A second record of Entoloma azureoviride (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) from Brazilian Amazon

Abstract and Figures

A new material collected and the holotype of Entoloma azureoviride were studied. The analysis of these specimens showed some discrepancies with the protologue which are discussed here. The diagnostic characters of this species are the following: fibrillose pileus, blue lamellae, cuboid spores, and abundant oleiferous hyphae in the lamellae trama. It was also observed a peculiar pseudoparenchymatous pileus trama consisting of inflated elements up to 25 µm in diam., that become more elongated towards the hymenium. A comparison of E. azureoviride with other species with blue tints in the subgenus Inocephalus and a discussion about its morphological peculiarity are provided.

The genus Entoloma sensu lato (Entolomataceae) is one of the least studied amongst subtropical Agaricales, despite being very numerous in species. Although molecular analysis has allowed for the characterization of several genera there is little data on the distribution of the Entolomatoid taxa in Pampa, a biome restricted to southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. With collections undertaken in this biome we identified a blue species whose occurrence in Brazil was unknown and which is described in this work: Entocybe haastii (G. Stev.) Largent. A key to all 16 blue Entoloma species reported from Brazil is proposed.

A new species of Entoloma is described from Punjab, Pakistan. Species description is based on morpho-anatomical characterization of basidiomata and molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS and 28S LSU region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Entoloma punjabensis sp. nov. is distinguished by light gray to dark brown smooth pileus with crenate margins, reddish to brown central depression, larger globose to subglobose basidiospores 8.5-13.4 × 7.2-11.5 µm and hyaline hyphae of pileipellis.

O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar o levantamento de espécimes de macrofungos na Reserva Biológica (REBIO) Córrego Grande norte do Espírito Santo. Os espécimes foram coletados em quatro expedições de campo realizadas entre março de 2022 e maio de 2023, fotografados e identificados através de características macro e microscópicas por meio de chaves de identificação e descrições na literatura. Foi analisada a constância ecológica (C%) das espécies e elaboração de um guia de identificação. O filo Ascomycota foi classificado em duas ordens, dois gêneros e duas famílias: Sarcoscyphaceae e Xylariaceae. Basidiomycota foi classificado em sete ordens, 21 gêneros e pertencentes a 16 famílias: Tremellaceae, Auriculariaceae, Agaricaceae, Entolomataceae, Hygrophoraceae, Marasmiaceae, Nidulariaceae, Omphalotaceae, Physalacriaceae, Strophariaceae, Tricholomataceae, Geastraceae, Phallaceae, Gomphaceae, Ganodermataceae e Polyporaceae. Famílias Polyporaceae, Marasmiaceae e Sarcoscyphaceae foram as famílias constantes, apresentando mais de 50% de ocorrência. São registros novos para o estado Cookeina sulcipes, Marasmius ferrugineus, Mutinus caninus, Entoloma azureoviridis, Cyathus striatus e Phaeoclavulina.

Agaricomycetes are highlighted for producing a variety of compounds and enzymes with nutritional and medicinal properties. However, the knowledge of the diversity of this group of fungi is still insufficient, as well as their biological and enzymatic activities. Thus, the objective of this work is to describe the occurrence, biological and enzymatic activities of Agaricomycetes from the Brazilian Amazon. The present study is a systematic review with the literature search done in the following databases: Scielo, Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The descriptors used were Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes, mushroom, antimicrobial activity, antitumor activity, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, immunomodulator, enzymatic activity, and Brazilian Amazon. We used as inclusion criteria articles in Portuguese and English, published between 2010 and 2021 and that had the full text available and presented relevance to the exposed topic, and as exclusion criteria, works not done in the Brazilian Amazon, duplicate articles in the databases search or outside the topic under study. A total of 40 articles, published between 2010 and 2021, were selected for analysis. 230 species of Agaricomycetes fungi were described for the Brazilian Amazon, with the most frequent orders being Polyporales (52.60%), Agaricales (14.35%), and Hymenochaetales (13.91%). Six studies were found on antimicrobial activity for promising Agaricomycete fungi against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and the fungi Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis . For the antioxidant activity, a study described the species Lentinus citrinus with high amounts of antioxidant compounds. For enzymatic activity, five studies reported Agaricomycete fungi producing protease, cellulase, amylase, pectinase, laccase, and xylanase enzymes. This review shows the scarcity of studies on the description and technological potential of Agaricomycetes from the Brazilian Amazon, highlighting the need to encourage the study of this group of organisms.

Cedar towering forests of Kumrat valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan were visited to collect mushrooms during several fungal forays, which revealed two interesting and novel species from genus Entoloma, subgenus Cyanula , both are characterized by clamp-less hyphae and bluish-violaceous tinges on their pilei and stipes. Entoloma kumraticus is characterized by its bluish brown centrally depressed pileus, serrulate lamellar edge, bluish violet fibrillose stipe, dense clusters of cheilocystidia and presence of abundant greyish brown intracellular pigments in terminal cells of pileipellis and in few cheilocystidia. The key characters of Entoloma swatica are light brownish olive pileus with violet-blue finely fibrillose covering, translucently striated with radial stripes, blackish brown lamellar edge with clusters of cheilocystidia which are often septate and scaly, fibrillose slightly twisted violet blue stipe. Both new species are described and illustrated here, based on morphological and molecular evidence. E. kumraticus and E. swatica formed distinct phylogenetic lineages based on the sequences of nuclear ribosomal ITS and LSU gene regions.

A new agaric species, Entoloma mengsongense, is described and illustrated from samples collected in Mengsong, Yunnan Province, China. Microscopic observations were carried out to describe the micro- and macromorphological characteristics of specimens, and molecular identification was performed to verify the novelty of the species. The species is mainly recognized by its conical to plano-concave pileus, with yellowish brown fibril and 4–8 × 4–6 µm sized, cuboid–quadrate basidiospores. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using ITS sequence data also indicated that this is a new species closely related to E. virescens and E. hochstetteri. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic differences separate E. mengsongense from all other known species of Entoloma.

Entoloma virescens, a rare mushroom with deep blue coloring and cuboid spores, is recorded for the first time in the Caatinga biome in Brazil. The relevance of this finding is that such area is characterized by an atypical environment for the occurrence of species normally considered from temperate and humid tropical regions. The record is fully described and illustrated. Also, a brief analysis of taxonomical features and geographical distribution of the taxon are included.

The new combination Pouzarella dysthales var. acystidiosa comb. et stat. nov. is proposed. We also provide the first record of P.ferreri sp. prov. for Brazil. Both species were collected on a taxonomic survey carried out in areas of secondary forest of the Atlantic Rain Forest biome in South Brazil. Both species are classified in Pouzarella section Dysthales subsection Dysthales.

Four new species of Alboleptonia are described from Puerto Rico and new distribution records for Alboleptonia are noted for Puerto Rico and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Information from examination of the type collections of Alboleptonia aripoana, A. cyathiformis, and A. hyalodepas is discussed. Clarification of conflicting reports in the literature concerning the application of A. hyalodepas is presented and a lectotype is designated. Two new combinations are also made for Entoloma minutoalbum and E. talisporum. A key to the taxa of Alboleptonia occurring in and around the Caribbean region is also provided.
