Quality Management and Environmental Management: Role of Knowledge Transfer and Organizational Innovation in Knowledge-Based Firms

Abstract and Figures

While knowledge-based firms pay much attention to quality management and environmental management, they pay little attention to transferring external knowledge into the organization, transferring internal knowledge to the outside of the organization, and transferring and localizing innovation within the organization. The role of knowledge transfer and organizational innovation in quality management and environmental management is the focus of this study. This research contributes to a better understanding of the function of organizational innovation and knowledge transfer as a strategic source and competitive advantage in today’s competitive and evolving era. The results of this research could be expanded upon and applied in all types of knowledge-based firms inside and outside of Iran. The literature review shows that all previous studies were conducted in developed countries and emerging economies. This study, however, was carried out in Iran, as a developing country, with a focus on concepts such as quality, environment, knowledge, and innovation. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between quality management and environmental management with a focus on the role of organizational knowledge and innovation transfer among managers of knowledge-based firms in science and technology parks and eight provinces were randomly selected as sample clusters in Islamic Republic of Iran Country. This research has been finalized in 2021. A conceptual model was designed in the light of theoretical literature and logical theory. Six hypotheses were formulated. The data were collected using a questionnaire and then analyzed through the Structural Equation Model. The results showed positive and significant relationships between quality management and environmental management; quality management and knowledge transfer; knowledge transfer and environmental management; quality management and organizational innovation; and organizational innovation and environmental management. The results further proved that there is a direct and significant relationship between knowledge transfer and organizational innovation. The current research showed that environmental management and quality management are relevant approaches to promote the productivity of knowledge-based firms, with a focus on the role of knowledge transfer and organizational innovation in achieving goals and missions.

Knowledge transfer has the potential to improve organization and staff performance as it facilitates the learning between knowledge holders and knowledge seekers. However, the success of this depends on several factors. Thus, this study has discussed the determinants of successful knowledge transfer that are specific for expatriate competencies and local in knowledge transfer. More importantly, these determinants were classified into four categories which include knowledge attributes, knowledge sender attributes, knowledge receiver attributes (absorptive capacity), and organizational attributes. In this regard, this study contributes to the current knowledge transfer literatures by highlighting the main determinants of the knowledge transfer, allowing for a deeper understanding of the determinants that prevent people from transferring their expertise. Moreover, it emphasizes the vital role of expatriates in knowledge transfer. Finally, this study provides a discussion on the limitations and offers promising areas for future studies.

For the last decades, Science and Technology Parks (STPs) have been emerging to help in the development of regions; as a consequence, there has been an improvement in RIS (Regional Innovation System) performance. This research aims to assess the contribution of STPs to the performance improvement of RIS in Portugal. A quantitative methodology is used, based on a framework, which is supported by four latent variables: (1) Policy Instrument (PI); (2) Regional Innovation Inputs (INNI); (3) Regional Innovation Outputs (INNO), and (4) Regional Idiosyncrasies (REG). The data was collected from Regional Innovation Scoreboard reports available for the seven Portuguese regions: North, Center, Lisbon, Alentejo, Algarve, and Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira between 2007 and 2018. The working sample is composed of 392 observations. Our findings show a clear innovation delimitation in Portugal. The North, Center, and Lisbon areas are the areas that have strong innovation. The rest of the country has moderate innovation, including the autonomous regions. Nonetheless, an improvement in innovation was registered between 2016 and 2019 in all regions except Alentejo and Algarve. This aligns with the Policy Instrument’s positive influence on the Regional Innovation inputs, which positively influences the Regional Innovation Outputs. The outcome allowed practical suggestions for regional stakeholders. This research is original for its methodological approach, never applied to the Portuguese context.

Internationalisation begins with companies’ decision to enter global markets to develop knowledge and experience as key competitive factors in the global economy, which has been the subject of much empirical research. Decision-making, knowledge management, and effective internationalisation have become key strategic tools for all companies, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study wants to provide a framework for SMEs internationalisation based on the real options theory, (ROT) as a knowledge driver method. For this purpose, the effective factors for internationalisation were identified by reviewing the literature on the subject and the internal and external backgrounds of the subject. Then, main and sub-factors were prioritised by the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The statistical population consisted of senior managers, business managers of SMEs in Isfahan, Iran, who were eligible to enter this study. Twenty-six experts participated in this study by judgmental non-random sampling method. A fuzzy AHP questionnaire was prepared in the form of 19 sub-factors and 7 main factors. The components of each factor in each group were also ranked by experts, and their weights were obtained. Next, according to the ROT strategies which have 5 options, an alignment matrix was used to align the factors affecting the decision with the strategies. After answering the research question, the option that had a higher mode was considered AS ; then, this score was multiplied by the weight obtained in the previous step and the TAS was obtained. Finally, strategies were classified as appropriate, need further investigation, and inappropriate.

This paper explores the influence of innovation approaches on innovation performance and firm performance among Indian biotechnology firms. Further, it aims to discuss the interceding role of innovation performance between innovation practices and firm performance. A criteria-based snowball sampling method was adopted for data collection. The collection of data was carried out using a web survey from 200 biotechnology firms located across India. The data is analysed using a covariance-based structural equation modelling (SEM) technique. The results indicate that the adoption of innovation practices positively influences the firms’ innovation and overall performance. Furthermore, the results confirm the mediating role of innovation performance between innovation approach adoption and firm performance. Firms, particularly from the biotechnology industry, can use these results to assess their performance and formulate or modify their strategy to improve their innovation and overall performance.

Knowledge management (KM) and human resource management (HRM) are closely related, since they both manage knowledge-based intangible assets that create and maintain a competitive advantage. In this research, we aim to show how KM contributes to human resource development (HRD) by systematically reviewing the empirical literature of the last 20 years (2000 to 2019). The results show that six KM processes contribute to seven dimensions of HRD to different degrees. KM contributes mostly to individual and professional HRD. The two most relevant KM processes in this relation are the creation and sharing of knowledge. The findings indicate an underuse of KM in technological, organizational, and social HRDs that should alert managers. The contribution of this study regards the identification of these seven dimensions of HRD and the effects that KM processes have on them. This contribution provides theoretical guidance on the relation between KM processes and HRD dimensions that leads to managerial implications for organizations.

The purpose of this study is to focus on the relationship between competitive advantage’s criterion of science and technology parks and incubators in order to identify factors with greater efficiency, focus on them, and develop them further in these centers. The key factors affecting the competitive advantage which prepared by our ex-study realized in the form of a DEMATEL questionnaire, and it was drawn up by experts. Questionnaires have been distributed via mail or presence in science and technology parks and experts’ office. The obtained results from the questionnaires on analysis of competitive advantage’s factors were evaluated by using Microsoft Excel, and the results of the review were modeled by yEd graph editor. Eventually, the obtained model was discussed and analyzed. In this research, the effectiveness and influence of each factor of competitive advantage in incubators and science and technology parks on the other factors are studied and the results are presented as chart and graph.

The social dimension of innovation is growing due to unprecedented wicked global challenges we all face, including COVID-19 pandemic. Those challenges in their dynamic complexity require new cross-scale, cross-domain and action-oriented approaches at the universities. I argue that universities need to go beyond their traditional missions and to take an active role in a transformative change by working with their communities and creating real social impact. The fourth mission concept is particularly relevant as it puts emphasis on the universities roles in sustainable development. I propose to reflect on those new roles of universities in the context of quadruple/quintuple helix model that is seen as playing an important role in fostering the shift from technical to social innovations. Social innovation is an element of a regional innovation system, in which the importance of knowledge is not determined exclusively by competitiveness and productivity, but by taking into account the creation of social well-being, the impact on the quality of life and co-creation of knowledge as part of public–private partnerships. By addressing social innovation practices from a perspective of Polish public universities, it fills the gap of relatively few studies on institutional change and incentive structures that influences the ability of universities to engage in social innovation by proposing. I propose to adapt the socially engaged university model that could be a tool for stimulating and strengthening their functions within a modern regional innovation system allowing for an active role of civil society organisations.

Quality management (QM) and innovation have aroused the interest of an extensive literature. The relationship between these two strands of research remains thoroughly misunderstood, though. With the aim of offering a refined understanding and validation of the relationship proposed, the current paper investigates the effect of seven QM practices on product, process, and organizational innovation, respectively. For the purpose of further addressing the links above, the moderating role of ISO 9001 certification is considered. The model proposed is tested, using the hypothetico-deductive research method. On the basis of data gathered from 81 firms in Tunisian manufacturing sectors, Mann–Whitney test is used to compare QM practices and innovation in ISO and non-ISO-certified companies. The causal relationships are then analyzed, using structural equation modeling. The findings suggest that most of corporations surveyed have implemented QM practices and innovation to a large extent. Nevertheless, this implementation is higher in certified firms. On the other hand, evidence is found to support that partnership with customers and suppliers have a positive influence on product and process innovation while leadership, decision-making, and process approach are significantly related to organizational innovation. Unexpectedly, employee involvement has no significant impact on the three innovation types. Empirical findings do not support the moderating effect of ISO 9001 certification, either. Based on a multi-dimensional structure of constructs, the originality of this paper consists in analyzing the effect of seven QM practices on three distinct types of innovation in ISO and non-ISO-firms. The findings from the structural model contribute to the emerging-scholarly discourse via rejecting the assumption that QM practices undermine innovation, mainly in developing countries where insights on the topic are scarce. As a matter of fact, managers should recognize that quality could, through its human and technical aspects, promote creating an environment conducive to innovation provided that those practices are effectively applied.

This article appreciates the role of Institutional quality in addressing inequalities in Africa. Starting from Piketty’s (2015) holistic analysis of income inequalities and their sources, we have integrated two contemporary forms of inequalities (environmental and housing). We carry out an estimation of a panel data model using the Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM) on a sample of 48 African countries for the period 1996–2016, which yielded two main results. Firstly, governance indices reduce income inequality and have a significant adverse effect on housing and environmental inequalities. Secondly, Longevity of the regime and the Term in power of the political party of the chief executive exacerbate the inequalities in all its forms.

This paper aims to elaborate a diagnosis and performance matrix concerted on the increment of human capital value by sharing tacit knowledge in non-profit organizations. The following objectives were defined: determine which indicators of tacit knowledge sharing are appliable; determine the measures to be implemented, aiming the augmentation of tacit knowledge sharing and learning organizational. Interviews were conducted with the commanders of volunteer fire brigades in Portugal. It was possible to create a diagnosis and performance matrix to increase the tacit knowledge sharing in these organizations. The application of this matrix improves the tacit knowledge sharing and consequently increases the human capital value. The option of a multiple case research of organizations such as voluntary fire brigades is unique in its action and identity, enabling such organizations with competencies to improve their performance with the purpose of mitigating tragic circumstances that may lead to the loss of human lives.
