Developing the Conceptual Model for Environmental Education Expansion by Evaluation of Strategic Parameters

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

With the appearance of the new paradigm for development in the seventies, numerous regional and international agreements were signed in the world to protect the environment. In the meantime high emphasis has also been put on the need for creating and maintaining an educational system aimed at changing the public behavior and attitude towards the environment as the first step towards sustainable development. The objective of this research is to present a conceptual model for developing the national environmental education by evaluation of the strategic parameters. The research tool was a questionnaire and the validity of the indicators was realized by obtaining the opinions of the relevant professionals and experts, while their credibility was computed as equivalent to 0.95 using the Cronbach’s alpha formulae. In this research, following a review of the different international views, the results of global conferences, library study, review of documents as well as interviews with environmental experts, a questionnaire was also prepared in the frame of SWOT table and presented to 50 environmental pundits and experts to allocate weight. The findings show that the total weighted score was 2.73 in the matrix of internal parameters and 2.61 in the matrix of external parameters. These scores are above the average of 2.5, signifying that the strengths and opportunities in the development of environmental Education dominated the weaknesses and threats, and the type of resulting strategy was aggressive. In the end, a conceptual model based on all parameters was prepared and proposed for the development of environmental Education.

The environmental education is a crossing formative process of high relevance in the world educational system, above all in the Cuban University teaching. In the Sport and Physical Activity field, there have been proposals of dimensions and indicators to evaluate the impact of this process. However, despite its great importance, there is no uniform proposal to be followed by most of researches in the area. The objective of this paper was to propose a set of indicators to evaluate the environmental education in undergraduate university students majoring at physical activity and sports, based on a more integrated conception. In order to establish these indicators the author made use of empiric scientific methods such as: the documentary review, the observation and the survey. These indicators revealed insufficiencies in the students ‘environmental education and showed the way for its gradual solution.

Background and Aim: Educating environmental Character influenced by environmental ethics targets attitude and behavior of the people, pragmatically, in a way that even the law may be affected by its lobbying. Thus, present study aimed to explain the determinants of environmental character education. Materials and Methods: In this qualitative study, main key words were searched in the internal and foreign databases for the purpose of obtaining the themes and determinants of environmental character education. Then, the content analysis of 45 research documents retrieved with a deductive approach was carried out. For this purpose, firstly, the determinants of character education and, in particular, environmental education, were extracted based on the view of each researcher. In the next step, the frequency of the determinants was calculated by SPSS software. Then, the conceptual model of the research was drawn up using the Nvivo software 10. Findings: The total number of determinants of the 45 environmental character education identified by researchers was 60 items. Some of the determinants were emphasized only by one researcher, such as: nature sanctity, strength, leadership skills, religiousness, identification, obedience, and intelligence. The most important determinants identified were respect (48.9%), fairness (42.2%), honesty (35.6%), compassion (33.4%), responsibility (33.4%), perseverance (26.7%), care (24.4%) and discipline (22.2%), empathy (20%), patience (20%). Conclusion: Changing our attitude to the environment, from commodity view to social view will change our behavior. Our model shows that Character Education founds a variety of positive attitudes and behaviors in favor of environment which ensure human well-being in life cycle.

The contribution of protected areas towards conservation and protection of biodiversity cannot be over emphasized. Likewise, the dependence of local communities on forest and natural resources cannot be overlooked. Hence for the long term viability of forest reserves and wildlife protected area, the relationship of local people living close to these areas are of key importance if conflict of use can be mitigated. Admittedly, decision-making with respect to forest resource use and protection are complex due to the multiple interests of the major stakeholders. Stakeholder involvement in the planning, management and policy analysis can help resolve conflicts, and increase the commitment of local people to support conservation of protected areas. In this paper, we employ the SWOT-AHP methodology, with the aid of the Priority Estimation Tool (PriEsT), to evaluate and prioritize three management strategies for the Kakum conservation area in Ghana, as a means to facilitate conservation while ensuring benefits to local people. Considering the management objectives of the conservation area, seventeen SWOT sub-factors were identified and used in rating the three alternative management strategies. Among the strength sub-factors, enforcement of protection regulations (S4) is the most important. Similarly, limited funds for patrolling and outreach programs (W3), local people's interest in alternative livelihood (O4) and the presence of illegal activities (T3) are the most important weakness, opportunity and threat sub-factors respectively. The management strategy " institute village committees to support monitoring and protection of resources " (A1) has the highest priority rating, indicating that management authorities must pay more attention to collaborative management. We propose that to improve on protected area management in Ghana, more management strategy studies must be conducted. However, these studies may apply the fuzzy AHP technique since it is supposed to have a better capacity to handle uncertainties in human judgments during decision-making.

In recent years, many environmental problems have become important factors in promoting the economic need to develop tourist activity: climate change such as energy wars, increasing hunger and aridity, population increases in urban areas, excessive and unthinking use of natural resources, difficult international relations, economic competition, and increasing environmental stress. Trends in global tourism have changed with changes in culture and our attitude to nature. Changes in both the profile and consumption patterns of tourists have called for the need to balance the use of natural and cultural assets with the need to adequately protect them. In this study, the Sarikum Nature Protection Area (SNPA) was selected as a case study because of its significance as a Turkish wetland area and the variety of different ecosystems coexisting within it. The study focussed on management strategies, but also provides a broader strategy for an area that currently has no management plan. Strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analyses of the area were gathered and analyzed using R'WOT analysis (ranking + SWOT), a multi-criteria assessment method, in order to determine strategies, obtain the participation of interest groups, and assess their opinions and attitudes. The analysis showed the following: the rich biological diversity and the existence of endemic species were the reserve's most significant strength; the presence of natural areas in surrounding regions was the most significant opportunity; the shortage of infrastructure and lack of legal regulation of ecotourism was the most significant weakness; and the lack of a management plan was the most immediate threat.

The objective of this study is to analyze the working potential of Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (ENGOs) in Punjab, Pakistan. Semi-structured questionnaire was designed to fulfill the rationale of the study. The potential of working of ENGO is based on the various factors such as financial support, acceptability by the local community, qualification of the staff and social threats while working. Descriptive analysis and Pearson Chi-Square were applied on the collected data to find out the percentage and association. The results showed that operative structure of 65.4% of the ENGOs is volunteer based. Only 42.3% of ENGOs are working on the environmental issues while, others have mixed working scope and vision. There is a lack of auditing system to check the efficient utilization of the resources. A mechanism of self-reporting has been developed by the ENGOs to report to their donors. There is a strong relationship between the number of the staff, age and the strength of the ENGO. It was also found that ENGOs working in Punjab, Pakistan are not being effected by the political parties and having minor social threats. The analysis also showed that the working ENGOs lack the funding which immobilizes them to work efficiently. Many ENGOs have stopped working but their names are still present in the list of the registered ENGOs. There is vital need to update list of ENGOs by concerned departments and to properly mechanize the system of monitoring and auditing.

Environmental education is essential to the success of Agenda 21. Yet currently it is without focus and effectively side-lined. This paper supplies a strategy and accompanying methodology for establishing environmental education as a major force for implementing Agenda 21. The author proposes the establishment of an Education 21 programme and the designation of the educational community as a new Rio major group. Recommendations are made to appropriate competent bodies.
