Translation of Irony in the Hungarian Subtitles of Downton Abbey

This paper proposes to analyse ironic utterances in the British TV series Downton Abbey (Season One) by comparing the English source text (ST) irony found in the script of the film to its subtitled variant of the Hungarian target text (TT). Accessible video game localization: The didactics of a comprehensive approach

The main objective of this contribution is to develop a methodology for AVT teaching within the context of SDH for Interactive Enternainment Software (video games) with Social Constructivism as a theoretical and methodological foundation for translation training. The methodology consists of using video game Closed Captioning (Game CC) as a comprehensive approach to translation training which ... [Show full abstract] integrates interlinguistic and intralingual subtitling, accessibility and video games. Selected clips from video games are the basis for developing accessible translation activities, which are implemented through a specialized software (AcceEdu) and an elearning station (Moodle) for multimedia exercise design and practice. A pilot training module for video Game CC consisting of a set of five activities has been designed for this purpose. Subtitling has been successfully applied to foreign language acquisition (see e.g. http://levis.cti.gr/) and audiovisual translation training (Diaz Cintas 2008). However, what distinguishes this methodology from previous ones is the use of video games as working text instead of the commonly used filmic types (movies, TV series, and commercials). The election of this original type of audiovisual text is made on the grounds of its didactic utility and the specific features of its interactivity, which make it especially appealing from a didactic perspective, as well as a complex translation modality from the point of view of the translation process. Our expectation is that this paper would help to reinforce the professionalization of such translator profiles as video game translator and accessible translator by means of integrating this type of course into the translation classroom in tertiary education institutions. This effort should also lead to develop specific translation competences relating to game CC and raise awareness of the important role of translation in accessibility to multimedia texts.
