Imidocarb Use In Animals

Imidocarb dipropionate is a carbanilide derivative antiprotozoan drug. The drug is approved for use in animals for the treatment of tick-borne transmitted babesiosis (piroplasmosis) and anaplasmosis. However, its effectiveness against some other microorganisms transmitted by ticks has also been investigated. Although cattle, horses, donkeys, mules, dogs and sheep are defined as target species, they can also be used in other domestic and wild animals. Although it is recommended to use the drug as a single dose, it can be applied 2-3 days later if necessary. The therapeutic index of the drug is narrow, and attention should be paid to the dosage regimen. In this review, it could be tried to give information about the use of imidocarb in animal species, its success in treatment and its side effects.

The pharmacokinetic behaviour and bioavailability of enrofloxacin (ENR) were determined after single intravenous (iv) and intramuscular (im) administrations of 5mg/kg bw to six healthy adult Angora rabbits. Plasma ENR concentrations were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic data were best described by a two-compartment open model. ENR pharmacokinetic parameters ... [Show full abstract] were similar (p>0.05) for iv and im administrations in terms of AUC0-infinity, t1/2beta and MRT. ENR was rapidly (t1/2a, 0.05 h) and almost completely (F, 87%) absorbed after im injection. In conclusion, the pharmacokinetic properties of ENR following iv and im administration in Angora rabbits are similar to other rabbit breeds, and once or twice daily iv and im administrations of ENR at the dose of 5mg/kg bw, depending upon the causative pathogen and/or severity of disorders, may be useful in treatment of infectious diseases caused by sensitive pathogens in Angora rabbits.

Phenobarbital Effects on Brain and Liver Tissues Enzyme Activity in Balb/C Mice

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of phenobarbital on some brain and liver tissue enzyme activities in Balb/C mice. Forty male Balb/C mice were used. Ten mice served as a control group, and thirty mice were administered with phenobarbital (80 mg·kg-1 body mass, single oral dose). [Show full abstract] liver tissues alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase and amylase activities were measured by autoanalyzer. Phenobarbital did not affect gamma glutamyl transferase and amylase activities in the brain and liver, and alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities in the liver. However, statistically significant (p < 0.05) increases of alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were observed in the brain. In general, after phenobarbital administration, serum alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities increase and these increases are believed to be derived from the liver. These result suggest that brain may contribute to increased activities of these enzymes in serum in Balb/C mice.

The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics and possible interactions of enrofloxacin (ENR) and flunixin meglumine (FM) in healthy rabbits and in rabbits where endotoxaemia had been induced by administering Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). [Show full abstract] simultaneously as a bolus intravenous (IV) injection to each healthy rabbit. After a washout period, Phase II consisted of purified LPS administered as an IV bolus injection, then FM and ENR. LPS produced statistically significant increases in some serum biochemical concentrations. After the drugs were co-administered, the kinetic parameters of FM were not significantly different in healthy compared to endotoxaemic rabbits. It is concluded that ENR and FM could be co-administered to rabbits to treat endotoxaemia as no negative interaction was observed between the pharmacokinetics of both drugs.

Pharmacokinetics and oral bioavailability of enrofloxacin in faunated and defaunated Angora goats

The pharmacokinetic properties and bioavailability of enrofloxacin were compared after single oral administration of 5 mg/kg bw to faunated and defaunated adult Angora goats. Plasma enrofloxacin concentrations were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic data were best described by a 2-compartment open model and were similar in both groups. [Show full abstract] concentrations, of enrofloxacin in defaunated group were higher than those of faunated group except for 8, 12 and 24 hours, and Cmax in defaunated goats was also higher than other group (p < 0.05). Although the oral bioavailability of the drug in defaunated group (F, 30 %) was higher than that in the faunated group (F, 23 %), this difference was not significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, oral absorption of enrofloxacin in adult angora goats was slightly affected by defaunation. Despite of low oral bioavailability, once daily oral administration of enrofloxacin at the dose of 5 mg/kg bw may be suitable in treatment of infectious diseases caused by sensitive pathogens in Angora goats.
