The Poetics of kalos thanatos in Euripides' Hecuba: Masculine and Feminine Motifs in Polyxena's Death

Abstract

This paper reads Polyxena's death in Hecuba via a different lens and uncovers hidden aspects of Euripides' technique in configuring her death as a heroic act. It argues that her death is a reshaped version of kalos thanatos, with a binary, masculine and feminine, quality. In this framework a series of traditional, mainly epic and elegiac, motifs are employed (heroism, athletic victory, beauty, marriage) with multiple effects on Polyxena's sacrifice. In conclusion, this article explores the implications of Polyxena's death in the larger narrative of Hecuba.

The relationship between Punchdrunk’s masked performances and their source texts divides opinion, as the company’s predominantly dance-based language and their approach of abstracting their source texts renders the connection between source text and target artefact opaque. In this chapter, which is the second of the two rehearsal studies contained in this volume, I consider how Punchdrunk engaged with Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Euripides’ Hecuba in rehearsal. My analysis of the rehearsing of four specific moments of The Burnt City, namely the sacrifice of Polyxena, the emerging relationship between Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, the production’s finale, and the meeting between Clytemnestra and Agamemnon (the so-called carpet scene), reveals that a rigorous investigation into text underpinned The Burnt City. In each phase of rehearsal, the company entered into a dialogue with their source texts, responding to the particular narrative beats, emotional and psychological dynamics, and the linguistic colour of the two Greek tragedies. I argue that Punchdrunk’s handling of their tragic texts is consequently a form of intermedial or intersemiotic translation. Although the representation of classical literature in The Burnt City may continue to split critical opinion, when the process behind the company’s eventual product is understood then there can be no question about the level of interrogation underpinning the work.

The Trojan War or, more precisely, the sacking of Troy, plays an important role in the Roman cultural imagination and the crucial text dealing with these events, Vergil’s Aeneid II, has been used by various authors in various literary genres in order to build associations between their own subject matter and the fates of Priam, Hecuba, Aeneas etc. Thus, for example, the death of Agamemnon in Seneca’s tragedy of the same title bears a similarity to the death of Priam in the Aeneid; the two narratives are examined in the first part of the paper. In the main part of the paper, we move from Seneca to Tacitus; here, after a brief consideration of a passage from the account of the death of Galba (Hist. I 41, 3), there is a detailed discussion of one chapter from the end of Book III of the Histories (84). The chapter describes the Vitellian soldiers’ last stand against the Flavian army in Rome on December 20, AD 69 and Emperor Vitellius’ pathetic demise. The paper’s particular focus is on intertextual references which, so it seems, are introduced by Tacitus into his narrative to make his account of the last stage of the Roman Civil War of AD 68/69 more graphic and memorable; importantly, most of these references evoke the Trojan War and its aftermath. In particular, the following passages are analysed: (1) Tac. Hist. III 84, 2 ~ Verg. Aen. II 501–502; (2) Tac. Hist. III 84, 3 ~ Sall. Cat. 52, 3 + Eur. Hec. 568–570 (cf. Ov. Met. XIII 879–880; Fast. Pindar and the Cult of Heroes combines a study of Greek culture and religion (hero cult) with a literary-critical study of Pindar's epinician poetry. It looks at hero cult generally, but focuses especially on heroization in the 5th century BC. There are individual chapters on the heroization of war dead, of athletes, and on the religious treatment of the living in the 5th century. Hero cult, Bruno Currie argues, could be anticipated, in different ways, in a person's lifetime. Epinician poetry too should be interpreted in the light of this cultural context; fundamentally, this genre explores the patron's religious status. The book features extensive studies of Pindar's Pythians 2, 3, 5, Isthmian 7, and Nemean 7.

In this collection of new essays, an international group of experts explores the significance of reciprocity (the principle and practice of voluntary requital, of benefit for benefit or harm for harm) in ancient Greek culture. Reciprocity has been seen as an important notion for anthropologists studying economic and social relations. A key question has been whether reciprocity constitutes an alternative pattern to the commercial, political, and ethical relationships characteristic of modern Western society. This volume takes the question forward in connection with Greek culture from Homer to the Hellenistic period. The Greeks discovered the individual, it is said, but in what sense is this true? Characters in Greek literature may often seem strangely different from their modern counterparts: less idiosyncratic, less real, and with less psychological depth or interest. Personality traits seems to cluster more predictably in the characters of Greek authors than of those today. Despite the wide-ranging scope of this aspect of Greek literature, most previous discussions on Greek characterization and individuality have been limited to particular authors or genres. Sir Hugh Lloyd-Jones was Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University from 1960 to 1989. A scholar of commanding intelligence and learning, he has made important contributions to our knowledge of ancient Greece across the full range from textual analysis to Greek religion and the classical tradition. In September 1997 a group of his friends, mostly former pupils and established scholars themselves, gathered to celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday and to offer him a set of papers on Sophocles, an author especially close to his heart. This volume collects those papers, which give very varied approaches to the poet, his work, and his influence. Professor Bernard Knox contributes a portrait of Sir Hugh as a scholar and a man as an introduction to the volume.
