Yijing Integral (YI), A New Natural and Cosmic Bagua

The paper deals with Yijing in Chinese philosophy. Based on a further exploration of the Diagram of the Supreme Polarity of Zhou Dunyi, we develop a cosmological-anthropological model. Heaven and Earth are seen as father and mother of the trigrams. Both in the natural and in the cosmic cycle this model leads us to a new bagua, the YI bagua, and a new arrangement of hexagrams. In the natural cycle, as compared to king Wen's approach, we interchange Earth and Mountain keeping the trigrams in correspondence with the production cycle. This leads to the natural bagua variant. The cosmic cycle fits in a coordinate system. Moreover it corresponds with the cosmic ring and, if we follow the path spiralling, we get the sequence of the trigrams corresponding the production cycle of the Five elements. This leads to the cosmic bagua variant. We compare both variants with each other and with the bagua of king Wen and of Fu Xi.

This Figure shows the complete picture of the new 'YI bagua' of the cosmic cycle. This coordinate system not only shows the images (what the trigram is), but also the forces (what the trigram does). In doing so, we must remember that the forces, not only influence their own trigram, but also affect the other trigrams. In addition, the directions of movement of ego- and alter-intentionality and of immanence and transcendence in relation to the energy status are also indicated. Because the basis of this coordinate system lies with the Integral Theory of Wilber we call this system the 'Yijing Integral' or 'YI bagua’.

Integral Dynamics, A new integration between Wilber's Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics

Currently we get caught up in deep crises that follow each other faster and faster. In this paper, we develop a coherent analytical framework that may tackle the major problems of our time in a coherent and integrated way. We present a new integration of Wilber’s Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics: Integral Dynamics that provide more possibilities for analysis and a step in the direction of the development of a more general model. Upon these Integral Dynamics our approach is as follows. Wilber describes four holarchies from the perspectives of his quadrants. We move on to octants and we ascertain that the value systems of Spiral Dynamics, with their typical colours, fit in thsee octants. Clockwise, except beige and turquoise, the colours of these value systems follow the colours of the rainbow. With Integral Dynamics we are able to perform cyclical and diagonal as well as spiral analysis. Colour spectra help us. We use rainbow colours in the cyclical analysis, complementary colours in the diagonal analysis and the colour spectrum of Spiral Dynamics in spiral analysis. Integral Dynamics differs from Spiral Dynamics Integral. While in Spiral Dynamics Integral the (not-coloured) values in Wilber’s four quadrants are overlapped by the Spiral Dynamics categories (Mind coping capacities) as concentric squares in the typical colours, in Integral Dynamics the (coloured) Spiral Dynamics categories (Life conditions) in eight octants of Wilber’s coordinate system are overlapped by (not-coloured) stages as concentric circles. This provides the opportunity to show the elements of Integral Dynamics also as a Grid.

Confucius and Plato on Virtue and its Implementation in Education for International Understanding: A Comparative Study

In recent years, the Education for International Understanding (EIU) program has become popular in East Asia. The EIU program promotes “international understanding” and aims to cultivate people possessing characters and abilities that prompt mutual cultural respect and reduce conflicts through a variety of educational means. In EIU curricula the concept of virtue cultivation is targeted as the ultimate goal. Some scholars have claimed that we need a value system that is commonly accepted by countries to solve global conflict. But can a value system be commonly accepted across nations and cultures? The present study uses this question to compare two influential philosophers: Confucius and Plato, by examining their representations of virtue. The author found that although there are similarities in these two thinkers philosophies, the differences among these two ideological systems are considerable. Therefore, the author concludes that it is dangerous to assume we have one value system that is universally applicable. Based on my analysis, the author also makes recommendations for current EIU curricula. The author thinks the current EIU program needs to pay special attention to two layered goals. First, the basic layer: to let students know “the fact of others.” In addition to that, EIU program needs to pay attention on the deep-seated level: “the reason of the fact” to reach international understanding.

Seeking the Holy Grail of organisational development: A synthesis of integral theory, spiral dynamics, corporate transformation and action inquiry

Purpose There are several stage‐based models of organisational development (OD) that provide a systematic overview of the developmental potential of organisations. This paper compares four such models – Ken Wilber's integral theory, the spiral dynamics model of Don Beck and Chris Cowan, Richard Barrett's corporate transformation model, and William Torbert's action inquiry model – with the aim of presenting an integrated account of the stages of OD. Design/methodology/approach Integral theory is used as the basis for considering the theoretical scope of these other models of OD. The integral framework is specifically designed to recognise the valid insights of other models of organisational change and, as such, is well suited for situating those insights in a comprehensive and coherent approach for mapping the developmental paths of organisations. The models considered represent some of the more innovative OD approaches. Findings From the comparative analysis an integral model for OD is described. The description includes a new definition of OD which is based on integral theory's core developmental principles. Research limitations/implications The proposed framework provides a means for assessing the scope and specificity of other approaches to OD. It also provides criteria for distinguishing between those approaches that are concerned with incremental or continuous change and those that focus on transformative development. Practical implications The comparative analysis and resulting framework will assist practitioners and consultants in the OD field in developing a better understanding of the relationships between various stage‐based approaches to OD. Originality/value This paper provides a comprehensive framework that can assist in comparing and situating the many approaches to OD that are currently available.

Zhou Dunyi's Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate Explained (Taijitu shuo) : A Construction of the Confucian Metaphysics

Journal of the History of Ideas 66.3 (2005) 307-323 As Derk Bodde correctly has stated, "The theory of yin and yang, the five elements, and their correlates, has for more than two thousand years been the basis for Chinese medicine, alchemy, astronomy, and naturalistic speculation generally." However the yinyang theory provides not only a conceptual basis for Chinese natural science but also a theoretical foundation, within Neo-Confucian moral philosophy, for its teachings on self-cultivation. One of the key points at which the link between Chinese natural philosophy and ethics can be observed is in the work of Zhou Dunyi (Chou Tun-i, 1017–73 CE). Zhou Dunyi, the forerunner of Neo-Confucianism and founder of Daoxue in the Song dynasty, published a diagram of the Supreme Ultimate (taijitu) and wrote a concise 256-word philosophical account of it (taijitu shuo). Zhou's groundbreaking effort sets the parameters in which the yinyang theory was to be assimilated metaphysically and systematically into Confucian thought and practice. By presenting Zhou Dunyi's diagram and the full translation of his taijitu shuo, this essay will call attention to Zhou's thought and seek to understand it on its own merits. The justification for a fresh look at Zhou Dunyi's original endeavor will become apparent in the conclusion to this paper, which will argue that Zhou Dunyi's distinctive approach to the yinyang theory may have a valuable bearing on contemporary discussions on the subject of the historical development of Chinese philosophy, particularly on the progression of the yinyang theory. Obviously, Zhou Dunyi was not the first Confucian to bring the yinyang cosmology into Confucian philosophy. A millennium earlier, the Han thinker, Dong Zhongshu (Tung Chung-shu, 179–104 BCE), commonly regarded as the founder of Imperial Confucianism, explored the relationship between the yinyang theory and Confucian morality. Compared with Zhou Dunyi, Dong Zhongshu's perspective is static and a departure from the original meanings of yinyang. Dong Zhongshu turned the yinyang cosmology into a conceptual validation of imperial Confucianism's commitment to a hierarchical vision of nature and human relationships. It favored a pattern of subordination within human relationships rather than a correlative understanding of social harmony. Dong Zhongshu succeeded in canonizing a particular interpretation of Confucian moral philosophy, one that was criticized, beginning with the May 4th Movement, for its authoritarianism, and its tendency to support the domination of women. By contrast, Zhou Dunyi's metaphysics and ontology created a possibility to reopen these questions, in ways that demonstrate the promise of progress beyond the authoritarian phase initiated with Han Confucianism, and transmitted and expanded in various ways by Neo-Confucians for centuries to come. As a survey of the relevant historical texts indicates, it is difficult to exaggerate the magnitude of Zhou Dunyi's contribution. Zhou is often regarded as one of the five Song masters who first formulated the Neo-Confucian "vista and determined its direction." Zhou Dunyi is appraised as "the pioneer" who "laid the pattern of metaphysics and ethics for later Neo Confucianism." Wing-tsit Chan claims that Zhou Dunyi's originality consists in assimilating "the Taoist element of non-being to Confucian thought," now carefully removed from "the fantasy and mysticism of Taoism." If Neo-Confucianism is generally to be distinguished from earlier forms of Confucian thought by its adaptation of Daoist and Buddhist views, then Zhou Dunyi should be deemed as the first to demonstrate how fruitful this could be. Through Zhou Dunyi's efforts Confucian thought finally acquired an appropriately positive metaphysical foundation, one that bases Confucian moral teaching on an ontology that inspired successive generations of Neo-Confucians' in their philosophical reflections. The precise nature of Zhou Dunyi's influence upon later thinkers regarded as essential to Neo-Confucianism is itself controversial. Though appointed by an old friend, Cheng Xiang, to tutor his two sons, Cheng Hao (1032–85 CE) and Cheng Yi (1033–1107 CE) for less than a year, neither of them accepted Zhou's specific teaching on the Taijitu. 8 emergent levels of human existence are distinguished: automatic, tribalistic, egocentric, saintly, materialistic, sociocentric, cognitive, and experientialistic. These arise "as man solves certain hierarchically ordered existential problems crucial to him in his existence." To each state is associated a particular value system, respectively: reactive, traditionalistic, exploitive, sacrificial, materialistic, sociocratic, existential, and experiential. The problem of moral and ethical decline rests "not so much in the breakdown and discard of "the old' as in the retention of existentially inappropriate values during a period of profound transformation in human existence." Zhou Dunyi’s Philosophy of the Supreme Polarity

ZhouDunyi 周敦頤 (1017–1073), also known as Zhou Lianxi 周濂溪and Zhou Maoshu 周茂叔, has long been regarded as a pioneer of what has become known as the Cheng-Zhu tradition of Learning of the Way (daoxue 道學).1 A native of Daozhou 道洲in present day Hunan, Zhou spent most of his adult life working as a minor official at provincial level. His uneventful career in the government was duly compensated by his brilliant achievements in writing and teaching. During one of his postings in southwestern China, he tutored the young two Cheng brothers—Cheng Hao 程顥 (1032–1085) and Cheng Yi 程頤 (1033–1107)—who later became the leading eleventh-century daoxue thinkers. Through the two Cheng brothers, his writings were passed on to other daoxue thinkers, particularly the great synthesizer Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130–1200). In the last few years of his life, Zhou Dunyi retired at the picturesque Mount Lu in central China. He named his study at his Mount Lu residence after the stream Lianxi (Stream of Waterfalls), hence came his courtesy name Lianxi and his posthumous honorific title Master Lianxi.2
