iran.

The number of road traffic accidents in the world has been increasing. This is mainly related to the constant increase in road traffic. The aim of this article is to examine the causes of road accidents in Poland in terms of road traffic safety. For this purpose, road incidents that occurred in Poland were analysed. In order to verify the presented statistical data on the state of safety in Poland, a survey was carried out to indicate the factors that most often cause traffic accidents. Possibilities for increasing the efficiency of traffic safety and an evaluation of the level of safety in vehicles were also part of the survey. The results showed that the state of RS, in the opinion of the respondents, is poor. The respondents correctly indicated the most frequent causes of road accidents, which confirms their knowledge in the field of road safety. The survey also showed that the activities of the police and programmes for increasing safety need improvement. According to the respondents, the actions that should be taken to improve safety are, first of all, the improvement of the technical condition of roads and the modernisation of road infrastructure. In addition, the survey showed that most men are car drivers, while women primarily travel on foot; the results also showed that the knowledge of RS is better among women.
... Safe road travel means following a number of established rules and regulations that should not be taken lightly [3]. The improvement of road safety is influenced by many elements related not only to the promotion of correct behavior among drivers [4][5][6], but to the proper organization of traffic, the appropriate technical condition of roads and vehicles, as well [7][8][9][10][11]. Training and examinations for future drivers are equally important. ...

Resume The number of vehicles on the road is growing every year and each year too many people lose their lives and health on Polish roads. The number of accidents, including at level crossings, is very high. Despite the construction of new, safer roads, the number of collisions continues to grow and about three thousand accident participants die each year. The main causes of accidents are inadequate speed to the prevailing road conditions or regulations, driving under the influence of alcohol and random events. For this reason, the article analyzes the safety at railroad crossings in Poland. In the next stage, an exemplary system improving safety at railroad crossings is presented. The new solution was analysed using a survey. The research results presented may be applicable to other countries.

Every year, many road accidents occur on Polish roads, in which many people lose their lives and health. Therefore, an attempt was made to analyze road accidents in the Piła poviat. The source of the analysis were the authors' observations and statistical data. This study was conducted on a sample of 250 inhabitants. Hence, a questionnaire was used. Most people, more than half, about 56%, travel by car because it is a more convenient and faster means of transport. While 35% of respondents stated that they feel relatively safe on the roads. A majority, 65%, of the respondents did not participate in a road accident. Further, 60% of the respondents replied that there were many accidents in the Piła poviat, and only 11% answered that there were not many accidents. According to the respondents, the biggest cause of the accidents is alcohol, inattention of drivers and haste. Despite the information, advertisements, scale of these accidents, and opinions of family and friends, people still drive under the influence of alcohol. Year by year, the number of accidents on the roads of the Piła poviat is low, but still considerably high. There is no best way to stop this from happening. In Piła itself, circular intersections have been introduced to improve safety, such an operation is one of the methods for smoother traffic. Additionally, in residential areas, there are more speed bumps to reduce the speed of vehicles. The conclusions obtained in this article can be successfully implemented, not only in other cities in Poland but also in Europe as well.

Every year a large number of vehicles travel on Poland's roads. The technical condition of vehicles largely depends on the technical condition of the road infrastructure. For this reason, the purpose of the article was to analyze the technical condition of the road infrastructure. The analysis was carried out with the help of a questionnaire survey on a random group of 380 people living and using roads in the Wielkopolska province. Based on the survey, it appears that drivers of the Wielkopolska province perceive changes in the state of road infrastructure in Poland. According to the respondents, these are changes for the better, and this is true regardless of whether they were asked about the road surface, signage, parking lots, toilets or the road network. They see the biggest positive changes over the past 10 years in pavement, while the smallest changes in infrastructure.

As the world witnessed, the motor vehicle, a mode of transport, is one of the most significant inventions for humans. At the same time, rapid urbanization, steady increase in the number of vehicles, speeding, and negligence on the road increase accident risk. According to the “Global Status Report on Road Safety” published by the World Health Organization (WHO), road/vehicle accident is the eighth leading cause of death for people, that is approximately 1.35 million every year in the world. Accident cases are rapidly increasing. This chapter explains the key elements of the systematic and scientific methods for road accident investigation. Determination of vehicle direction, the velocity at pre-crash, during a crash, post-crash, and change in the velocity are the primary queries for the investigating officer to the way of accident reconstruction. Despite significant usage of conventional scientific methods such as theory, empirical formula, and performing a crash test, there are few limitations for reconstructing the accident scene. The results based on conventional methods require knowledge and expertise; therefore, small errors may cause damage in all the perspectives for reconstruction. However, advancements in reconstruction techniques, i.e., accident database, computer simulation software, and event data recorder (EDR), provide great accuracy and significant results.

The aim of the research is to analyze the marking of pedestrians and cyclists in terms of their safety in road traffic. For this purpose, the method of diagnostic survey was selected and a survey was conducted among the inhabitants of Poland. There are 16 questions in the survey, in addition to basic questions about age and gender, there are also questions important for the purpose of the study. It contained questions about the functionality of the reflectors, and the recipient could also express his opinion on the obligation to wear reflectors in built-up areas and beyond. Thanks to the respondents being able to describe their feelings and the course of events in which they participated or witnessed them, the author was able to draw appropriate conclusions. Respondents were also asked about the use of floodlights in built-up areas and beyond. Most of them use the various reflective elements available. 52% of women declared the use of reflectors in undeveloped terrain, among men this indicator is shown by 48% of men. The inhabitants of Poland, as road traffic participants, feel jointly responsible for its safety. It should be remembered that from an early age children should be made aware of the importance of using their own lighting or the lighting of vehicles for minors, such as prams and bicycles.KeywordsSafetyGlarePedestriansCyclistsTrafficSignage

There are many ways of car collisions which depend on car motion modes before and after crashes, speed, kinds of baskets, their heights, weights and rigidity. The machinery of the occupant's movement at the moment of the crash is even more difficult. In order to find out precisely the chance of body injury, it is important to measure not only parameters that were mentioned above but also occupant's height, weight, age, position of sitting, condition of body, whether there was any protection system used. The largest number of car crashes happen at the moment of Frontal Crash. This article's aim is to analyse the types of Frontal Crashes and their repartition, to diagnose what part in occupant's safety the protection system's use takes, and also to analyse head injury coefficient dependence on car speed and show critical injuries and fatality limits in cases when driver is driving with no seat‐belts in and while the car is without airbag. The research is done at the moment of ideal Frontal Crash by simulating distance from the occupant body to the wheel in different types of baskets. First Published Online: 27 Oct 2010

During the road accident analysis speed of the examined vehicle often is being established in accordance with the length of the trace remained by the vehicle tires. Usually in such case there are values of braking deceleration used for calculations, which are selected from the corresponding references. The real experiment, establishing the braking parameters of the given vehicle, is performed more seldom. In both cases it is important to calculate the vehicle speed in accordance with the received or found values of deceleration as well to estimate the possible limits of the vehicle speed, i.e. to evaluate the veracity of such calculations. This paper presents the results of evaluation of car braking parameters, which are treated as random values in the known probabilistic characteristics. First Published Online: 27 Oct 2010

While investigating collisions with immovable obstacles it is necessary to assess the place of contact, its character and the speed of vehicles before the contact. These parameters depend on the obstacle. The most common cases were analyzed in the article: collision with an immovable obstacle which deformed only a part of the fore of vehicle (collision with a tree, a bollard, etc.); collision with an immovable obstacle which deformed the whole fore of vehicle (collision with a wall, etc.). The mathematical model of transport and pedestrian traffic restricting gate is designed. One section of the gate restricted the traffic of motor vehicles while the other limited the traffic of pedestrians. The gate was modelled based on the first‐order one‐dimensional finite elements taking into account only the resilience of the gate elements and the impact of soil on the ground‐embedded parts of the gate support and auxiliary posts. The potential deformations of gate elements were determined based on the mathematical model designed. The specific traffic event was investigated using the mathematical model of gate designed – four situations of motor vehicle–gate interaction were simulated and investigated. Modelling of straight road section consisting of one traffic line gives the opportunity to simulate “follow the car” system. In general it looks like a line of vehicles, going one after another. Kinetic theory, used in this paper describes traffic flow system as a straight unbroken line with limited flow speed and concentration. Such model also gives the opportunity to derive traffic lines intersections. For example, intersection could be derived like a point with traffic lines coming and outgoing from this point by only changing boundary conditions. Mathematical model is built using characteristic method. First Published Online: 27 Oct 2010

The largest damage to the road pavements is caused by the heavy goods vehicles (HGV's). Due to large axle loads, which often assume a dynamic effect, the HGV's account for almost the total destructive impact on the road pavement, though they make about 15% of the total traffic flows on the main roads of Lithuania. A continuous increase in the transit HGV's on the Lithuanian roads causes the permanent deformations of road pavements. Due to the insufficient pavement strength the ruts, waves, displacements and potholes are initiated. Based on the analysis of traffic volume it could be stated that the amount of vehicles on our roads has been annually growing. The largest loads are caused by HGV's, the average annual increase of which is 17%. Based on the traffic volume measurement data of the Transport and Road Research Institute (TRRI) the annual average daily traffic (AADT) and the impact of the HGV's on the road pavements was identified on separate sections of the roads E85 and E67. The impact was determined by calculating the equivalent standard axle (ESA).

The present paper describes the results of an investigation into the braking parameters of automobiles equipped with an antilock brake system (ABS) and without an ABS. The values of the automobile deceleration, the time of the deceleration increase and the time of disbraking, while braking on a dry asphalt-concrete surface, which has been fixed in the course of the experimental investigation, are presented. The dependence of the deceleration of the automobiles, equipped with an ABS and without an ABS, upon the primary driving speed is reflected and substantiated. The results of the investigation of the braking of the automobiles, equipped with an ABS and without an ABS, in winter conditions, i.e., on ice and snow, are presented. The cohesion characteristics and the automobile decelerations while braking on other road surfaces are presented.

A real world of a 12-year-old child pedestrian accident in Changsha was reconstructed by using MADY-MO and PC-CRASH programs to study pedestrian dynamic responses during the collision. First, PC-CRASH program was employed to find the dynamic parameters, which correlated well with the accident track according to the information from the on-spot accident investigation. These parameters were then applied to MADYMO models as boundary and initial conditions. A facet model (MBS-FACET) and a finite element (FE) model of the passenger car were developed based on the accident car. A mathematical model of the 12-year-old child was scaled down from an adult model with the SCALER module of MADYMO. The kinematics response and injury related parameters of the child were obtained from the accident reconstructions. The results have shown that the overall kinematics response and die head impact conditions of the child in each reconstruction are quite similar. The output of head injury parameters corresponds well to the injury out-comes from clinical diagnosis.
