Authors:

Abstract

List of fungi reported from Golestan National Park located in the easternmost parts of the Iranian Caspian forests is provided in table format. The park is characterized for being a transition zone among the juniper woodlands, the montane, the Hyrcanian forests, and the Artemisia steppes and covers an area of 2750 hectares. In table one list of 79 rust taxa (Uredinales) is provided. These taxt belong to 6 genera and one form-genus. The table also contains host species, locality and related reference(s). Second table (table 2) provide information about other groups of fungi, excluding rusts. This table contains information of 254 fungal taxa mainly belong to Homobasidiomycetes (Basidiomycota), there are also other records about fungi belong to miscellaneous groups of Ascomycota including Erysiphales, Pyrenomycetes, Discomycetes and Loculoascomycetes. The table also contain records of smut fungi and anamorphic ascomycetes. For each taxon, fungal group (Phylum/Class or Order), fungal species, host/substratum and related references is provided. The knowledge of Uredinology in Iran is 160 years old. Since the beginning of study on rust fungi (Pucciniales) in Iran 659 rust taxa (including species and infra specific taxa) have been reported or described from Iran. From this number I have considered 426 species as accepted or GOOD species. These species belong to 21 telemorphic and two anamorphic rust genera reporting on 1133 host taxa from 60 plant families. In the current book, identification keys for all 470 rust taxa on 60 host plant families in Iran are provided. The keys have been arranged under host families, genera and tribes which are arranged alphabetically.

This volume is the first in a book series titled “Biodiversity of rust fungi in Iran”. The book starts with History of Uredinology in Iran. Taxonomy of Pucciniales, morphological features of rust fungi, taxonomic criteria in rust fungi identification at various levels, life cycles including terminology of life cycle in rust fungi and methodology for rust fungi identification are discussed in following chapters. The next part of the book contains identification keys including identification keys for the families and genera of rust fungi (including anamorphic forms) in Iran. All 10 families and 21 genera of rust fungi reported from Iran are comprehensively described. All genera are also documented by original photomicrographs. In the final chapter of the book, the ecology of rust fungi in Iran is discussed.

ABBASI, M. and Mohseni-Chamazkoti, S. 2013 (2014). The mycobiota of Kiasar National Park (Mazandaran province, N Iran). Rostaniha 14(2): 175-183. In the framework of the project "collection and Identification of fungi in Iran" mycobiota of Kiasar National Park located in Mazandaran province (Northern Iran) was studied. During the first phase of this research, micromycetes of trees and shrubs from Kiasar National Park were collected and identified. In the current paper, 25 species of micromycetes of this region are reported. Among identified taxa, Erysiphe lonicerae var. ehrenbergii on Lonicera floribunda, Melasmia berberidis on Berberis sp., Cystodendron dryophilum on Quercus sp. and Monodictys fluctuata on Pyrus boissieriana, are newly reported from Iran. Moreover, Didymosporina aceris on Acer sp. and Septoria berberidis on Breberis sp. are reported in Iran for the second time and after several decades from first report. Concerning Septoria berberidis, its Asteromella state was also seen on infected leaves besides the Septoria state.

Arasbaran is one of the most important protected regions in Iran located in NW of the country and east of E Azarbaijan Province. Several reports have been published on the mycobiota of this region however there is only few records about rust fungi of Arasbaran. Our research on rust fungi of Arasbaran region get started since 2006. During this study, several rust taxa collected and identified from this area. Among identified taxa, Puccinia jaceae on Centaurea macrocephala, P. chaerophylli var. retifera on Chaerophyllum aureum, Uromyces prosopidis on Prosopis farcta var. farcta and Uromyces heliotropii on Heliotropium europaeum are newly reported from Iran. Several new hosts for identified rust taxa are also reported.

- ABBASI, M., Hedjaroude, Gh. A., Ershad, D. and Termeh, F. 2002. On the taxonomy of Puccinia graminis Pers. and some remarks on the ecology of the rust in Iran. Iran. J. Plant Path. 38: 9-42. Puccinia graminis is a macrocyclic heteroecious species with aecial hosts in the Berberidaceae and telial hosts in the Poaceae. As a plant pathogen stem rust, P. graminis is known in Iran from 1939. In all scientific papers in Iran stem rust is usually presented in a broad taxonomic sense (P. graminis s.l.). The main attention in this study was paid to the taxonomy and ecology of P. graminis in Iran. The study was based on dried specimens mostly collected from different parts of Iran during 1991-1999 and specimens preserved in the following herbaria: Herbarium Ministerii Iranici Agriculturae (IRAN), Agricultural college of Tehran University (KAR) and Arthur Herbarium, Purdue University (PUR). Spores from dried specimens were mounted mostly in lactophenol and examined with an Olympus BH2 microscope equipped with Nomarski Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) at a magnification of x 400 or x 1000. Specimens were photographed using a PM-10 AD photomicrographic system. Seventy spores per specimen were randomly selected and measured. Specimens were deposited in the Herbarium Ministerii Iranici Agriculturae (IRAN) in Tehran and duplicates were sent to the Arthur Herbarium, Purdue University (PUR). For Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) urediniospores were mounted on a specimen stub and coated with gold (3-3.5 minutes at 29 mA). The specimens were observed and photographed using a Leitz AMR/1000 Scanning Electron Microscope. Cluster analysis was done with NTSYS software using SAHN clustering. The clustering method used was UPGMA (unweighted, pair-group method with arithmetic average). Morphological features of 44 specimens of P. graminis were evaluated. As a result three infra-specific taxa were recognized for stem rust of wheat and grasses in Iran. The resulting phenogram confirmed these infra-specific taxa. These taxa are as follows:-P. graminis subsp. graminis var. graminis, on Triticum aestivum and other closely related genera belong to Triticeae. Urediniospores (25)27-43(50) × (12)14-21(24) μm, urediniospore echinulae are finest on pore belt and coarsest near ends, germ pores 4-5(6) rarely 7, equatorial.-P. graminis subsp. graminis var. stakmanii, on grasses belong to Triticeae, Bromeae, Poeae and Avenae. Urediniospores (20)24-35(39) × (13)15-20(22) μm, the echinulae are about half the diameter on the spore equator that they are at the ends, germ pores (3)4-5 equatorial.-P. graminis subsp. graminicola, on Poa spp. Urediniospores 19-29(31) × 13-16 μm, germ pores 2-4 equatorial. All above rust taxa are new to the Iranian rust flora. The results of this study confirmed the validity and value of Urban's infra-specific taxonomy for P. graminis. In this study moreover, life cycle of P. graminis was clarified from field observation. The geographic distribution and host range of this species were also determined. Aegilops tauschii, Avena ludoviciana, Boissiera squarrosa, Bromus sterilis, B. tomentosus, Elymus elongatiformis, E. libanoticus, Eremopyrum distans, Hordeum bulbosum, H. glaucum, Leucopoa sclerophylla, Poa pratensis, P. trivialis and Taeniatherum crinitum are reported as new hosts for P. graminis in Iran.

ABBASI, M., Hedjaroude, Gh. A. and Ershad, D. 2002. Puccinia spp. on Arundineae in Iran: delimitation and distribution. Rostaniha 3: 63-86. The taxonomy, morphology and distribution of rust species on Arundineae (Poaceae) in Iran was studied. Five species of Puccinia viz, P. magnusiana Körn., P. phragmitis (Schumach.)Körn., P. isiacae G. Winter, P. trabutii Roum. & Sacc. and P. akiyoshidanensis Morim. are described and illustrated. Of these, Puccinia akiyoshidanensis is considered as a distinct species and newly recorded for Iranian rust flora. Moreover, on the basis of examination of type and authentic materials, P. isiacae, P. trabutii, P. moriokaensis S. Ito and P. okatamensis S. Ito are considered as distinct species. A distribution map and key to the identified Puccinia species on Arundineae in Iran is given. -Puccinia magnusiana Körn. Hedwigia 15: 179. 1876. Material examined: On Phragmites australis (Cav.) Padwick (PUR F14950), III. The aecial stage of this species has been reported on Cheirantus cheiri and Lepidium latifulium L. from Karaj (Viennot-Bourgin et al. 1970). Uredinial and telial stages of the rust have been recorded on Phragmite australis from the same place (Petrak 1949, Esfandiari 1951) and from Perspolis in Fars province (Magnus 1899). Tranzschel (1906), Viennot-Bourgin (1958) and Gäumann (1959) regarded P. trabutii as a synonym of P. isiacae. However, some apparent distinctions between these two fungi are noted in this study: Two types of teliospores are observed in telia of P. trabutii, small spores in the surface of telia, wall chestnut-brown and giant teliospores (up to 80 µm length) in the base of telia wall golden brown up to 6.5 µm thick at side and 16 µm at apex. Based on these morphological distinctions, two above rust species viz. P. trabutii and P. isiacae considered as separate species. -Puccinia akiyoshidanensis Morim. Japan. J. Bot. 34: 187. 1959. Material examined: On Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. Iran, Mazandaran, Haraz road, Baladeh road, alt. 900m, 15 Oct. 1996, M. Abbasi, Z. Ghanbari (IRAN 10997F), II+III. On Phragmites longivalvis Steud., Hiroshima, Kawi-irie, Yoshidacho, Japan, 5 Dec. 1957, Y. Morimoto (PURF16047), III (Isotype). Previously P. akiyoshidanensis is reported only from Japan. This species is newly reported for Iranian rust flora. Cummins (1971) considered P. akiyoshidanensis as a synonym of P. moriokaensis, moreover he regarded P. okatamensis as a variety of the latter species. Examination of the type and other authentic materiales of above rust species revealed significant morphological differences among them and therefore, P. akiyoshidanensis, P. moriokaensis and P. okatamensis considered as distinct species.

In the present study, infra specific taxonomy of Puccinia coronata in Iran was studied. Based on morphological characters only, four P. coronata varieties were recognized in Iran. These are: P. coronata var. coronata, P. c. var. avenae, P. c. var. hordei and P. c. var. golestanica var. nov. Descriptions of the four varieties and their host range are provided. Several new hosts for aecial and telial states of P. coronata are also reported here. Moreover, the measurements of aeciospores on several specimens of aecial state of P. coronata (Aecidium rhamni) from Iran and other countries (Table 1) revealed that aeciospores range of A. rhamni is larger than literature records (Table 3).
