Abstract and Figures

Alloclita canariensis Koster & Junnilainen sp. nov. is described from the Canary Islands Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. Two specimens from Gran Canaria were previously misidentified as A. francoeuriae Walsingham, 1905, a North African species. We record A. francoeuriae also as new for the Canary Islands, from Fuerteventura. The potential hostplants of A. canariensis are Asteriscus species (Asteraceae). DNA barcodes of both species are provided and compared with five other Alloclita species. The related Alloclita subitariella (Riedl, 1993), only known from the holotype from Saudi Arabia, is redescribed. These three species are placed in the new Alloclita francoeuriae group.

The Ethmia terminella group is reviewed. Three species and one subspecies are recognized: E. terminella terminella Fletcher, 1938, E. terminella micropunctella Amsel, 1955, E. bennyi Falck & Karsholt, sp. n. (Spain: Gran Canaria) and E. pseudoterminella Falck & Karsholt, sp. n. (Spain: Fuerteventura, Morocco). Adults and genitalia of these four taxa are illustrated. The taxonomic results are supported by the DNA barcodes from sequencing of the 658 bp fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene.

Based on recent field work, mainly by the first author, we record the following eleven species of Microlepidoptera as new to the Canary Islands: Prays peregrina Agassiz, 2007 (Praydidae); Epicallima mikkolai (Lvovsky, 1995) (Oecophoridae); Stathmopoda auriferella (Walker, 1864) (Stathmopodidae); Scythris albidella (Stainton, 1867), Scythris eucharis Walsingham, 1907, Scythris amplexella Bengtsson, 2002, Scythris mus Walsingham, 1898, and Enolmis acanthella (Godart, 1824) (Scythrididae); Bifascia nigralbella (Chrétien, 1915), Bifascioides leucomelanella (Rebel, 1917), and Pyroderces apicinotella (Chrétien, 1915) (Cosmopterigidae). We also describe three hitherto undescribed species: Tortilia flavescens Falck & Karsholt, sp. n. (Stathmopodidae), Scythris brithae Falck & Karsholt, sp. n., and Scythris grancanariella Falck & Karsholt, sp. n. (Scythrididae). The family Oecophoridae, in its present concept, is new to the Canary Islands. We also deal with two species of Cosmopterigidae, which were formerly recorded from the Canary Islands, but not included in the catalogue by VIVES MORENO (2014): Anatrachyntis rileyi (Walsingham, 1882) and C. gerasimovi Danilevsky, 1950. We moreover discuss the genera Coccidiphila Danilevsky, 1950 and Ascalenia Wocke, 1876 in the Canary Islands and conclude that the occurrence of C. ledereriella (Zeller, 1850), C. danilevskyi Sinev, 1997 and Ascalenia vanella (Frey, 1860) in these islands is unconfirmed, and they should be removed from the list of Canary Island Lepidoptera. Photographs of adults of all species are shown. Photographs of the genitalia are either shown or references are given to literature where they are figured.

Contribution to the knowledge of the Microlepidoptera of Spain, with description of one new species (Insecta: Lepidoptera) A new species Oinophila blayi Vives & Gastón, sp. n., is described. Two genus Niphonympha Meyrick, 1914, Sardzea Amsel, 1961 and fourteen species: Niphonympha dealbatella Zeller, 1847, Tinagma balteolella (Fischer von Rösslerstamm, [1841] 1834), Alloclita francoeuriae Walsingham, 1905 (Canary Islands), Epicallima bruandella (Ragonot, 1889), Agonopterix astrantiae (Heinemann, 1870), Agonopterix kuznetzovi Lvovsky, 1983, Depressaria halophilella Chrétien, 1908, Depressaria cinderella Corley, 2002, Metzneria santolinella (Amsel, 1936), Phtheochroa sinecarina Huemer, 1990 (Canary Islands), Sardzea diviselloides Amsel, 1961, Pempelia coremetella (Amsel, 1949), Epischnia albella Amsel, 1954 (Canary Islands) and Metasia cyrnealis Schawerda, 1926 are recorded from Spain for the first time. Four Lectotypus: Nephopteryx pseudoflorella Schmidt, 1933, Nephopteryx anerastica Snellen, [1880] 1892, Crambus bolivarellus Schmidt, 1930 and Hylophila prasinana var. hispanica Fernández, 1931, are designated. Eucosma cana (Haworth, 1811) and Cydia blackmoreana (Walsingham, 1903) are mentioned from the Canary Island for the first time. The presence in the Canary Island of Pyralis manihotalis Guenée, 1854, is confirmed. A new synonymy of Hylophila prasinana var. hispanica Fernández, 1931, syn. n. of Pseudoips prasinana (Linnaeus, 1758), is designed. Five new combinations: Pima leucomixtella (Ragonot, 1887), comb. n., Pima pempeliella (Zerny, 1936), comb. n., Pima milka (Roesler, 1990), comb. n., Pima leucoloma (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855), comb. n., Asalebria (Praesalebria) pseudoflorella (Schmidt, 1934), com. n., are established.

The genus Cosmopterix Hübner of continental Sub-Saharan Africa (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea: Cosmopterigidae)

The genus Cosmopterix Hübner, [1825] of continental Sub-Saharan Africa is revised. A total of 77 species are recognized and 56 species are described as new. Of eight new species, all known only from females, the validity of the species cannot be confirmed with certainty. Four new synonyms are proposed. Diagnoses, descriptions, and type information are provided for each species. Watercolours of the adults, line drawings of the wing venation, the male and the female genitalia and a key to the species are included, as well as distribution maps. A Global Phylogeny of Leafmining Ectoedemia Moths (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae): Exploring Host Plant Family Shifts and Allopatry as Drivers of Speciation

Host association patterns in Ectoedemia (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) are also encountered in other insect groups with intimate plant relationships, including a high degree of monophagy, a preference for ecologically dominant plant families (e.g. Fagaceae, Rosaceae, Salicaceae, and Betulaceae) and a tendency for related insect species to feed on related host plant species. The evolutionary processes underlying these patterns are only partly understood, we therefore assessed the role of allopatry and host plant family shifts in speciation within Ectoedemia. Six nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers with a total aligned length of 3692 base pairs were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among 92 species belonging to the subgenus Ectoedemia of the genus Ectoedemia, representing a thorough taxon sampling with a global coverage. The results support monophyletic species groups that are congruent with published findings based on morphology. We used the obtained phylogeny to explore host plant family association and geographical distribution to investigate if host shifts and allopatry have been instrumental in the speciation of these leafmining insects. We found that, even though most species within species groups commonly feed on plants from one family, shifts to a distantly related host family have occasionally occurred throughout the phylogeny and such shifts are most commonly observed towards Betulaceae. The largest radiations have occurred within species groups that feed on Fagaceae, Rosaceae, and Salicaceae. Most species are restricted to one of the seven global biogeographic regions, but within species groups representatives are commonly found in different biogeographic regions. Although we find general patterns with regard to host use and biogeography, there are differences between clades that suggest that different drivers of speciation, and perhaps drivers that we did not examine, have shaped diversity patterns in different clades.

DNA barcoding of the leaf-mining moth subgenus Ectoedemia s. Str. (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) with COI and EF1-α: Two are better than one in recognising cryptic species

We sequenced 665bp of the Cytochrome C Oxidase I (COI) barcoding marker for 257 specimens and 482bp of Elongation Factor 1- α (EF1-α) for 237 specimens belonging to the leafmining subgenus Ectoedemia (Ectoedemia) in the basal Lepidopteran family Nepticulidae. The dataset includes 45 out of 48 West Palearctic Ectoedemia s. str. species and several species from Africa, North America and Asia. Both COI and EF1-α proved reliable as an alternative to conventional species identification for the majority of species and the combination of both markers can aid in species validation. A clear barcode gap is not present, and in some species large K2P intraspecific pairwise differences are found, up to 6.85% in COI and 2.9% in EF1-α. In the Ectoedemia rubivora species complex, the species E. rubivora, E. arcuatella and E. atricollis share COI barcodes and could only be distinguished by EF1-α. Diagnostic base positions, usually third codon positions, are in this and other cases a useful addition to species delimitation, in addition to distance methods. Ectoedemia albifasciella COI barcodes fall into two distinct clusters not related to other characters, whereas these clusters are absent in EF1-α, possibly caused by mtDNA anomalies or hybridisation. In the Ectoedemia subbimaculella complex, both sequences fail to unequivocally distinguish the species E. heringi, E. liechtensteini, E. phyllotomella and one population of E. subbimaculella. DNA barcodes confirm that North American Ectoedemia argyropeza are derived from a European introduction. We strongly advocate the use of a nuclear marker in addition to the universal COI barcode marker for better identifying species, including cryptic ones.

Molecular Systematics of the Asteriscus Alliance (Asteraceae: Inuleae) II: Combined Nuclear and Chloroplast Data

Phylogenetic relationships were assessed for 14 taxa in the Asteriscus alliance, a group of three genera within the tribe Inuleae. Species of Asteriscus, Ighermia, and Pallenis occur in desert and coastal habitats throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East, with several species endemic to Macaronesia. Sequence data from the external and internal transcribed spacers of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and from the chloroplast gene ndhF were obtained for all taxa. Analysis of individual and combined data sets support a monophyletic Pallenis but indicate that Asteriscus, as currently delimited, is paraphyletic. Reassignment of Ighermia to its former status as a species of Asteriscus allows Asteriscus to be monophyletic as well. Multiple, independent dispersal events between the continent and Macaronesian islands are required to explain the current distribution of taxa. In general, the island endemics are more derived than continental taxa, but the ultimate origin of the alliance remains unclear. Communicating Editor: Matt Lavin
