Medicinal plants used in folkloric medicine of Fringel-e-Ghorband
Karimi, A. G.
Kabul University, Faculty of Pharmacy, 1006 Kabul, Afghanistan.
Abstract
Medicinal plants have been used for curing diseases throughout human
history. Even though humans have considerable achievements in the field of
pharmaceuticals and medicine, Indigenous phytotherapy is still practiced in many
rural areas. However, information on the use of medicinal plants from different
parts of Afghanistan such as the Frinjal-e-Ghorband area is lacking. Keeping this
in view the present study was initiated in late 2014.
The study aimed to look into the diversity of plant resources that are used by local
people for curing various ailments, to document the local knowledge regarding
medicinal plants, and to establish the herbaria of the above medicinal plants.
Questionnaire surveys, participatory observations, and field visits were planned
to elicit information on the uses of various plants.
It was found that 52 plant species belonging to 21 families are commonly used
by local people for curing various diseases. Also, it was found that information on
the medicinal uses of plants now seems to be confined to older people (above 50
years of age) only. The younger generation (less than 35 years old) is ignorant
about the vast medicinal resources available in their surroundings. It has been
found that Frinjal-e-Ghorband inherited a rich traditional knowledge and
documentation of this knowledge has provided novel information from the area.
