SpatioTemporalEstimationofSurfaceDeformationasaFactorofRelativeSeaLevelChangeinCoastalUrban
EnvironmentsandProtectedAreasWiththeContributionofSENTINEL1Images
TheriseofwaterscanbecausedbothbytheriseofsealevelandbythesubsidenceofEarthsurface.Thecombinationofthesetwofactorsisthe"RelativeSeaLevel
rise".
Theriseinsealevelisexpectedtoconsiderablyaggravatetheimpactofcoastalhazardscausedinthecomingyears.Potentialimpactsareexpectedtobesignificant,for
exampletheincreaseinthefrequencyoffloods,theaccelerationofcoastalerosion,aswellastheimminentslumpofcoastalareasfromsaltywaters.Theimpact
dependsnotonlyontheintensityandextentofcoastalchanges,butalsoonhumanresponseandadaptabilitytohazardsincludingthetypeofexposure.
Coastalareaswithverylowaltitudesareparticularlyvulnerabletotherelativesealevelchange.Inparticular,forcoastalurbancenterstheriskisincreasedduetohigh
exposure.Coastalprotectedareasarealsoofgreatinterestduetothehighconservationandprotectionofthespecialcharacteristicsofthenaturalenvironment.Land
settlementonalocalscalecanmakeasignificantcontributiontotherelativesealevelrise,soitisnecessarytounderstandtherhythmandspatialdistributionofpotential
surfacedeformationincoastalareas.
ThecurrentprojectaimsattheimplementationofinterferometrictechniquessuchasPSIandSBASbasedonSLCSARimagesfromSentinel1A&Bsatellites.The
interferometricresultswillbecombinedinaGISenvironmentwiththeratesofsealevelchangesderivedfromAltimetry,morphology(usingahighresolutiondigital
embossedmodel),andlandusetypesforstudyarea.
Thescopeoftheprojectistocreateascenariooffuturerelativesealevelrisethroughcartographicimagingwiththeaimofspatiallytimeassessmentofvulnerabilityof
coastalareas.
ThepilotcoastalareaofThermaikosGulfatnorthernGreeceispresentedwhichischaracterizedbythepresenceofthecityofThessaloniki(establishedasthesecond
mostimportanturbancentreofGreece),anextendedindustrialzone,locallytourisminfrastructure,aninternationalportthatconstitutesthecentreofmerchantshipping
fortheBalkancountries,theAxiosriverdeltaandthesmallerGallikosriverdelta.Theirdeltaicplains,withabirdfootshape,indicatethedominanceoffluvialover
marineprocessinformingthemostactivepartoftheThermaikosshoreline.
Theproject,towhichacademicadvisorisProf.IssaakParcharidis,isinprogresswithadurationof15monthsiscofinancedbyGreeceandtheEuropeanUnioninthe
frameworkoftheOperationalProgramme:HumanResourcesDevelopment,EducationandLifelongLearning.Thecontributionofthisresearchtoscientificknowledge
isprimarilythedeterminationoflanddeformationusingSARInterferometry(from1992tilltoday),whichcombinedwithexistingaltimetrydata,willallowtherelative
sealeveltobecalculatedinthreepilotcases:theofcityofAlexandroupolisandtheEvrosDelta,thecoastalzoneofThermaikosGulfandthecoastalareaofKillini
Araxoswhichbringtogetherthecharacteristicsofinterest.
