Abstract Earlier records of deep sea rock shrimp Sicyonia parajaponica are from off Chennai, northern part of southeast coast and
off Kollam, southwest coast of India. The present report of Sicyonia parajaponica off Thoothukudi waters in Gulf of Mannar extends
its distribution further south along southeast coast. It occurred at a depth of 310 m. It has been reported from Gulf of Aden, Phuket in
the Andaman Sea, the Philippines, Australia, China and Taiwan.
Keywords Sicyonia parajaponica; Sicyoniidae; Thoothukudi coast; Gulf of Mannar
1 Introduction
Genus Sicyonia H. Milne Edwards (1830) has wide distribution in Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and
Mediterranean Sea and contains 52 species (De Grave and Fransen, 2011), of which, four species, namely,
Sicyonia fallax (De Man, 1907), S. lancifer (Olivier, 1811), S. longicauda (Rathbun 1906) and S. parjaponica
(Crosnier, 2003) were reported from Indian waters (Kurian, 1953; George, 1966; Muthu, 1968, Kathirvel et al.,
2007; Thirumilu, 2011; Radhakrishnan et al., 2012; Shanis et al., 2013; Chakraborty, 2017). While observing the
deep sea catch landed at Thoothukudi, one specimen belonged to Sicyonia parajaponica was obtained and its
record from Gulf of Mannar is reported here.
2 Material Examined
Every year, the deep sea fishing in Gulf of Mannar is confined to 4 months, from December to March. A single
male specimen measuring 107 mm in total length, 18 mm in carapace length and weighing 15 g was found among
the deep sea fish and crustaceans landed at Thoothukudi Fisheries harbour in March 2016. S. parajaponica the
single specimen was collected from Thoothukudi fishing harbor, India, between 08° 52’12.1”N 78° 47’ 34.7”E. It
was learnt that the deep sea trawling took place off Thoothukudi at a depth of 310 m, where the sea bottom was
sandy with broken molluscan shells.

5 Remarks
In general, the present material agrees with the description given by Crosnier (2003) and Shanis et al. (2013). The
important characters observed are 1) both carapace and body robust, covered with scattered tubercles, their tip
marked with red dot, 2) rostral tip bidentate, 3) 5 rostral teeth behind hepatic spine as observed by Crosnier (2003),
Thirumilu (2011) and Shanis et al. (2013) a round red spot with white border near the posterior margin of
carapace.
6 Distribution
India: West coast: off Kollam (Shanis et al., 2013); East coast: off Chennai (Thirumilu, 2011). The present record
from off Thoothukudi, Gulf of Mannar is still further south along the southeast coast of India.
Indo-Pacific: Gulf of Aden, off Phuket in Andaman Sea, the Philippines, China, Taiwan and Australia (Crosnier,
2003).
