Abstract

A possible case of predation in the amber from Chiapas, Mexico: a spider (Araneae, Theridiidae) and its prey, a fly (Diptera, Dolichopodidae). Abstract. The family Theridiidae is probably the most common spider family encountered in amber and has been recorded from Baltic and Dominican ambers. In the case of mexican amber, five species have been recorded; the genus Theridion Walckenaer, 1805 (Theridiidae) is added here as part of the fossil record of Chiapas, with an age of 23 My. Evidence of fossilized cobweb, and a possible case of predation, is reported for the first time from Chiapas amber. The presence of Theridion in Mexican amber could indicate that many of the genera of spiders reported in amber from Chiapas are still part of the extant spiderfauna in this region; future research, focused on analyzing the richness and diversity of spiders, including fossil taxa, in Simojovel de Allende and allude municipalities, could confirm or reject this possibility.


En busca de contribuir al conocimiento de la araneofauna fósil en Chiapas, México, se describe y fotografía una “araña pirata” (Araneae: Mimetidae) descubierta en una pieza de ámbar del municipio de Simojovel de Allende, con una edad de 23 millones de años (Ma). Esta familia fue citada anteriormente en el ámbar del Báltico, República Dominicana y la India. Al mismo tiempo, se actualiza el listado arañas fósiles en el ámbar de Chiapas, registrándose a la fecha 20 especies descritas. Subsecuentemente, este número podría aumentar, con la revisión de nuevo material.

Se agregan dos nuevos registros de arañas fósiles en ámbar del Mioceno temprano (~23 Ma) de Simojovel de Allende, Chiapas, México: Thymoites carboti sp. nov. (Theridiidae) y Mimetus sp. (Mimetidae). Thymoites carboti sp. nov. se describe con base en dos machos y una hembra. Para la familia Theridiidae este registro representa el sexto género registrado en el ámbar de Chiapas. Mimetus sp., se describe con base en una hembra. Sin embargo, no se asigna a un nivel más específico, ya que, debido a las fracturas internas en la pieza de ámbar, no se logran observar varios caracteres diagnósticos. Esta es la primera vez que ambos géneros son registrados para el ámbar de Chiapas, México. Thymoites carboti sp. nov. documenta el primer y más antiguo representante del género Thymoites a nivel mundial. Considerando la información obtenida en esta investigación, el número de arañas fósiles para Chiapas se incrementa en 101 registros, de las cuales se han descrito 24 especies válidas, incluyendo a Thymoites carboti sp. nov. Theridiidae es la segunda familia mejor representada en el ámbar de Chiapas, México, después de Salticidae.

Theridiidae is a family of spiders with the fourth highest richness of extant species worldwide. Fossil Theridiidae is also the family of spiders with the largest number of Cretaceous, Eocene, and Miocene representatives. Phycosoma Pickard-Cambridge, 1880 is a theridiid genus without a fossil representative. In this study, we describe a new fossil species of Phycosoma , P . icti † n. sp., from an adult male specimen found in a piece of amber from the lower Miocene (ca. 23 Ma), from the Montecristo mines near Simojovel de Allende, Chiapas, Mexico. Phycosoma icti † n. sp. can be distinguished from all other Phycosoma males except P . corrugum by the long embolus partly covered by the conductor. In addition, it can be distinguished from P . corrugum by the oblique and constricted median apophysis; the narrow and pointed conductor; the long, curved, and bent theridiid tegular apophysis in its distal portion; and the prosoma ringed in the middle and along the ventral margin. Phycosoma icti † n. sp. represents the oldest recovered record of the genus. Extant Phycosoma species are still present in Chiapas, suggesting an extended evolutionary history of the genus in the region despite major geological changes over this time span in North America. Comprehensive revision of the Class Arachnida in the fossil record of Mexico was presented. According to data collected, fossil arachnids comprise seven orders, 38 families, 53 genera, and 41 named/valid species: two nomina dubia, one nomen dubium, and 24 incertae sedis. Forty-one species represent fossil diversity of Arachnida: one Amblypigi, 25 Araneae, one Mesostigmatha, two Pseudoscorpiones, ten Sarcoptiformes, one Scorpiones, and one Trombidiformes. The work also includes an online database ( www.riquelmelab.org.mx) of the catalog for consultation and permanent updating. Se presenta una revisión exhaustiva de la clase Arachnida en el registro fósil de México. Según los datos recogidos, los arácnidos fósiles comprenden siete órdenes, 38 familias, 53 géneros y 41 especies nombradas, dos nomina dubia, una nomen dubium y 24 incertae sedis. Cuarenta y una especies representan la diversidad fósil de Arachnida: un Amblypigi, 25 Araneae, un Mesostigmatha, dos Pseudoscorpiones, diez Sarcoptiformes, un Scorpiones, y un Trombidiformes. Esta obra incluye también una base de datos en línea ( www.riquelmelab.org.mx) de este catálogo para su consulta y actualización permanente.
