First international presentation of a stereotactic neurosurgery planning system developed to run under Microsoft DOS for the IBM PC and compatible computers. The name of the system was NSPS and at that time supported images from CT, MRI, X-rays, and DSA. NSPS had tools for biopsies, stereotactic brachytherapy, functional neurosurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and other surgical modalities. NSPS, at that time, was used in Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras and Centro Internacional de Restauración Neurológica, in Havana, Cuba. Eventualy, NSPS became the seed of MSPS and the MNPS.

Stereotaxis is the safest way for neurosurgeons to lead their instruments into deep-seated brain targets. Stereotactic neurosurgery was pioneer in using medical imaging as guidance. 2D Monte Carlo Code for Fast X-Ray beam modeling on personal computers

Monte Carlo (MC) techniques have become an important source of data for external radiation therapy modeling. The present MC program has been used in X-ray beam spectrum evaluation, point spread functions generation for convolution methods, peek scatter factors determination and small beam simulation for radiosurgery, in the energy range from 1.25 to 30 MeV. The irradiated medium is assumed ... [Show full abstract] homogeneous and water equivalent. The photon interactions included are photoelectric, coherent scattering, Compton and pair production. The continuous slowing down approximation is used for electron and positron transport simulation; positrons and electrons are subjected to similar effects, except the positron annihilation. The execution time heavily depends on energy, field and phantom size, but useful results (error < 3 %) are available in a very short time if compare with other MC codes running equivalent experiments. The convergence of the process can also be followed with a periodic graphic output of the isodose distribution, which may be considered a very reliable indication of the solution statistics and stability. The code has been optimized for the 32 bits IBM PC architecture and some critical procedures were handwritten in 80386 assembler; most of the source program was written in the C programming language. The program runs under MS-DOS with Pharlap 386 DOS extender or Rational DOS4G extender; it needs more than 2 Mbytes of RAM and a VGA graphic adapter.
