This paper deals with the Microlepidoptera fauna of Bahçesaray district of Van Province (East
Turkey). Totally 96 species of 16 families (Adelidae, Alucitidae, Autostichidae, Brachodidae,
Coleophoridae, Cosmopterigidae, Ethmiidae, Gelechiidae, Gracillariidae, Lecithoceridae,
Oecophoridae, Pterophoridae, Scythridae, Tineidae, Tortricidae, Yponomeutidae) are given.
Taxonomically, A new subgenus, Neocallima in the family Oecophoridae is established. A new
subspecies, Anchinia cristalis ssp. mukusensis is described. Two species are reported here as new to
the fauna of Turkey. Totally 49 species are new to the fauna of Van Province. The identity of Aroga
velocella was opened to discussion. Various remarks to some species are also added.
Key words: Microlepidoptera, fauna, Lepidoptera, Adelidae, Alucitidae, Autostichidae,

The first investigations on the Lepidoptera fauna of the district Bahçesaray (Van Province)
were realized by the authors, during their field studies in 2016, with the following comprehensive
publications on the groups, Noctuidae, Geometridae, Macro-Heterocera, and Pyralidae,
respectively (Kemal & Koçak, 2016a-c, 2017a). Besides, several new taxa of the families, Pyralidae
and Tortricidae from Bahçesaray have been published (Kemal & Koçak, 2017a-b). Faunistically,
432 species of the Lepidoptera have been listed from Bahçesaray, so far. This number reached 529
with the present study.
In the present paper, some of the Microlepidoptera species of 16 families, obtained during
the authors’ field studies in the last year, are listed and discussed in various topics. These families,
together with the numbers of species, represented in Bahçesaray, are as follows: Adelidae (1),
Alucitidae, Autostichidae (2), Brachodidae (1), Coleophoridae (12), Cosmopterigidae (1),
Ethmiidae (4), Gelechiidae (13), Gracillariidae (2), Lecithoceridae (1), Oecophoridae (7),
Pterophoridae (13), Scythridae (2), Tineidae (2), Tortricidae (32), Yponomeutidae (3).
Taxonomically, a new subgenus, Neocallima n. subgen., and a new subspecies, Anchinia
cristalis mukusensis n. ssp. are described.
Faunistically, 3 species are reported here as new to the fauna of Turkey. Totally 49 species
are new to the fauna of Van Province. Besides, the necessary genitalic slides are prepared for the
purpose of identifications of the species, and illustrated here. All the specimens were identified by
the authors and preserved in the Biorepository CESA.2

The genus is currently represented by 5 species in Turkey. These are: aristotelis,
kurdistana, flavicomella, pascuicola, and velocella. Externally this species looks like to velosella to
some degree. After comparing the male genitalia, illustrated by Huemer & Karsholt (1999: 259,
fig.121), some deviations are seen, i.e., less curved valva, shorter terminal spine of valva, more
slender, etc. These cases can be discussed.
Material studied: 1. East Turkey, Van Province, Bahçesaray, Paşaköy 1600m 4 8 2016,

This species is new to the fauna of Turkey. We used the Lvovsky’s publication (1981) for the
specific identity. However, the population of Bahçesaray is different from the nominate subspecies
externally, i.e., colouration and markings of the wings. These features are constant in the series
collected. Therefore, we propose here a new subspecies mukusensis ssp. nov., representing
Anchinia cristalis in East Turkey.

This species was described by Amsel from Israel, with the name combination
Borkhausenia einsleri”. Lvovsky, et al. (2016) reported this species from Israel only, with the hope
of endemism to the Levant. The authors collected a single specimen from Şirvan (Siirt Province) in
2013, and a pair from Bahçesaray (Van Province) in 2016. According to the present knowledge, the
species is known from Israel and South East Turkey, from sea level to 1600m in the mountains.
As to the generic classification of the species einsleri Amsel, Lvovsky, et al. (2016) placed
this species in the genus Epicallima Dyar,1903 (type-species: Callima argenticinctella
Clemens,1860). In his re-description of the type-species of Epicallima, Clarke (1941: 256) stated:
Male genitalia. – Harpe elongate, slender; cucullus bluntly pointed; sacculus broad with a
terminal curved projection extending beyond cucullus. Anellus a more or less rectangular
sclerotized plate with widely separated lateral processes; the processes twice the length of the
central plate. Aedeagus stout, slightly narrower at the middle than at the extremities; distal end
terminating in a sharp, thornlike point; vesica armed with one long straight cornutus. Gnathos
drawn out into a blunt point medially. Female genitalia.— Genital plate broad, moderately
sclerotized. Ostium large, oval. Ductus bursae strongly sclerotized in posterior half and armed with
12-18 strong teeth inwardly. Signum a small, strongly sclerotized toothed plate.”
Clarke included two species, argenticinctella and formosella to Epicallima, both of them
looks like very much to each other externally.
Borkhausenia einsleri” combination, originally proposed by Amsel, is unacceptable today.
Lvovsky’s proposal is based upon the following criteria – seems not so strong: “its large labial
palpi and long aedeagus in males and its ductus bursae with sclerotization in female”.
Taking also the external features of einsleri into consideration, einsleri and
argenticinctella, the type-species of Epicallima, we propose here a distinct, new subgenus in the
following way:
Neocallima subgen. nov. (Figs. 61-67)
http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:56B7A592-0CFA-41F1-AF6F-C02551356E74
Type-species: Borkhausenia einsleri Amsel,1935, here designated.
Diagnosis: The male genitalia in einsleri is completely different in shape from that of
argenticinctella, i.e., valva, saccus, uncus, gnathos, aedeagus and anellus. In the female genitalia,
there is no teeth inside of ductus bursae; upper half of bursa copulatrix and ductus bursae heavily
sclerotized (Fig. 63). Sexual dimorphism not remarkable. Female slightly larger than male (Fig.
61). Body and wing colouration of both sexes dark brown. Forewing with three triangular creamy-
yellowish markings, basal one largest, while subapical and subtornal ones rather similar in size and

shape to each other. Top of head with well-developed white scales (Fig.62). Antenna white and
black, apparently chequered (Figs. 61, 65).
The genus Epicallima Dyar is still represented in Europe, by the following species:
formosella Denis & Schiff., bruandella Rag., icterinella Mnn., and mercedella Stgr. However,
einsleri Ams. differs, among them, at a remarkable level at first sight. Even the genitalic structures
support this view. Male and female uppersides, female head, male and female genitalia and their
abdominal skins are illustrated below (Figs. 61-67).

Remarks: The names of this taxon like “strigana Haworth” and politana Guenée” proposed
in the past are invalid as they are junior homonyms. McDunnough (1935) described a male from
Comox, Vancouver Island in British Colombia (Canada) as “Dichrorampha vancouverana”, which
is currently valid name of the taxon under discussion. Razowski (2003) omitted this name and
used gueneeana Obraztsov,1953 as a valid name for the species. This species was recently reported
by the authors from Saklıvadi (Van Prov.) and illustrated its male genitalia (Kemal & Koçak,
2017e). The species can be easily identified by its unique shape of the male genitalia and the
colouration of the forewing. It is also common in Bahçesaray district.
