How Does Explaining Content Through Videos Benefit Language Learners? Esp Students Tell us About it.

This work aims at analyzing English for Specific Purposes students´ perspectives towards the recording of videos as a mean to explain class content. Seventy-five students took part in the study. They recorded one video per week for over ten weeks. Those students who had recorded at least six videos were considered for the study. The participants completed a questionnaire that was composed of twenty-six Likert Scale items. In the questionnaire, students reported their level of agreement on the items. The data was analyzed by conducting a factorial analysis of main components with a Varimax rotation system. Participants´ perceptions were grouped in four factors which explain 63, 68% of the variance. The resulting factors show that by explaining content through videos the participants´ motivation and academic achievement have improved. The participants have developed personal self-regulated strategies, self-awareness of their learning progress, and environmental selfregulated strategies, indicating, from their perspectives, a positive impact of the strategy in their language learning progress.

This study aims to investigate the viewpoints of adult learners about the effects of the recorded motivational videos. The study was applied to twelve adult learners between the months of March and May in the spring semester of 2019, at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. As to the research design, explanatory mixed methods design was implemented. The online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were utilised as instruments. the present study follows a qualitative research approach that analyzes the perceptions of people linked to the different fields in the tourism sector of the province of El Oro in Ecuador. Currently, this province has professionals who lack a good level of English proficiency to provide foreigners with the best service. The researchers applied semi-structured interviews, capitalization of testimony, and focus group discussions to 15 participants associated with the different activities in the tourism area. The present study aimed to explore the needs and uses of the English language in the tourism and Hostelry sectors of "El Oro," the implications of having staff with good English language knowledge, and the impact of knowing English in the tourism sector. The results revealed that staff required having an appropriate level of English proficiency to make tourists feel comfortable during their stay. For this reason, knowing English has a positive impact in all the areas of the tourism sector. The researchers suggest further studies regarding the effectiveness of different strategies and techniques to develop English for Tourism Purposes (ETP) at the university level and examine the impact of knowing English in the different fields of the tourism sector.

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of self-regulation on EFL learners' reading comprehension. To fulfill the purpose of this study, 149 Iranian EFL language learners studying at Islamic Azad Universities of Qazvin and Tehran (North, and Science and Research branches) were selected from a total number of 200 based on their performance on TOEFL PBT test and randomly put into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received direct teaching along with task-based instruction on self-regulation in reading in ten sessions. The tasks/activities were designed based on self-regulation strategies proposed by Zimmerman (1989). The results showed the rejection of the null hypothesis, thus concluding that self-regulation has a significant effect on reading comprehension of Iranian EFL learners. This investigation has some implications for language programs for ESP/EAP purposes in Iran.

Self-regulated learning strategies have recently received a remarkable attention by researchers. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and students' language proficiency as well as their reading comprehension. To do so, 115 Iranian EFL university students were selected. First, a TOEFL test was given to the participants so as to determine their language proficiency and reading comprehension. Then, they were asked to fill out Self-Regulated Learning Strategies Questionnaire (Al Asmari & Mahmoud Ismail, 2012). To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were conducted. The results revealed that there is a significant relationship between the students' use of self-regulated learning strategies and their language proficiency. Also, a significant relationship between the students' use of self-regulated learning strategies and their reading comprehension was found. Finally, the pedagogical message of this study is that teachers and students should incorporate self-regulated learning strategies into their teaching and learning process.

This paper describes a video-making project in which twenty-four Russian language students at a Malaysian university made their own digital videos in Russian. The article argues that the activity supports a construc-tivist perspective on education, based on such tenets as the active construction of knowledge by learners, the social nature of learning, the authenticity of the learning situation, and the ability of students to determine their own learning goals. This study describes stages in the video project implementation, gives a brief over-view of two student-produced videos, and reports the learners’ opinions about the activity. The students’ per-ceptions of the video project reflected the four constructivist assumptions adopted in this study. The paper concludes that involving language learners in video projects is conducive to the application of constructivist principles in the foreign language classroom and that the activity enhances the pedagogical effectiveness of language teaching.

In this paper we propose appropriation as the key for the recognition of mobile devices as well as the artefacts accessed through, and produced with them as cultural resources in and across different cultural practices of use, in particular everyday life and formal education. We analyse the interrelationship of mobile device users with the structures, agency and practices of, and in relation to, what we call the 'mobile complex'. We do so on the basis of two examples, located in socialisation and ‘off-site’ learning, and we propose curricular options for the assimilation of mobile devices into settings of formal learning. We also present a typology of appropriation that seeks to serve as an explanatory, analytical frame as well as a starting point for discussion about related issues. This chapter presents a typology of four dimensions of teacher leadership-a disposition to continually learn from and improve practice, collaboration with peers through critical examination and evolution of each other&s teaching, participation in geographically diverse communities of practice, and making professional contributions through speaking, writing, and teaching. Teacher leadership, from this perspective, is inherently grounded in professional engagement, which in turn is linked with constructivist teaching philosophies and teaching practice and exemplary use of computers. The chapter then summarizes several studies of leadership among technology-expert teachers and applies the more general leadership typology to the specific domain of information and communication technologies-adaptive expertise with respect to technology tools and resources; collaboration around technology; interpersonal networking in technology-active communities; and contributions through organizations to share knowledge about how technology is best used in teaching. The chapter concludes by pointing to several ways that technology leadership might be fostered.

Information technology has opened up prospects for rich and innovative approaches to tackle educational issues and provide solutions to the increasing demands for learning resources. YouTube, a video-sharing website that allows users to upload, view, and share video clips, offers access to new and dynamic opportunities for effective and non-traditional patterns of teaching and learning. In Saudi Arabia, this technology has not been exploited much for educational purposes. The present study aims at experimenting the impact of integrating YouTube technology into English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction on enhancing EFL college students learning of the content of the course: Observation in Schools 2. This course is one of five courses taught in the program Elementary School Teacher of English which aims at developing certain observation skills for effective teaching in elementary school. Such skills could include using particular frames or lenses to gain insight about the classroom and teaching and learning, and developing methods of observing and recording. For the purpose of the study, a quasi experimental design was adopted. Based on such design, two groups of second year college students at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Faculty of Education at Princess Noura University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were randomly assigned to the experimental and the control groups of the study. There were forty- five students in the control group and fifty-one in the experimental group. A pre-posttest covering the theoretical background of the course "Observation in School 2" was developed to be administered to all subjects of the sample before and after the experiment. Subjects of the experimental group were instructed the theoretical background of the course through the use of YouTube videos about observing the classroom, combined with discussion and power point presentation. Students of the control group were taught the same content through the usual lecture-based method. Instruction was provided to both groups by the researcher and took place throughout the second term of the academic year in 2011 for a period of 6 weeks, 2 hours per week. Statistical procedures were applied on the data obtained using a t-test, and major findings yielded results favourable to the use of the YouTube technology. The study shows positive gains for the experimental group students outcomes as a result of the integration of video technology in instruction. Thus, it was recommended that YouTube should be considered as an effective instructional tool for enhancing content learning of EFL college students and as an important teaching resource in classrooms.

The Internet has the potential to provide language learners with vast resources of authentic written, audio, and video materials to supplement lessons. Educators can find a wide assortment of materials for learners to study in class or after class for independent learning and to encourage learner autonomy. More recently, however, the immense popularity of social networking websites has created new opportunities for language learners to interact in authentic ways that were previously difficult to achieve. Advances in technology mean that today, learners of a language can easily interact with their peers in meaningful practice that helps foster language acquisition and motivation. That is, tasks that make use of Web 2.0 interactivity can significantly raise students'. potential to generate meaningful output and stimulate their interest in language learning.

The Web 2.0 site YouTube.com was examined with respect to how it affords authentic, student-centered instruction in English as a second or foreign language classrooms. A review of literature showed that there has been empirical and action research studies on the use of YouTube in both ESL and EFL contexts. YouTube has been shown to be a tool that facilitates language learning and teaching and confidence building, as well as affords authentic, student-centered activities with increased participation. With this said, some potential limitations of the use of YouTube and other Web 2.0 tools, such as student privacy and inappropriate material, is discussed. Finally, the paper concludes with sample lessons that demonstrate how YouTube can be used as a tool to produce an authentic, student-centered project.

Immersion language teaching has developed techniques that enable teachers to make their subject matter, through a second language, more comprehensible. It is argued in this article that EFL teachers can also use techniques used by immersion language teachers in their classrooms. In doing so, teachers will increase the amount of input in the SL provided to their students, make their classroom rich with comprehensible input and thus potentially achieve a better language outcome. The techniques that are briefly discussed and examples provided are: Questioning downward, rephrasing, recasts, modelling or demonstrating, and the use of visuals and realia.
