Impact of Mobile Phone Usage on Academic Performance

As cell phone technology continues its rapid development, the device appears capable of contributing to student learning and improved academic performance. The recent rapid increase in cell phones has influenced multiple aspects of our daily lives, particularly those of Students. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to determine the influence of the mobile phone usage on academic performance among male and female students of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. A face to face survey was conducted among 274 students which include 159 male students and 115 female students ranging from second year to fourth year from different departments of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Results depict that gender, age and relationship with opposite sex have a significant positive effect on students' academic performance. However, marital status, spending time on a mobile phone, negative effect of mobile phone and application usage while studying has a negative effect on students' academic performance. Cell phones are undeniably convenient, helpful tools for study and can be a hurtful source of distraction depending on the attitude and use pattern of a student. The author, however, suggests that mobile phone designers must take into account how young people use cell phones for educational purposes.

Background: There is a constant concern that the pattern of mobile phone usage may have harmful effects on physical and mental health of people. There is insufficient evidence regarding this potential risk.Hence, our objective is to study the pattern of mobile phone usage and it’s association with stress among university students.Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out among 185 students in a private university in Noida, UP. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Perceived stress scale (PSS) was used for measuring stress level. Descriptive statistics was used to explore data. Chi-square test was used to study the association between categorical variable. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.Result and Conclusion: There were 62.2% females and 37.8% males. Low stress symptoms were reported by 17.8% students, moderate 74.6% and high stress in 7.6% students. We concluded that there was Asymptotic significance between stress and using mobile phone for more than 180 minutes in a day(p=0.001), checking phone in between sleep(p=0.004), burning eye sensation(P=0.025) and mobile phone addiction(P=0.001).

Smartphones are being used by each and every one today as smartphone technology continues its rapid development.Smartphones are undeniably convenient, helpful study tools and can be a hurtful source of distraction depending on a student'sattitude and use pattern. A nationwide survey conducted in 2010 shows that mobile phones are adolescents' most necessarycommunication medium. It has virtually affected society's accessibility, security, safety, and coordination of business and socialactivities and has hence become a part of the culture of the whole world. Our aim and objective is to determine the prevalenceof early use of smartphones and co-relate with academic performance and to find out the Prevalence of early use of smartphonesin college-going students. 95 college-going students from the College of Physiotherapy who met the inclusion criteria and werebetween the ages of 18 and 26 were chosen for this observational study, which was conducted. The procedure was described,and the appropriate consent was obtained. Data on demographics were collected. The goal of the investigation was stated tothem. This study sought to determine the effects of mobile phone internet usage on students’ achievements in selected Tanzanian higher learning institutions. Cross sectional survey design was adopted in collecting data from 204 conveniently selected respondents from the population of students who were studying at the National Institute of Transport and the University of Dar es Salaam. Data was collected by using a questionnaire whereby analysis involved both descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics revealed that academic uses of mobile phone internet are more dominant, followed by social uses and economic uses. The inferential statistics revealed that social and academic uses variables make significant unique contributions to the prediction of the dependent variable, students’ achievements with economic uses having insignificant contribution to the variable. The study recommended that given uncontrollable uses of mobile phone internet among students, some initiatives are essential as a proactive measure for enhancing students’ academic excellence and minimizing serious vulnerabilities associated with irresponsible internet usage.

Impact of mobile phone especially smart phone on secondary level students at Kotalipara Upazila of Gopalganj district was studied at Kotalipara, Gopalganj, from Jnuary 2023 to June 2023. This research was conducted to find out the existing status of using smart phones in educational and non-educational purpose by secondary level students. This study also highlighted the various adverse aspects of health damage due to excessive use of mobile phone. About 80 students were selected from 10 (Ten) secondary educational institutions or school of Kotalipara, Gopaljonj. Approximately 53.75% male and 45.00% female students were going to the school at secondary level. The student of class nine and class eight was constitute almost 73.75 percent of total smart phone user and most of the students (about 67.50%) got mobile phone from his/her father. About 77.50% students used smart phone two hours/ less than two hours. Most of the students were addicted to using YouTube (40.00%) followed by the facebook (35.00%). The students were using the mobile phone for various purpose such as study (38.75%), listening music (15.0%), watching video (13.75%), playing game (17.50%) and others (15.0%) purpose. In case of academic studies most of the students (about 47.50%) used mobile phone for search the complex answer. Most of the secondary level students were suffered from lack of sleep (45.0%), eye problem (20.0%), headache (17.50%) and neck pain (11.25%). So we should ensure the rational use of mobile phone to get update education and ICT based knowledge. On the contrary, the students cannot save them from the bad effect of mobile phone.

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of smartphone usage and the academic performance of tertiary students in a developing country. Today smartphones have become part of our modern lifestyle. So, it has raised concerns about how the integration of smartphones into education may cause distraction and academic performances of students. The research employs a quantitative approach to gather data from respondents. The findings of the study say all participants own a smartphone. They mostly use smartphones for messaging and socializing. More than 70% of respondents use smartphones positively to learn new words, access course information, and read course material. On the contrary, they use phones during lectures to check notifications and use WhatsApp. Excessive smartphone use can hinder students' attention, increase distraction, and reduce study time. Ultimately it will impact their academic performances. To mitigate these negative effects, educational institutes, parents, and students themselves must work together to establish guidelines for responsible smartphone use and promote a balanced approach to technology integration in the learning process.

A face-to-face survey was done among 274 students, 159 male students and 115 female students ranging from second to fourth year from various college departments. Gender, age, and connection with opposite sex have a considerable favourable influence on pupils' academic achievement, according to the findings. However, marital status, mobile phone usage, and the detrimental effect of mobile phone and application usage while studying all have a negative influence on students' academic performance. Cell phones are indisputably convenient and useful study aids, but they may also be a harmful source of distraction depending on a student's mindset and use behaviour. The author, on the other hand, proposes that mobile phone manufacturers consider how young people utilise cell phones for educational reasons.

OPEN ACCESS: http://sgo.sagepub.com/content/5/1/2158244015573169 The cell phone is ever-present on college campuses and is frequently used in settings where learning occurs. This study assessed the relationship between cell phone use and actual college grade point average (GPA) after controlling for known predictors. As such, 536 undergraduate students from 82 self-reported majors at a large, public university were sampled. A hierarchical regression (R2 = .449) demonstrated that cell phone use was significantly (p < .001) and negatively (β = −.164) related to actual college GPA after controlling for demographic variables, self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, self-efficacy for academic achievement, and actual high school GPA, which were all significant predictors (p < .05). Thus, after controlling for other established predictors, increased cell phone use was associated with decreased academic performance. Although more research is needed to identify the underlying mechanisms, findings suggest a need to sensitize students and educators about the potential academic risks associated with high-frequency cell phone use.

This paper describes a new business model for a cloud voting service, which shifts focus from selling specialized equipment and installation to providing Internet services through personal mobile devices. This incremental innovation only requires existing technologies, such as general Internet service facility and web/mobile system development. The new cloud voting service frees itself from the limitations of specialized equipment and physical location, and thus expands its applications from classrooms to conference rooms in business organizations, as well as to public events in any location with Wi-Fi/WiMax or 3G Internet access. The potential benefits and business model of this new Internet-enabled service are briefly discussed.

In this research we examined the effects of Internet use and videogame playing on children’s academic performance. Gender, race, and income were also considered. Participants were 482 youth, average age 12 years old. One-third were African American and two-thirds were Caucasian American. All measures were completed twice, first in Year 1 and then one year later, Year 2. Results indicated that greater Internet use was associated with better reading skills, but only for youth initially low in reading skills. Videogame playing was associated with better visual-spatial skill but also with lower GPAs. Gender, race and income influenced Internet use, videogame playing and academic performance but not the relationships between using these technologies and academic performance. Implications of the results for increasing the benefits of technology use are discussed.

The proliferation and ease of access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as Facebook, text messaging, and instant messaging has resulted in ICT users being presented with more real-time streaming data than ever before. Unfortunately, this has also resulted in individuals increasingly engaging in multitasking as an information management strategy. The purpose of this study was to examine how college students multitask with ICTs and to determine the impacts of this multitasking on their college grade point average (GPA). Using web survey data from a large sample of college students at one university (N = 1839), we found that students reported spending a large amount of time using ICTs on a daily basis. Students reported frequently searching for content not related to courses, using Facebook, emailing, talking on their cell phones, and texting while doing schoolwork. Hierarchical (blocked) linear regression analyses revealed that using Facebook and texting while doing schoolwork were negatively associated with overall college GPA. Engaging in Facebook use or texting while trying to complete schoolwork may tax students' capacity for cognitive processing and preclude deeper learning. Our research indicates that the type and purpose of ICT use matters in terms of the educational impacts of multitasking.

This study investigated the use of text messaging as an educational tool in a pre-algebra course at a community college in the central region of North Carolina. The research was conducted in two pre-algebra classes with thirty-three students and one instructor. Data were gathered using qualitative and quantitative methods. A mixed method design utilizing surveys, focus groups, and an interview with the instructor was employed to collect data. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data analysis was employed to analyze the thoughts and perceptions of participants and the instructor. Analyses of both qualitative and quantitative data show that participants have favorable dispositions and perceptions to the use of text messaging as an educational tool.

Anecdotal reports indicated that some on-line users were becoming addicted to the Internet in much the same way that others became addicted to drugs or alcohol, which resulted in academic, social, and occupational impairment. However, research among sociologists, psychologists, or psychiatrists has not formally identified addictive use of the Internet as a problematic behavior. This study investigated the existence of Internet addiction and the extent of problems caused by such potential misuse. Of all the diagnoses referenced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1995), Pathological Gambling was viewed as most akin to the pathological nature of Internet use. By using Pathological Gambling as a model, addictive Internet use can be defined as an impulse-control disorder that does not involve an intoxicant. Therefore, this study developed a brief eight-item questionnaire referred to as a Diagnostic Questionnaire (DQ), which modified criteria for pathological gambling to provide a screening instrument for classification of participants. On the basis of this criteria, case studies of 396 dependent Internet users (Dependents) and 100 nondependent Internet users (Nondependents) were classified. Qualitative analyses suggest significant behavioral and functional usage differences between the two groups such as the types of applications utilized, the degree of difficulty controlling weekly usage, and the severity of problems noted. Clinical and social implications of pathological Internet use and future directions for research are discussed.
