Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) will change the world and higher education is no exception. AI will change the way we work, the way we learn, and the way we live. This study analyzes the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education. Specifically, this qualitative research will study the changes in higher education caused by AI. This study will also look at how higher education can contribute to AI development. Further, this research will examine the use of AI in higher education delivery and support. As a pioneering research in this field, this study will provide insightful information for educators and detailed knowledge for academic theory building.

INTRODUCTION
Artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as the ability and development of an information technology-based computer systems or
other machines to complete the tasks that usually require human intelligence and logical deduction. Even though AI can
make the world a better place, AI comes with its own issues (Siau, 2018). Take the example of driverless vehicles. Driverless
vehicles open a new era of technology advancement in transportation. It brings huge benefit to both the car industry and the
customers from both economic and practical aspects. The usage of driverless vehicles frees the drivers from the mundane
task of driving and reduces accident rates (e.g., fatigue driving). Nevertheless, driverless vehicles will replace taxi, truck, and
Uber drivers!
Researchers from MIT, Daron Acemoglu, and Boston University's Pascual Restrepo, found out that each additional robot
takes over 5.6 workers' workload in the US, which means almost 6 people are losing their jobs with each robot
implementation (Gray, 2017). Another research conducted by scholars in Oxford University (Grace, Salvatier, Dafoe, Zhang,
& Evans, 2017) estimated that at least 47% of the current jobs in the United States are at a very high risk of being taken over
by AI. More than 54% of the current jobs in Europe are facing the same threat from machines, not in the coming 100 years,
but within the next 20 years. Facing such a severe threat from AI, robotics, and automation, what should people do to stay
competitive in the job market has become the new million-dollar question? Further, how should higher education react to
help their students compete in the AI age?
This nascent study will research on the AI impact on higher education, and the proactive and reactive changes made in the
higher education. This will be a longitudinal action research as one of the researchers is an administrator and will be
formulating curriculum and policy changes to react to and take advantages of the upheavals caused by AI.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be classified into Weak and Strong AI. Weak AI, also known as artificial narrow intelligence,
is designed to be focused on a narrow task. One example of Weak AI is the self-driving vehicle. It is specialized for a specific
task. Another category is the Strong AI, also known as artificial general intelligence. Strong AI is capable of most (if not all)
cognitive functions that a human may have and can apply intelligence to more than one specific problem (Kurzweil, 2005;
Voss, 2017). Strong AI is considered by many prominent researchers and industrialists such as Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates,
and Elon Musk as an existential threat to human civilization. In this research, we focus on Weak AI and the use of the term
AI subsequently in this article means Weak AI.
Impact of AI
Forbes Technology council predicts that by 2030, the potential of artificial intelligence will reach $15.7 trillion in the global
economy. The use of AI is not limited to Amazon and Youtube advertisement applications. AI has also been applied to
recommending new stylish clothing or filtering spam emails. Virtual assistant has been a new trend globally such as Siri,
Googles Assistant, and Cortana. These virtual assistants are now part of people's life. AI is also playing an important role in
the Finance sector such as securing bank accounts and monitoring transaction requests. Another application of AI is the self-
driving vehicles. A number of countries have already put the self-driving vehicles on the road and start experimenting with
driverless trucks for delivering goods.
These AI advancements, however, come at a cost (Siau and Wang, 2018; Siau and Yang, 2017). Researchers from MIT
estimate that the usage of automated transportations could threaten 2.2-3.1 million existing jobs in the U.S. (Rotman, 2017).
University of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute estimates that there is a 50% chance that machines will be able to take
over all types of human jobs in 120 years. The research surveyed 352 scientists from different areas and their answers were
compiled to predict how long it might take for machines to replace human on job positions. The collected result indicates that
there is a good chance that more than 70% of the job functions will be replaced by machines in 50 years (Gray, 2017).
AI Effects on Higher Education
With the job replacements and displacements generated by AI, future job market and required skillsets would be significantly
different from now (Siau, 2017, 2018; Rainie & Anderson, 2017). Multiple studies concluded jobs that involve tasks that are
routine and structured are easier to automate and will be replaced by AI soon. On the contrary, job tasks that are more
unstructured and involved managing people are harder to be replaced by AI. Higher education needs to be adaptive and
evolve continuously.
Higher education will be impacted by AI in many ways and the two major areas are curricula and enrollment. First, AI will
have a sweeping impact on curriculum in higher education. The strength of AI is its speed, accuracy, and consistency. It is a
lost cause to compete with AI on these dimensions. On the other hand, AI is still weak in soft skill such as creativity,
innovation, critical-thinking, problem-solving, socializing, leadership, empathy, collaboration, and communication. This is
not to say that we should ignore the hard skills such as science, math, and engineering. Higher education should still train the
students in the fundamentals of science and math, and at the same time provides opportunities and training for students to
enhance their soft skills. Some universities are already offering AI and Machine Learning courses to not only computer
science students, but also business students as business managers and executives need to understand the capabilities,
limitations, and implications of AI in the business world.
The other impact of AI in higher education is enrollment. Liberal arts and humanities majors may become more popular as
these areas are less susceptible to “AI-invasion.” Areas such as accounting and financial analysis that may be hit hard by AI
may see a drastic drop in enrollment. Also, with the wealth gap and potentially millions (if not billions) out of jobs, higher
education may no longer be affordable to many.
Other possibilities include the use of AI assistants and AI instructors in teaching. Below are some examples of the use of AI
applications in education:

Organizational Change
Organizational change studies how an organization changes its structure, strategies, operational methods, technologies, or
organizational culture to affect change within the organization, and investigates the effects of these changes on the
organization (Hussain, Lei, Akram, Haider, Hussain, & Ali, 2016). Organizational change can be continuous, active, and
evolving (Weick & Quinn, 1999). As AI is expected to result in organizational change in higher education, the following
discusses some of the organizational change theories and models that can form the conceptual and theoretical foundation to
understand such changes.
Lewin’s Change Management Model
Kurt Lewin (1946) concluded that a successful change happens with a three-step process -- unfreezing stage, changing stage,
and freezing stage. In the unfreezing stage, people must be open and encouraged to evaluate their current situations
objectively. This can be the hardest step as one needs to break open the shell of complacency and self-righteousness. When
people have accepted that changes are necessary, then it comes to the changing stage. To implement this step, a long-term
view and positive attitude are necessary. This is particularly true for AI impacts on higher education as the future can be
complicated and unpredictable. After the transition stage is over, the freezing stage takes place to ensure that the changes stay
rather than switching back to the original status.
Kotter’s 8 Step Change Model
Kotter’s 8 step change model is proposed by John Kotter in 1995 (Kotter, 1995). After observing and studying countless
leaders and organizations from the beginning of transformation to how they executed their strategies, and till they completed
the whole transformation successfully, he summarized 8 steps for a successful organizational transition:

2. Build a team dedicated to change
3. Create the vision for change
4. Communicate the need for change
5. Empower staff with the ability to change
6. Create short-term goals
7. Stay persistent
8. Make the change permanent
The focus of this model is on preparing and accepting the change itself and how to get people and employees on board rather
than the actual change.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this research study, a qualitative longitudinal action research will be conducted. Action research focuses on solving an
immediate problem and providing a reflective process of progressive problem solving led by individuals working with others
(Fals-Borda, & Rahman, 1991). It is also defined as a part of a "community of practice" to discover potential issues and
resolve them.
Action research involves actively participating in a change situation and simultaneously conducting research. It is often
designed to be in an existing, long-term organization so as to ensure the continuity of the whole research. Action study can
help to create a better understanding of the research questions and provide supportive evidence to address the research focus.
One of the researchers in this study is an administrator of a college. The administrator is interacting with other administrators
and faculty within and outside his college and institution to formulate policies and plans to better prepare his college for the
AI age. Action research is an appropriate research methodology in this case. Action research enables the researcher to
examine his own plans and policies systematically and carefully, using a scientific and known research method.
EXPECTED THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTRIBUTIONS
AI will be impacting higher education in a significant way. Many jobs will become obsolete and new skill sets will be
required. Higher education needs to rise to the challenge to prepare students for the AI revolution and equip students with the
necessary skill sets to compete in the AI age. This nascent research aims to shed light on the higher education evolution and
revolution as AI advances.

p style="text-align:justify">The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education remains incompletely understood, demanding further evaluation and the creation of robust assessment tools. Despite previous attempts to measure AI's impact in education, existing studies have limitations. This research aimed to develop and validate an assessment instrument for gauging AI effects in higher education. Employing various analytical methods, including Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Rasch Analysis, the initial 70-item instrument covered seven constructs. Administered to 635 students at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology – Gabaldon campus, content validity was assessed using the Lawshe method. After eliminating 19 items through EFA and CFA, Rasch analysis confirmed the construct validity and led to the removal of three more items. The final 48-item instrument, categorized into learning experiences, academic performance, career guidance, motivation, self-reliance, social interactions, and AI dependency, emerged as a valid and reliable tool for assessing AI's impact on higher education, especially among college students.</p

Artificial intelligence (AI) in education transforms the instructional processes and learning competence of students. AI can adapt to the individual learning needs of students. By analyzing students’ progress, performance, and preferences, AI systems can deliver tailored content, recommend additional resources, and provide feedback. The purpose of this study was to develop initial understanding on how AI models help students cope with math anxiety and lack of confidence in engaging with mathematics learning. This exploratory research established the connections between what students feel when using AI and how it benefits them. College students (n = 20) enrolled in different math-related programs (i.e., engineering, statistics/mathematics, computer science, education) were purposively sampled for a one-on-one interview. Thematic analysis indicated that students are now turning to AI models as a coping mechanism to alleviate math anxiety and boost their self-assurance. These AI models function as “mentors” and “math companions” that offer step-by-step explanations and personalized support. Their adaptability and personalized approach make mathematics more accessible to students, with the potential to reduce anxiety and enhance the overall learning experience. Moreover, the use of AI models encourages a sense of independence, motivating students to actively engage in self-guided learning. The findings open new questions about using AI models in improving the self-efficacy and confidence of students in mathematics learning. There is also an opportunity to build an AI-assisted learning with a focus on psychological interventions and behavioral interconnections mediating students’ academic performance.

This article investigates the global impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on higher education, focusing on Kenya. Examining published studies, the prevalence of AI in higher education was found to be highest in Asia (41%), compared to 1% in South America and 2% in Africa. A 2023 global student survey revealed that Generative AI was most popular in Kenya, with a usage rate of 63%. Moreover, a study among students aware of AI content detectors in their institutions indicated a significant reduction in the use of AI-generated content, affirming the deterrent effect of such detectors. The future of higher education is poised for a revolution with AI, particularly in individualized learning. Algorithms will assess academic scores, passions, and preferred learning strategies to tailor personalized education paths, adapting and evolving with the learner. AI technologies have enhanced inclusivity in education, benefiting learners with various impairments. Despite the transformative potential, challenges emerge, including the potential impact on careers requiring specific skills and ethical concerns. The absence of protocols and policies addressing ethical matters in AI learning, such as information accuracy, control, and learner privacy, underscores the need for ethical frameworks. Notably, the article underlines that AI cannot replace human teachers, who bring unique qualities like critical thinking, creativity, and emotional understanding to the educational process. The review shows minimal studies have been conducted on AI in Kenya’s higher Education. The article recommends that institutions of higher learning should employ AI detectors to mitigate cheating

يعد البحث العلمي أحد أهم الركائز الأساسية لتمكين كافة المجتمعات أن تواكب هذا التطور والتحول، من خلال بيان أهمية البحث العلمي كأداة أساسية لفهم العالم من حولنا وقياس أثر هذه التطورات والعلوم المختلفة على جوانب الحياة. تعتبر مهارات البحث العلمي وتلخيصه والكتابة الأكاديمية من أهم الأساسيات لتحقيق النجاح لدى طلبة الدراسات العليا، حيث يتطلب من الباحث الالمام بهذه المهارات والقدرة على جمع المعلومات وتحليلها وتوليد محتوى علمي ذو جودة عالية وهو ما يقتضي مهارات استثنائية في البحث والكتابة. ولا شك أن التطور التقني قد أثر بشكل كبير على أساليب البحث العلمي وإمكانية الوصول للبيانات والمعلومات من خلال مختلف المنصات والبرامج التي أصبحت متاحه للباحثين. ولمواكبة هذا التطور التقني والزمني كان لزاماً استخدام طرق وأدوات أكثر فاعلية من طرق البحث العلمي التقليدية للحفاظ على الاستمراية وجودة البحوث المقدمة. ويُرى في الذكاء الاصطناعي الفاعلية الأكثر مرونة من الأدوات التقنية الأخرى وجميعها تكمل بعضها وتهدف لغاية واحدة. حيث هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى الإجابة على السؤال الرئيسي لها وهو: ما فاعلية استخدام برنامج الذكاء الاصطناعي Typeset.io في تنمية مهارات البحث العلمي واتجاهات طلبة الدراسات العليا نحوه؟ وتم ذلك من خلال معرفة وقياس فاعلية استخدام برنامج الذكاء الاصطناعي Typeset.io في تنمية مهارات البحث العلمي واتجاهات طلبة الدراسات العليا نحوه، وطبقت الدراسة على عينة مكونة من 41 من طلبة الدراسات العليا في جامعات المملكة العربية السعودية.

هدفت الدراسة إلى تحديد متطلبات تطوير إعداد معلم التعليم العام بالجمهورية اليمنية في ضوء اتجاهات الذكاء الاصطناعي من وجهة نظر أعضاء هيئة التدريس بكلية التربية- جامعة صنعاء. واعتمدت الدراسة على المنهج الوصفي. وتمثلت الأداة في استبانة مكونة من (44) عبارة، تم توزيعها إلكترونيًا على عينة بلغت (66) فردًا. وأظهرت نتائج الدراسة: أن جميع المتطلبات حصلت على درجة أهمية كبيرة؛ وعلى مستوى المحاور حصلت المتطلبات المتعلقة بأساليب التدريس على المرتبة الأولى وبدرجة أهمية (عالية جدًا)، تلتها المتطلبات المتعلقة ببرامج الإعداد والتربية العملية ثم متطلبات عملية التقويم، وأخيرًا المتطلبات المتعلقة بسياسة القبول، وجميعها بدرجة أهمية (عالية). كما كشفت نتائج الدراسة عدم وجود فروق دالة إحصائيًا عند مستوى (0.05>œ) بين متوسط استجابة أفراد العينة تعزى إلى متغيري (الدرجة العلمية– سنوات الخدمة)، فيما وجدت فروق تبعًا لمتغير (النوع الاجتماعي) ولصالح (الإناث). وفي ضوء النتائج قدمت الدراسة توصيات عدة، من أبرزها ضرورة تبني البرامج اللازمة لتدريب وتأهيل أعضاء هيئة التدريس في كليات التربية لتطبيق اتجاهات الذكاء الاصطناعي في التعليم، ومراجعة مقررات برامج إعداد معلم التعليم العام في الجامعات اليمنية وتطويرها بما يتوافق مع المتغيرات الرقمية المستحدثة، وتبني برامج التوعية بأهمية توظيف اتجاهات تطبيقات الذكاء الاصطناعي في العملية التعليمية.

هدفت الدراسة إلى تقديم تصور مقترح لتطبيق الذكاء الاصطناعي في الجامعات اليمنية، وتم استخدام المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، بأسلوب الدراسات الاستشرافية (أسلوب دلفاي) للتعرف على متطلبات تطبيق الذكاء الاصطناعي في الجامعات اليمنية من وجهة نظر الخبراء، وتكوّنت عينة الدراسة من الخبراء المختصين ذوي الخبرة الطويلة، والمعرفة الاختصاصية العميقة في الذكاء الاصطناعي ونظم المعلومات الذكية، وبرمجة الحاسوب، وتكنولوجيا المعلومات، وتقنية المعلومات IT، والإدارة والتخطيط، حيث تم اختيار عينة قصدية من الخبراء في الجامعات اليمنية الحكومية والأهلية، بلغت (13) خبيرًا، وتوصلت الدارسة إلى عدة نتائج أهمها: أن هناك توافق لآراء الخبراء حول تطبيق متطلبات أبعاد الذكاء الاصطناعي (بعد المتطلبات التشريعية والتنظيمية، بعد المتطلبات البشرية، بعد المتطلبات التقنية، بعد المتطلبات المالية، بعد المتطلبات الأخلاقية)، حيث كانت نسبة التوافق مرتفعة (96%)، وكانت نسبة التوافق لآراء الخبراء حول أبعاد متطلبات الذكاء الاصطناعي متفاوت، حيث حصل بعد "المتطلبات الأخلاقية" على توافق آراء الخبراء بنسبة (99%)، فيما حصل بعد "المتطلبات التقنية" على توافق آراء الخبراء بنسبة (97%)، بينما حصل بعد" المتطلبات البشرية" وبعد "المتطلبات المالية" على توافق آراء الخبراء بنسبة (96%)، وأخيرًا حصل بعد "المتطلبات التشريعية والتنظيمية" على توافق آراء الخبراء بنسبة (94%)، ولضمان تحقيق النتائج المرجوة من الدراسة الحالية توصي الدراسة بضرورة تبني وتطبيق التصور المقترح لتطبيق الذكاء الاصطناعي في الجامعات اليمنية.

Innovative strategies to promote social support and a sense of belonging are needed urgently as one in three adults worldwide experience loneliness. This Chapter explores the prospect of generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in social support interventions to improve an individual's sense of belonging, social support, and reduce loneliness. This Chapter reviews the prominent areas that AI chatbots are currently being implemented and their outcomes. It compares AI chatbots designed for social companionship with those designed for assistance such as ChatGPT and Bard. It investigates individuals who are more vulnerable and susceptible to using AI chatbots and the possible positive outcomes and negative effects to autonomy. Ethical considerations and limitations of the integration of AI chatbots being employed into today’s society are debated especially in terms of loneliness. Together, the arguments in this Chapter propose the benefits of using AI chatbots as an assistive tool to improve overall well-being by managing time, advising, offering suggestions, and collaborating with the user to indirectly promote a sense of belonging and lessen feelings of loneliness.

In this article, we look at trust in artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), and robotics. We first review the concept of trust in AI and examine how trust in AI may be different from trust in other technologies. We then discuss the differences between interpersonal trust and trust in technology and suggest factors that are crucial in building initial trust and developing continuous trust in artificial intelligence.

Change is crucial for organizations in continuous growing and high competition in business environment. Different theories of change describe the effectiveness of modification of strategies, processes and structures for organizations. The action research model, the positive model and the Lewin's change model submit the views of the phases for change in organization. This study views the Lewin's model as three steps process (unfreezing, movement and refreezing) for change in organization. Although this model sets a general steps to be followed, more information is considered to guide these steps in specific situations. This article is critically reviewed for change theories in different phases of organizational change. In this critical review the change management has constructive framework for managing the organizational change through different phases of the process. This review gives theoretical and practical implications and somehow the immunity to change has been discussed.

The development of new technologies enables learners to learn more effectively, efficiently, flexibly and comfortably. Learners utilize smart devices to access digital resources through wireless network and to immerse in both personalized and seamless learning. Smart education, a concept that describes learning in digital age, has gained increased attention. This paper discusses the definition of smart education and presents a conceptual framework. A four-tier framework of smart pedagogies and ten key features of smart learning environments are proposed for foster smart learners who need master knowledge and skills of the 21st century learning. The smart pedagogy framework includes class-based differentiated instruction, group-based collaborative learning, individual-based personalized learning and mass-based generative learning. Furthermore, a technological architecture of smart education, which emphasizes the role of smart computing, is proposed. The tri-tier architecture and key functions are all presented. Finally, challenges of smart education are discussed.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will transform modern life by reshaping transportation, health, science, finance, and the military. To adapt public policy, we need to better anticipate these advances. Here we report the results from a large survey of machine learning researchers on their beliefs about progress in AI. Researchers predict AI will outperform humans in many activities in the next ten years, such as translating languages (by 2024), writing high-school essays (by 2026), driving a truck (by 2027), working in retail (by 2031), writing a bestselling book (by 2049), and working as a surgeon (by 2053). Researchers believe there is a 50% chance of AI outperforming humans in all tasks in 45 years and of automating all human jobs in 120 years, with Asian respondents expecting these dates much sooner than North Americans. These results will inform discussion amongst researchers and policymakers about anticipating and managing trends in AI.

Businesses hoping to survive over the long term will have to remake themselves into better competitors at least once along the way. These efforts have gone under many banners: total quality management, reengineering, rightsizing, restructuring, cultural change, and turnarounds, to name a few. In almost every case, the goal has been to cope with a new, more challenging market by changing the way business is conducted. A few of these endeavors have been very successful. A few have been utter failures. Most fall somewhere in between, with a distinct tilt toward the lower end of the scale. John P. Kotter is renowned for his work on leading organizational change. In 1995, when this article was first published, he had just completed a ten-year study of more than 100 companies that attempted such a transformation. Here he shares the results of his observations, outlining the eight largest errors that can doom these efforts and explaining the general lessons that encourage success. Unsuccessful transitions almost always founder during at least one of the following phases: generating a sense of urgency, establishing a powerful guiding coalition, developing a vision, communicating the vision clearly and often, removing obstacles, planning for and creating short-term wins, avoiding premature declarations of victory, and embedding changes in the corporate culture Realizing that change usually takes a long time, says Kotter, can improve the chances of success.
