HOW TO APPLY CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION (CPR)
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR can save lives.
Any healthy adult or child can learn this simple technique
which involves mouth-to-mouth breathing combined with
manual external heart massage.
Follow these three easy steps (illustrated in the diagrams).

HARTWEEK 1 - 8 SEPT. 1982
ONE
Assess the condition of the patient. If he has no pulse,
gasps for breath or does not breathe at all, is unconscious
and does not immediately respond to being shaken, has
dilated pupils and a grey or bluish skin, prepare to apply
CPR immediately. Do not delay. The heart and brain must
receive sufficient oxygen as soon as possible. Roll the patient
onto his back, kneel beside him, place one hand under his
neck and the other hand on his forehead. Tilt his head back
gently to open the airway. Remove any foreign material or
false teeth from his mouth.
TWO
Pinch the patient’s nose to keep it closed. Take a deep
breath, seal your mouth over the patients mouth and blow
four full breaths into his lungs. Repeat.
THREE
Kneel opposite the patient’s chest. Place the heel of your
right hand over the lower half of the patients breast bone.
Place your left hand over the back of your right hand and
clasp your fingers so that they do not touch the patient’s
chest wall. Keep your arms straight. With the heel of your
hand, depress the patient’s breast bone four or five
centimetres for fifteen counts, counting one and two and
three and . . .
Move back to the patient’s head and repeat the two lung
inflations. Continue inflating the lungs and depressing the
heart rhythmically until the patient regains consciousness or
begins breathing normally.
EEN
Stel die toestand van die pasient vas. Asdaargeen polsslag
