This book, which took a number of years to complete, tells the story of the computer manufacturer Philips Data Systems in general, and its division Philips Terminal Systems in particular. It is a book describing a forefront of the European computer industry in the 1970s-1980s. Philips Terminal Systems was one of the very few European computer manufacturers, perhaps the only one, that managed to occupy the number one position worldwide, with a margin, in a large computer market segment over a considerable amount of time. In this case, it was the segment of front-office banking systems from around 1975 to 1985. The book was designed using many pictures in order for it to be quick and pleasant to browse through while still getting its main points (more than 330 pictures in total). Wie Analysen und Potentialabschätzungen gezeigt haben, ist nach einer Segmentierung speziell bei Ersatzteilsortimenten von mehreren 100.000 Stück eine teileindividuelle tiefer gehende Differenzierung wünschenswert. [Show full abstract] jedes einzelne Segment nach den genannten Kenngrößen zu identifizieren. Das heißt, es ist im einfachen Fall möglich, ein Segment zu benennen (ABC-XYZAnalyse) und sämtliche Artikel, die in dieses Bewirtschaftungssegment fallen, mit den Größen ihres Stückbestandes, der Reichweite oder dem maximalen Abgang in Tabellenform darzustellen. In diesen Fällen, wo eine EDV-Integration – insbesondere zwischen einer Instandhaltungssoftware (IPSA: Instandhaltungs-, Planungs-, Steuerungs- und Analysesystem) und einem zentralen Materialdispositionssystem – aufgebaut wurde und ein entsprechendes Analysetool zur Verfügung steht, kann softwaregestützt ein ausgewähltes Segment mit den zugehörigen Kennzahlen dargestellt werden. Um für den Planer und Disponenten eine weitere Hilfe für eine logistische Bewirtschaftung zu bieten, können die Artikel in einem Segment zusätzlich nach den Zielgrößen Reichweite, Bestand oder Anzahl der Verbräuche sortiert werden. Erkennt der Disponent bei dieser Untersuchung und Überprüfung einzelner Artikel ein besonderes Ersatzteil (beispielsweise mit sehr hohem Bestand oder ungerechtfertigt hohen Bestellmengen) besteht die Möglichkeit, die Bevorratungshistorie entsprechend des vorher gewählten Vergangenheitszeitraumes aufzurufen, um im Detail die Bevorratungsursachen zu ermitteln.

Newton on the Equiangular Spiral: An Addendum to Erlichson′s Account

In a recent article Herman Erlichson called attention to a flaw in Newton′s proof of Proposition IX of Book I of the Principia. How did Newton fall into this error? A valid proof was near to hand, by an easy addition to Lemma III of Book II; but evidently Newton wished to attempt a different line of argument. The figure for Proposition IX in the first two editions of the Principia differs from ... [Show full abstract] that in the third edition, and does not involve the quadrilateral "given in kind" that Erlichson rightly objects to. But the basic error remains: the assumption without proof of the similarity of all segments of the spiral with the same central angle. By 1671 Newton had proved this assumption by an integration, establishing the logarithmic property of the equiangular spiral. In Proposition IX it would thus appear that he either simply presented as known an analytic result now familiar to himself, or hoped that his readers would consider it as valid for infinitesimal segments.

Student Preferences for Learning College Algebra in a Web Enhanced Environment

It is important to determine students' preferences if we hope to engage them better in the processes of learning, understanding, and doing mathematics. Responses collected from high school students enrolled in web enhanced college algebra courses from Fall 2004 through Spring 2008 are reported in this study. Feedback from 684 students responding to survey questions on end-of-course evaluations ... [Show full abstract] shows that homework from the book, computer laboratories, and online quizzes are chosen most often as helpful components in assisting with student understanding of mathematics. In particular, most students enrolled in the Spring 2008 semester chose homework from the book as the most helpful component, while over time, the online quizzes were chosen most frequently. While the focus of this study is on student preferences for learning algebra, responses made by the high school teacher facilitators in the project are included in order to compare their choices with those made by the students.
