COVID‐19 Pandemic: Power Law Spread and Flattening of the Curve

In this paper, we analyze the real-time infection data of COVID-19 epidemic for nine nations. Our analysis is up to May 04, 2020. South Korea, China, Italy, France, Spain, and Germany have either flattened or close to flattening their epidemic curves. USA and Japan have transitioned to a linear regime, while India is still in a power-law phase. We argue that the transition from an exponential ... [Show full abstract] regime to a succession of power-law regimes is a good indicator for flattening of the epidemic curve. We also argue that lockdowns, long-term community transmission, and the transmission by asymptomatic carriers traveling long distances may be inducing the power-law growth of the epidemic.

Estimating the infection horizon of COVID-19 in eight countries with a data-driven approach

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all countries of the world producing a substantial number of fatalities accompanied by a major disruption in their social, financial and educational organization [1]. The strict disciplinary measures implemented by China were very effective and thus were subsequently adopted by most world countries to various degrees. The infection duration and number of ... [Show full abstract] infected persons are of critical importance for the battle against the pandemic [2,3]. We use the quantitative landscape of the disease spreading in China as a benchmark and utilize infection data from eight countries to estimate the complete evolution of the infection in each of these countries. This analysis predicts both the expected number of daily infections per country and, perhaps more importantly, the duration of the epidemic in each country. Our predicted data show that Italy, Spain and the Netherlands have passed the highest point of infection while Greece, France, and Germany are close to it.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Internet latency: A large-scale study

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed the way of living of billions of people in a very short time frame. In this paper, we evaluate the impact on the Internet latency caused by the increased amount of human activities that are carried out on-line. The study focuses on Italy, which experienced significant restrictions imposed by local authorities, but results about Spain, France, Germany, ... [Show full abstract] Sweden, and the whole of Europe are also included. The analysis of a large set of measurements shows that the impact on the network can be significant, especially in terms of increased variability of latency. In Italy we observed that the standard deviation of the average additional delay – the additional time with respect to the minimum delay of the paths in the region – during lockdown is ∼3−4 times as much as the value before the pandemic. Similarly, in Italy, packet loss is ∼2−3 times as much as before the pandemic. The impact is not negligible also for the other countries and for the whole of Europe, but with different levels and distinct patterns.
