INTRODUCTION
Lichenicolous fungi are a highly specialised group of organisms which live ex-
clusively on lichens. Most commonly they are host-specific parasites, but they
can also be broad-spectrum pathogens, saprotrophs or commensals (Diederich
et al. 2018). The history of research into lichenicolous fungi in Ukraine started in
33

Western Ukraine with a few floristic surveys (Hawksworth 1992, Kondratyuk &
Khodosovtsev 1997, Kondratyuk & Kolomiyets 1997). Currently, the interest in the
study of lichenicolous fungi is growing again. However, it is concentrated in only
a few regions in Southern and Western Ukraine as well in the Carpathian Mts.
(Khodosovtsev & Darmostuk 2017b, Darmostuk et al. 2018, Gromakova 2018).
A study of the diversity of lichenicolous fungi on the local scale is one of the
main ways to explore regional diversity (Hafellner 2018). Only 19 species of
lichenicolous fungi were known from Ternopil Oblast before our recent research.
Such a small number indicates a low level of mycofloristic knowledge in the
Ternopil Oblast, since some other Ukrainian regions have recorded more than 50
species (Darmostuk & Khodosovtsev 2017). Therefore, the Ternopil Oblast re-
mains one of the “white spots” in the diversity of lichenicolous fungi. The aim of
this paper is to contribute to the local knowledge of lichenicolous fungi; twenty-
nine species are reported as new to the region in the present study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Surveyed sites. Lichenicolous fungi were collected during field trips in
January and August 2019 to Berezhans’kyi district (Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine).
Field surveys were carried out at the following sites (coordinates of the centre of
the area are provided for each site):
1. Town of Berezhany, 49°26'42.1" N, 24°54'58.6" E, 23 January 2019;
2. Village of Rai, “Arboretum Rai” protected area, 49°25'43.9" N, 24°54'07.5" E,
22 January 2019;
3. Village of Posukhiv, 49°24'45.6" N, 24°58'00.7" E, 13 January 2019;
4. Near village of Posukhiv, Mt. Lysonia, 49°25'10.3" N, 24°58'57.5" E, 19 January
2019;
5. Village of Lisnyky, Monastyrok Reserve Landmark, 49°26'37.0" N, 24°52'12.3" E,
9 August 2019.
Morphological study and identification. The specimens were ex
-
amined by standard microscope techniques using LOMO microscopes MBS-1 and
MICROMED-2. Microscopical examination was done in water, 10% KOH, and
Lugol’s iodine solution, directly or after pretreatment with KOH, or Brilliant
Cresyl Blue. The measurements were made in water with an accuracy of 0.5 μm
for conidia and conidiogenous cells (the different number of measurements for
Stagonospora exasperatulae is due to the limited number of cells available for
measuring in the studied material). The sizes are given as (min.) x–SD – x+SD
(max.), where x is the average and SD is the standard deviation. The photographs
were taken with a Levenhuk C510 NG camera.

The species were identified using different keys for particular genera of
lichenicolous fungi (e.g. Diederich 1996, Ertz et al. 2015, Hawksworth et al. 2016,
Darmostuk 2019). All examined specimens were collected and identified by
V. Darmostuk and O. Sira and deposited in the lichenological herbarium of Kherson
State University (KHER) and the personal herbarium of the first author (herb.
VD). Some specimens of the most common species (Arthonia apotheciorum,
Athelia arachnoidea,Laetisaria lichenicola,Lichenoconium erodens and
Marchandiomyces corallinus) were not deposited in the herbarium. Species
new to Ukraine are indicated by an asterisk.

DARMOSTUK V.V., S IRA O.YE.: NEW AND REMARKABLE LICHENICOLOUS FUNGI FROM TERNOPIL OBLAST
* Didymocyrtis foliaceiphila (Diederich, Kocourk. & Etayo) Ertz & Diederich
Specimen examined: Site 2, on Punctelia subrudecta on Salix (KHER 12571).
This species is common in Europe and can be distinguished from other 2-guttu-
late Didymocyrtis species by its very narrowly ellipsoid conidia (5.2)5.6–7.4(7.6)
× (2.0)2.4–2.6(3.2) μm (n = 30), length/width ratio (2.0)2.3–3.0(3.4). The specimen
examined fits well to the concept of D. foliaceiphila by morphological features.
It was described on Cladonia spp., but also reported on Parmelia species (Ertz
et al. 2015). Punctelia subrudecta is a new host species.
Erythricium aurantiacum (Lasch) D. Hawksw. & A. Henrici

SUMMARY
Including 29 species presented in this study, the total number of currently
known lichenicolous fungi in Ternopil Oblast has increased to 48 species.
Didymocyrtis foliaceiphila,Stagonospora exasperatulae and Tremella everniae
are reported from Ukraine for the first time. Cladosporium licheniphilum,
Henfellra muriformis,Illosporiopsis christiansenii,Laetisaria lichenicola,
Lichenoconium pyxidatae and Refractohilum intermedium are new to the
forest-steppe zone of Ukraine.
The species Athelia arachnoidea,Erythricium aurantiacum,Illosporiopsis
christiansenii,Lichenoconium erodens and Lichenoconium lecanorae are wide-
spread in Ukraine and were frequently observed at the localities of the study area.
Most species are common lichenicolous fungi in the forest and forest-steppe
zones of Ukraine and occur mainly on corticolous lichens. These are Abrothallus
bertianus,Arthonia phaeophysciae,Clypeococcum hypocenomycis,Lichenochora
weillii and Taeniolella punctata.Laetisaria lichenicola and Xenonectriella
leptaleae are probably also common species in Ukraine, but we need more data
to verify this hypothesis.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We express our gratitude to Dr. Wolfgang von Brackel (Germany) for valuable
discussions on Henfellra muriformis. We also thank the editor and reviewers for
their constructive comments which have improved the manuscript.

The “Fourth checklist of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi of Ukraine”, including 2150 accepted scientific names based on published records as well as analysis of current additions are provided. Current additions include 439 taxa newly recorded for Ukraine after the third checklist of lichens of Ukraine by Kondratyuk et al. (2010) and 262 nomenclatural novelties. Annotations to each taxon of 318 newly recorded to Ukraine are provided in the style of the second checklist by Kondratyuk et al . (1998), i.e. data on phytogeographical regions and administrative districts (oblasts) of Ukraine as well as references to published papers are provided. Among current additions 99 taxa were annotated in the Checklist of lichenicolous fungi of Ukraine by Darmostuk and Khodosovtsev (2017) and consequent references to the latter are provided. The conclusion confirms the earlier recommendation that national checklists of lichens are to be re-published more often than once a decade.

The genus Lichenoconium (Lichenoconiaceae, Ascomycota) in Ukraine. Ukrainian Botanical Journal, 76(2): 101-113. Abstract. Revision of Ukrainian Lichenoconium specimens is provided. This genus is characterized by immersed to semi-immersed black globose conidiomata, phialidic hyaline conidiogenous cells and olive to brown simple conidia. Seven species of the genus are reported from the territory of Ukraine. These are L. aeruginosum, L. erodens, L. lecanorae, L. lichenicola, L. pyxidatae, L. usneae and L. xanthoriae. These species were found on thalli and apothecia of 18 different genera of lichens. Lichenoconium aeruginosum, L. lichenicola and L. pyxidatae have clear host specificity and grow only on one host genus. Other four species do not have host specificity. Lichenoconium erodens and L. lecanorae are widespread in Ukraine. Lichenoconium usneae is reported for the first time from the steppe zone of Ukraine. Seirophora lacunosa is a new host species of L. usneae. New localities of L. lichenicola and discussion about older dubious records are presented. Investigated Licheniconium species has parasitic life-strategy and affected the lichens that have mechanical damage or those weakened by other lichenicolous fungi. Lichenoconium pyxidatae and Didymocyrtis cladoniicola play an important role in regulating the populations of Cladonia foliacea in the Lower Dnipro sands. This phenomenon is known as "phomosis of Cladonia". Description, host lichens species, data about distribution in Ukraine, examined specimens and notes are provided for each species. An original identification key for Ukrainian species of Lichenoconium is given. Keywords: host specificity, lichenicolous fungi, parasitic life-strategy Дармостук В.В. 2019.

Lichenicolous fungi represent a highly specialized and successful group of organisms that live exclusively on lichens, most commonly as host-specific parasites, but also as broad-spectrum pathogens, saprotrophs or commensals. We present here the most recent update to the classification of lichenicolous fungi in the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota to genus level, arranged phylogenetically according to published classifications. For each genus, all known lichenicolous taxa (obligately lichenicolous taxa, lichenicolous lichens, and facultatively lichenicolous taxa) are listed, along with information about types, synonyms, pertinent literature and whether or not molecular data are available for any of the listed species. The number of accepted lichenicolous fungi is now 2319, with 2000 obligately lichenicolous species, subspecies or varieties, 257 lichenicolous lichens and 62 facultatively lichenicolous taxa. These species are found in 10 different classes of Fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota), 55 orders, 115 families and 397 genera. The 2319 total taxa is an increase from the 1559 total species reported in the last published catalogue in 2003, and a larger number than the approximately 1800 reported in the most recent online checklist (www.lichenicolous.net) posted in January 2018. Of the total number of taxa, 2219 (96%) are ascomycetes and 100 (4%) are basidiomycetes. Of the 397 genera containing lichenicolous species, c. 50% (198) are entirely lichenicolous. In addition, six families (Abrothallaceae, Adelococcaceae, Cyphobasidiaceae, Obryzaceae, Polycoccaceae, Sarcopyreniaceae) and two orders (Abrothallales, Cyphobasidiales) are entirely lichenicolous. Sequence information is available for lichenicolous species in 128 (32%) of the 397 genera containing lichenicolous species, and in 56 (28%) of the 198 entirely lichenicolous genera. Many species are known from only one host lichen, but it is likely that broader host ecologies will be discovered as new sequence information is obtained from ongoing microbiome studies. Phaeopyxis Rambold & Triebel is considered as a new synonym of Bachmanniomyces D.Hawksw., resulting in five new combinations B. australis (Rambold & Triebel) Diederich & Pino-Bodas (≡ P. australis), B. carniolicus (Arnold) Diederich & Pino-Bodas (≡ Biatora carniolica), B. muscigenae (Alstrup & E.S.Hansen) Diederich & Pino-Bodas (≡ P. muscigenae), B. punctum (A.Massal.) Diederich & Pino-Bodas (≡ Nesolechia punctum) and B. varius (Coppins, Rambold & Triebel) Diederich & Pino-Bodas (≡ P. varia). As a consequence of a phylogenetic analysis including new sequences, Dactylospora Körb. is regarded as a new synonym of Sclerococcum Fr.: Fr., resulting in one new name (S. acarosporicola Ertz & Diederich) and 46 new combinations. Sclerococcaceae Réblová, Unter. & W.Gams is considered as a new synonym of Dactylosporaceae Bellem. & Hafellner. The new Sclerococcum ophthalmizae Coppins is described. Sclerophyton occidentale Herre is lectotypified on the lichenicolous fungus present in the type specimen and becomes a younger synonym of Sclerococcum parasiticum. A replacement name is Arthonia polydactylonis Diederich & Ertz (≡ A. ceracea). Further new combinations are Abrothallus lobariae (Diederich & Etayo) Diederich & Ertz (≡ Phoma lobariae), A. psoromatis (Zhurb. & U. Braun) Diederich & Zhurb. (≡ P. psoromatis), Asteroglobulus pyramidalis (Etayo) Diederich (≡ Cornutispora pyramidalis), Didymocyrtis grumantiana (Zhurb. & Diederich) Zhurb. & Diederich (≡ Phoma grumantiana), Epithamnolia atrolazulina (Etayo) Diederich (≡ Hainesia atrolazulina), Gyalolechia epiplacynthium (Etayo) Diederich (≡ Fulgensia epiplacynthium), Nesolechia doerfeltii (Alstrup & P.Scholz) Diederich (≡ Phacopsis doerfeltii), N. falcispora (Triebel & Rambold) Diederich (≡ P. falcispora), N. oxyspora var. fusca (Triebel & Rambold) Diederich (≡ P. oxyspora var. fusca), Preussia peltigerae (Brackel) Diederich (≡ Sporormiella peltigerae), Scutula curvispora (D.Hawksw. & Miadl.) Diederich (≡ Libertiella curvispora), S. didymospora (D.Hawksw. & Miadl.) Diederich (≡ L. didymospora), Stigmidium haesitans (Nyl.) Diederich (≡ Verrucaria haesitans), and S. parvum (Henssen) Diederich (≡ Pharcidia parvum). © 2018 by The American Bryological and Lichenological Society, Inc.

It is characterized by globose ostiolate perithecia, 2–3 septate hyaline periphyses, unitunicate 8-spored asci, and unicellular ellipsoid brown ascospores. This species, close to Roselliniella microthelia, has shorter periphyses, smaller asci, and ascospores, and its hosts. Brackelia lunkei, Henfellra muriformis, Lichenoconium aeruginosum, Lichenohendersonia squamarinae, Lichenostigma dimelaenae, Sphaerellothecium atryneae, Stigmidium epistigmellum, S. stygnospilum, Pronectria xanthoriae, Refractohilum achromaticum, and Zwackhiomyces lithoiceae are reported for the first time from Ukraine. Two species are new for the plains of Ukraine, three are new to the steppe zone of Ukraine, and one species is new to Crimea. A key to the known Roselliniella species is provided.

The corticolous lichen communities in the old parks of Kherson region are presented by five new associations and two subassociations. Alyxorio varii-Xanthorietum parietinae has diagnostic species Alyxoria varia, Phaeophyscia nigricans, Scythioria phlogina and forms under influence of the sea winds in arid condition on a neutral bark of old trees (Fraxinus excelsior, F. pensilvanica, Populus alba, Salix alba). Melanelixio subargentiferi-Ramalinetum farinaceae has diagnostic species Melanelixia subargentifera, Phlyctis argena, Ramalina farinacea and colonize of the old trees with neutral bark (Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur) in shaded steppe forests and parks. Pioneer hemibasophilous, xerophilous, heliophylous association Rinodino pyrini-Calogayetum lobulatae forms on bark of the different trees in young parks of the southern Ukraine and differs from other nitrophylous communities by Calogaya lobulata, Myriolecis hagenii and Rinodina pyrina diagnostic species. These association are belong to the Xanthorion parietinae Оchsner 1928 alliance. Nitrophilous, heliophilous, xerophilous association Amandineo punctati-Xanthorietum parietinae subass. typicum is widespread in southern Ukraine on different tree species and has diagnostic species Amandinea punctata, Physcia adscendens and Xanthoria parietina. Subassociation Amandineo punctati-Xanthorietum parietinae subass. candelarielletosum efflorescentis has diagnostic species Pleurosticta acetabulum and Candelariella efflorescens and found in the old parks in southern Ukraine. Ombrophilous, scyophilous, mesophilous communities of the association Chaenotheco trichiali-Amandinietum punctatae has diagnostic species Amandinea punctata and Chaenotheca trichialis and forms on old trees at age 100–200 years (Quercus robur, Populus alba, P. nigra). It is member of alliance Buellion canescentis Barkman 1958. Lectotypes of association Buellietum punctiformis typicum Barkman 1958, Parmelietum acetabulae typicum Ochsner 1928, Physcietum adscendentis typicum Ochsner & Frey 1926 are selected.

The checklist is based on 137 references and it includes data on the distribution of 220 taxa of lichenicolous fungi in Ukraine. Four species are based on dubious records. The Crimea (80 species) and Carpathians Mts (64 species) have highest observed species diversity of the lichenicolous fungi. Among plain territories, most species-rich regions are Kherson (64 species) and Mykolaiv (37 species), and both regions were intensively surveyed for lichenicolous fungi. Most frequent host genera recorded are Lecanora s. lat. (23 species), Cladonia (17 species), Xanthoria s. lat. (15 species), Aspicilia s. lat. (14 species) and Caloplaca s. lat. (13 species). Most diverse taxonomical groups of lichenicolous fungi recorded are Capnodiales (21 species), Arthoniales (18 species) and Hypocreales (13 species). Katherinomyces cetrariae, Lichenochora hypanica, Lichenostigma svandae, Norrlinia medoborensis, Phoma pisutii, Pronectria diplococca, P. caloplacae, Rosellinula frustulosae, Sphaerellothecium aculeatae, Pleospora xanthoriae, Trichoconis hafellneri and Zwackhiomyces polischukii were described from type localities in Ukraine.
