Colonic transit time in patient with slow-transit constipation: Comparison of radiopaque markers and...

[Show full abstract] female patients with slow-transit constipation using both radiopaque markers and barium suspension method. In radiopaque markers method, the patient ingested 20 markers on the first day, and an abdominal radiograph was performed every 24h until 80% markers were excreted. In barium suspension method, the patient swallowed up to 50 ml of 200% (w/v) barium meal. The abdominal radiographs were taken at the same time point as the former. The total or segmental colonic transit time were obviously prolonged in all patients. Segmental transits time spent in the right colon, left colon and rectosigmoid for radiopaque markers and barium suspension method was, respectively, 30 ± 6 h and 34 ± 7 h; 38 ± 9h and 32 ± 6 h; 40 ± 8 h and 38 ± 10 h. In the radiopaque markers method, total colonic transit time was 108 ± 14 h and it was 103 ± 13 h in the barium suspension method (P>0.05). The barium suspension and radiopaque markers gave the similar results for colonic transit time. The barium suspension was a simple and cheap method for evaluating the colonic mobility.

Influence of radiologist grade on fluoroscopic patient dose

The effect of radiologist grade on patient dose during fluoroscopic barium studies was assessed over a one-year period in a large teaching hospital using area-kerma measurements made with a Diamentor M2 system. For all barium studies there was a trend for both the screening time and the patient dose to fall to a minimum for the grades third-year registrar/first-year senior registrar. From this group to consultant level the dose and screening time rose.

Estimation of effective dose and radiation risk in pediatric barium studies procedures

The objectives of this study are to assess pediatric radiation exposure in certain barium studies and to quantify the organ and effective doses and radiation risk resultant from patients' irradiation. [Show full abstract] and DosCal software. Organ and effective doses (E) were extrapolated using national Radiological Protection Board software (NRPB-R279). The mean ± (SD) and the range of patient doses per procedure were 3.7±0.4 (1.0–13.0) mGy, 7.4±1.7(5.5–8.0) mGy and 1.4±0.9 (0.5–3.6) mGy for barium meal, swallow and enema, respectively. The mean effective doses were 0.3±0.03(0.08–1.1) mSv, 0.2±1.6( 0.44–0.7) mSv and 0.3±0.9(0.1- 0.8) mSv at the same order. The radiation dose were higher compared to previous studies. Therefore, pediatrics are exposed to avoidable radiation exposure. Certain optimization measures are recommended along with establishing national diagnostic reference level (DRL) to reduce the radiation risk.
