[Show full abstract] visualize just how radically different the morphosyntax, morphophonology, and semantics of Spoken French are from French-on-the-page, the editor has developed a glossing framework, designed to capture the systemic, radically-prefixal morphology of Spoken French and the variability of change-in-progress. The model, presented here and used to gloss the examples from the Tours corpus, is also suitable for corpus-tagging. The volume is organized into sections preceded by an Editor’s note and followed by suggestions for further reading, and closes with an appendix of French corpora. This scholarly edition was written for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in the field.

Alcuin and Cynewulf: the art and craft of Anglo-Saxon verse

The essentially bilingual nature of Anglo-Saxon poetry is explored through the verse of two of the most prolific poets from the period, namely Alcuin and Cynewulf, composing primarily in Latin and Old English, respectively, but each reflecting knowledge and appreciation of verse in both languages. Both Alcuin and Cynewulf are shown to have consciously copied the works of their predecessors, and ... [Show full abstract] both in turn had their own verse evidently echoed by contemporary and later poets in both Anglo-Latin and Old English, so much so that they seem to have been the centres of closely identifiable �schools� of verse, active at around the same period, within a decade or two either side of the year 800, and sharing a similar background, attitude, and training. An Appendix considers the authorship and identity of Cynewulf, and suggests that, like Alcuin, he too may be best situated at the interface of orality and literacy in contemporary Northumbria.

The Effects of Instruction Using a Mnemonic Graphic Organizer on Vocabulary Acquisition among Adult...

A study investigated the efficacy of the mnemonic graphic organizer strategy on the vocabulary acquisition of beginning and advanced adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students. Subjects, 48 adults enrolled in two adult ESL classes at a metropolitan adult school, were randomly divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental treatment was conducted in three 45-minute sessions ... [Show full abstract] over a period of 1 week. Subjects in the control and experimental groups received the same instruction in the topic material, but subjects in the experimental group used a mnemonic graphic organizer strategy for vocabulary acquisition. Results indicated that the use of graphic organizers across high and low ability groups was as effective in subjects' vocabulary acquisition as the regular classroom technique, and was significantly effective with beginning ESL students over and above the regular classroom instruction. Findings suggest further support for the utilization of the cloze technique for ESL proficiency testing. (Six tables of data are included; 6 appendixes containing a description of the steps in constructing and using graphic organizers, the student consent form, pre- and post-test vocabulary lists for both classes, instructional material on how to use reference material, the graphic organizer used in the study, data from the study, and 92 references are attached.)
