ABSTRACT
The genus Cyclodes Guénee (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is redescribed by incorporating external male and female genital
characteristics in its diagnosis.
Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Cyclodes Guénee.

INTRODUCTION
The genus Cyclodes Guénee, 1852 was
erected for its type species Erebus omma Hoeven,
1840 from Java. Hampson (1894) reported C. omma
Hoeven from the Indian limits (Sikkim, Assam,
Kerala). Snellen (1886) added the second species,
Cyclodes spectans Snellen from Indonesia.
Bethune-Baker (1906) included one more species,
C. pulchra Bethune-Baker from New Guinea.
Prout (1926) described one subspecies, C. omma
pulchrior Prout from Indonesia. Poole (1989)
catalogued only three species of genus Cyclodes
Guénee from the Globe. Sivasankarn et al. (2012)
listed the only species, Cyclodes omma Hoeven from
India.
In the present study, the type species C.
omma Hoeven of the genus Cyclodes Guénee has
been collected from the state of Mizoram and
redescribed after incorporating the characteristics
of male and female genitalia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The collection of C. omma Hoeven was made
with the help of light traps. The collected specimens
were killed with the help of ethyl acetate vapour
and processed with standard techniques in
Lepidopterology. The identification of collected
specimens was done with the help of keys
constructed by Hampson, 1894.
OBSERVATIONS
Genus Cyclodes Guénee
Guénee, 1852, in Biosduval & Guénee, Hist. Nat.
Ins. 7: 26.
Type species: Erebus omma Hoeven.
Diagnosis: Palpi smoothly scaled, the 2nd joint
reaching vertex of head, the 3rd joint minute; antennae
simple; thorax hairy; abdomen with strong ridges of
coarse hair; tibiae slightly hairy and without spines;
fore wing with the apex nearly rectangular, outer
margin obliquely rounded; hind wing with vein M2
from above angle of cell. Male genitalia with uncus

long and curved, ending to a small spine; valvae
simple, flap like, attain its maximum width at middle,
a small triangular structure at basal-ventral region;
aedeagus vesica large with patches of weak
sclerotization. Female genitalia with ductus bursae
small, swollen towards corpus bursae; corpus bursae
large, somewhat elongated, signum absent.
