Romantic Relationships and Risky Sexual Behaviour among In-School Adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract

Romantic relationships are important aspects of adolescent development. in Nigeria, ,most parents do not support romantic relationships among adolescents. Many adolescents are however involved in these relationships without the knowledge or approval of their parents. this study assessed the association between involvement in romantic relationships and risky sexual behaviours among in-school adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. 1178 valid responses were obtained from adolescents. More than three quaters of the adoeslcents had ever been involved in a romantic relationship. Adolescents who were currently involved in romantic relationships were twice more likely to be involved in risky sexual behaviour compared to those who were not in a relationship (OR:2.36; Cl-1.62-3.44).
