As per the 2011 Census, there are 33 tribes in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Among the 33 tribes, 6 tribes namely: Chenchu, Gadaba, Kondh, Konda Reddy, Savara, and Porja are falling under the category of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). The Chenchu tribe is considered to be the most vulnerable tribal group because of their pre-agricultural state of the economy, and low level of literacy in Andhra Pradesh. The study shows the changing trend of demographic characteristics by using the Census of India data from 1991 to 2011, by using the percentage distribution.

A Preliminary Acoustic Study of Tones in Dapzal Dialect of Paite

Paite is an understudied Kuki-Chin language of the Tibeto-Burman family, spoken mainly in the Churachandpur district of Manipur in the Northeast of India. It is also spoken in some parts of the neighbouring states like Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland (Yumnam, 2010). Like most Tibeto-Burman languages, Paite is a tone language with different descriptions in the existing literature. Singh (2006) has stated that the Lamzang dialect has five contrastive tones, while Yumnam (2010) reported that the same dialect has two lexical tones. On the other hand, there is no tone description of the Dapzal dialect so far. Hence, the present study deals with the preliminary descriptions of tones in the Dapzal dialect spoken in Lamka town in the Churachandpur district of Manipur. The present study provides an acoustic study of tones in the Dapzal dialect of Paite by measuring the values of the fundamental frequency and the slope of the pitch by using recorded speech data obtained from 10 native speakers (7 male and 3 female). The recorded words are tonal minimal pairs of 10 distinct words (for example, /bel/: ‘pot’ – Level tone, ‘early’ – Rising tone and ‘to stay with’ – Falling tone) and each word is repeated thrice by each speaker. The F0 contour plot has shown that there are three contrastive tones in the Dapzal dialect of Paite, which are proposed as Level, Rising and Falling tones. The F0 contours of all three tones have their onsets very close to each other, while Rising tone has the most deviated offset. The Rising tone starts to rise from 36% of the total duration at 155Hz and ends at about 173Hz. Level tone and Falling tone have similar F0 contours where there is a falling contour, which indicates that the slope of the F0 has helped the speakers distinguish the two different tones. This suggested that, like in Mizo, another Kuki-Chin language where the F0 slope enhances in identifying tones (Sarmah & Wiltshire, 2010; Govind et al., 2012), the averaged F0 alone in the Dapzal dialect of Paite is not sufficient to identify the tones of Level and Falling. Hence, the F0 slope plays an important role.

The study revealed an increase in the absolute number of total migrants on the one hand and a decline in the rate of migration on the other. In the state, migrants moving within a district have recorded the highest annual migration rate from 2001 to 2011, indicating that migration is becoming a short-distance phenomenon. Further, the migration rate was seen to be higher among the migrants from one urban area to another, both among intrastate and interstate migrants. Economic and demographic factors such as per capita income and urbanization have been found to be strongly related to interstate in-migration.

Pattern of Urbanization and the Contribution of Migration to Urban Growth in Haryana, India

[Show full abstract] states of India and has experienced a significant transformation in its economy; census data shows an emerging pattern of urbanization in the state. The level of urbanization is analyzed by the percentage of urban population and urban growth has been calculated by an exponential rate of growth. The analysis reveals that Faridabad, Panchkula, Panipat, and Gurgaon are the most urbanized districts and natural increase is the foremost component of urban growth in the state. The contribution of migrants in urban growth is mainly by those who moved for work/employment and with household. The study suggests that policymakers should focus on emerging urbanized districts and classes of urban centers to provide basic civic amenities to its residents.
