Abstract

Production Technology in Selected Digital Cable Television Stations in Nigeria Akintunde Raheem Fountain University, Oshogbo And Adeyemo, Saheed O. Oladimeji. Ph.D Lagos State University, Ojo Digital television channels have provided additional opportunities for improved delivery with technology there is need for news programs to fill the multi-channel platforms for broadcast stations, to know their audiences and provide contents they need. In this study the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Television Continental (TVC) and China Global Television Network (CGTN) were selected. The theoretical framework explained the use of diffusion of innovation of innovation Theory, Technological determinism and development communication as they relate to programming patterns in news/current affairs and documentary production. In-depth interview was adopted for this research involving senior producers, senior news anchor and program presenters, production editors and production assistants with focus on contents varieties in elastic programming strategies on these digital platforms (such as beliefs, cultural tastes, aspirations and changing situations of the audience). The study found that all the stations programming contents cut across the demographics of the audience in the society and the news format adopted by the stations have similar patterns in programming contents. The production staff all agreed that the needs, wants and preferences of the audience were critical factors being considered especially in areas of content development in digital programming. Finally, the study revealed that digital broadcasting has adopted the use of dynamic and latest digital equipment as well as technology in terms of quality high-definition cameras that enhanced clearer picture and higher aspect ratio used in the production of news programmes.
