A Vocabulary for Visions in Designing for Transitions

Abstract and Figures

Visions of sustainable futures have been proposed as a key component of transition design, offering a way for today's situations and design proposals to be compared and critiqued in the light of desired future states. Such ambitions are necessarily wide-ranging, and call for drawing together strands on design and speculation from diverse sources. Here we seek to add to the momentum by exploring a set of concepts relating particularly to this role of vision in designing for transitions. Building on perspectives and projects from other fields, we present elements of a visionary vocabulary, situating these terms in relation to challenges and opportunities for transition thinking and practice in design research.

We believe that challenging times demand HCI education to pay attention to current real-life, complex, systemic problems. Therefore, we suggest an integrated framework for teaching HCI that involves combining the transition design framework, which suggests long-term, future-oriented design on a large scale toward more sustainable lifestyles, and speculative and critical design. The integration of the two creates spaces for dialogues and debates enabling students to take a more critical perspective concerning possible futures and technology design. We suggest studio-based pedagogy and explicate various aspects of the course, including its theoretical and practical underpinnings, pedagogical approach, and provide examples of projects to illustrate how the framework was used and ways in which speculative and critical design and thinking were crucial for learning. Finally, we highlight six learning facets that might contribute to orienting students’ upcoming professional work towards desirable futures.

This paper discusses plurishops, a workshop-based method that complements the method toolbox of transition design researchers and practitioners. Plurishops are posthuman workshops that embrace pragmatic and emergent approaches and nomadic practices to enhance their alignment with the demands of designing for complexity. The key advantage of plurishops is their use of multiple inquiries simultaneously, which allows for comparisons, easier and quicker identification of relations, and synergies between the inquiries and the domain as a whole. The inquiries are carried out in teams, each finding its exploration trajectory through pre-plurishop activities. The workshop format uses these activities to provide broader grounds for reflection, collective imagination, vision shaping, elucidation of values, and integration of findings towards desired transition design research or practice. Our empirical approach to plurishop design has resulted in a design strategy based on gameful thinking, participatory visioning, and a combined framework drawing on design research and transition design frameworks to structure and organise workshop activities. Through reflection and repeated engagement with plurishops, we have developed guidelines for designing and facilitating them. Furthermore, we illustrate the versatility of plurishops through two distinct examples addressing design in complex domains. The first example is design-oriented and discusses participatory visioning of sustainable smartphone alternatives, taking several different entry points into the topic. The second is method-oriented and focuses on selecting appropriate methods and tools and establishing correlations between methods, inquiries, and possible outcomes concerning the amplification of local sustainability initiatives. Lastly, the advantages gained from the plurishop approach are discussed. We suggest that plurishops are effective and encourage the judicious utilisation of workshops to address the complexities of designing for transitions.

Este trabajo propone continuar con el análisis tentativo de las metodologías del Upcycling como estrategia de economía circular capaz de intervenir en el funcionamiento de los circuitos de producción y consumo tradicionales dentro de la industria de la moda e indumentaria, con la finalidad de transicionar hacia un futuro con perspectiva de sostenibilidad ética y ambiental. Esto “se apoya sobre un cambio en las relaciones de poder entre los creadores de la moda y los usuarios en comparación con la moda consumista. Profesa un sentido de mayor conciencia sobre el proceso de diseño y sus impactos sobre los flujos de recursos, los trabajadores, las comunidades, y los ecosistemas” (Fletcher, 2014:204). Como se ha venido desarrollando en los Cuadernos 132 (páginas 97 a 129) y 105 (páginas 147 a 163) (Vinlove, 2020 y 2021) se considera que estas técnicas tienen el potencial de generar puentes con las prácticas de sostenibilidad, al incentivar un acercamiento a lo local y al sentido de comunidad, apoyado por la generación de identidad e inclusión a través de la personalización y customización de la indumentaria. Esta nueva aproximación se apoya en el enfoque que surge del Diseño para la Transición (Irwin, Kossoff, Tonkinwise, 2015), y se vincula con el diseño emocional, donde “los objetos en nuestras vidas son más que meras posesiones materiales, debido al significado que aportan. Un objeto favorito es un símbolo que construye un modo de pensar positivo” (Norman, 2004:6). Se continúa trabajando sobre como la indumentaria y sus procesos de diseño impactan en los estilos de vida, vinculado a la lista de necesidades y satisfactores establecida por Max-Neef (1991), principalmente las necesidades de participación y de construcción de la identidad.

El Diseño se ha convertido en un fenómeno global, con un alto poder de persuasión social y cultural (Julier, 2008), que junto a su propio modelo de pensamiento de Diseño, y la potencia de las visiones anticipatorias, puede influir sobre las transiciones sociales y técnicas hacia estilos de vida y escenarios sostenibles. Intentionally seeing patterns and drawing links or making metaphors between ostensibly unrelated phenomena could be a method for generative creativity for disruptive improvisation. This paper discusses 'no-technology' ways to create ideas for new interfaces through self-imposed constraints, and offers an event score for a kind of deliberate apophenia as a generative technique.

Although high degrees of reliability have been found for many types of forecasts purportedly due to the existence of accountability, public forecasts of technology are rarely assessed and continue to have a poor reputation. This paper's analysis of forecasts made by MIT's Technology Review provides a rare assessment and thus a means to encourage accountability. It first shows that few of the predicted " breakthrough technologies " currently have large markets. Only four have sales greater than $10 billion while eight technologies not predicted by Technology Review have sales greater than $10 billion including three with greater than $100 billion and one other with greater than $50 billion. Second, possible reasons for these poor forecasts are then discussed including an over emphasis on the science-based process of technology change, sometimes called the linear model of innovation. Third, this paper describes a different model of technology change, one that is widely used by private companies and that explains the emergence of those technologies that have greater than $10 billion in sales. Fourth, technology change and forecasts are discussed in terms of cog-nitive biases and mental models.

There is a resurgence of interest in mental models due to advances in our understanding of how they can be used to help design and due to the development of practical methods to elicit them. This book brings both areas together with a focus on reducing domestic energy consumption. The book focuses on how mental models can be applied in design to bring out behaviour change resulting in increased achievement of home heating goals (reduced waste and improved comfort). This book also offers a method to extract and apply mental models to interface design. The approach enables mental models to be applied across domains when behaviour change was sought, and is validated as a useful design method.

This book focuses on the pattern approach established by the Austrian-born Christopher Alexander, architect, mathematician and philosopher, and collects selected papers on work presented at, or related to the PURPLSOC World Conference held at Danube University Krems, July 3 – 5, 2015. PURPLSOC is the acronym for “In Pursuit of Pattern Languages for Societal Change”, a series of (roughly) biennial conferences on patterns in and with disparate fields such as architecture, design, media, arts, IT, management, pedagogy, social activism, social innovation and diverse grassroots movements.

As materiality of interactive artifacts is diversified with integrated physical and digital materials, metaphoric design approaches in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) go beyond resembling the appearance of physical objects, exploring novel materials and forms of interactive artifacts. The hybrid materialities and forms of artifacts influence how interactivity is perceived, reframing the concept of affordances according to its evolving relationship to metaphors and materialities. By conceptualizing interactive forms in their surface, behavioral and systemic aspects, we examine multifaceted roles of metaphors in HCI from concealing and revealing a formal system to expanding and reifying its meaning; and propose a morphologic perspective on affordances as an invitation for making variations of interactive forms by compositing multiple design resources.
