This paper presents the invasive alien plant species in the Polog region, North Macedonia. As a result of the floristic research of this area, during the period 2021-2023 and based on the preliminary data of local and foreign botanists, 12 invasive alien plant species have been found, 7 of which belong to the Asteraceae family, while the other species belong to the following families: Solanaceae, Fabaceae, Amaranthaceae, Anacardiaceae and Poaceae. Excepting the species Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers., native to northeast Africa (and, probably, western and central Asia), all the other invasive plant species identified in the study region are of American origin (North, Central and South America). The alien invasive species identified in the Polog region belong to three life forms, where Therophytes (T) predominate (66.66%) among the identified species, while Geophytes (G) and Phanerophytes (P) represent only 16.67% each.

The author's further study of Hieracium s.str. (Asteraceae) revealed some additional new data and confirmations regarding the diversity and chorology of this genus in North Macedonia. This paper deals with six species of which two are reported for the first time in the country-Hieracium macropannosum, found near Delčevo (Dzvegor village), and Hieracium oxyodon, found in Šar Mountains (Plat, Brezno village). The present occurrence of the following three species in the country, reported in the literature from a single locality 85 years ago or earlier, is confirmed by their records in one or more additional locations: Hieracium lachenalii, Hieracium prenanthoides, and Hieracium pseudofastigiatum. Hieracium glabratum, collected in the country only once in 1918, in Šar Mountains (Ljuboten), is confirmed in the same locality. A photograph of a herbarium or live specimen, along with a map of its distribution in the country, is given for each presented taxa.
... During the survey, the longitude, latitude and altitude of each site were recorded using OruxMaps (www.oruxmaps.com). The data on the geographical distribution of the two species in N. Macedonia are based on information from the Macedonian National Herbarium (MKNH) at the Institute of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, and on literature data, e.g. from scientific papers (Košanin 1911a(Košanin , 1911bTan, Stevanović & Vold 1998;Stevanović & Tan 2000;Mandžukovski 2009;Levkov et al. 2010;Teofilovski 2011;Matevski 2013) and Flora of the Republic of Macedonia (Micevski 1995;Matevski 2021), while the data from own researches were also considered. FOREWORD The second volume of the edition The Flora of the Republic of Macedonia is planned to encompass 4-5 books in which the families of the class Dicotyledonae, belonging to the group Sympetalae, will be elaborated. This method of grouping of the families into separate volumes is in accordance with the concept of August Hayek which is presented in his capital work on the flora of the Balkan Peninsula – Prodromus florae peninsulae Balcanicae I-III (1924/33), while the systematic ordering of the families is made according to Flora Europaea, but with certain small modifications due to practical reasons. A part of the families which belong to the group of Sympetalae (Plumba- ginaceae, Ericaceae, Pyrolaceae, Monotropaceae, Empetraceae, Primulaceae) has already been elaborated in some of the previously published books of the first volume of this edition. This is due to their different systematic affiliation to specific higher systematic categories within the frames of the phylogenetic system of vascular plants. The concept of the first volume which was established by Academician Kiril Micevski considering the method of presentation of the families, genera, species and the lower taxons – subspecies, varieties, subvarieties and forms – is completely respected in their further elaboration in this book, and will continue to be respected in the subsequent books, introducing only slight changes. These changes should contribute to better clearness of the text content, as well as to more precise information regarding the authors who explored the families, genera and species, and the collectors (legators) of the herbarium materials. Thus, a survey of the elaborated families, genera and species will be given in a content-like form at the beginning of each book; and an alphabetical index and a list of authors participating will be supplemented at the end of the book. After every cited data about the presence of a specific taxon, on a specific part of the territory of the Republic of Macedonia, which is documented by herbarium materials, the abbre- viation of the name and the surname of the collector of the respective herbal material will be given in brackets. On this occasion I would like to express my gratitude to the Academicians Georgi Filipovski and Risto Lozanovski for their immense trust and support during the realization of this project which was conducted within the Department of Biolo- gical and Medical Sciences of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and which has resulted in the preparation of the first book of the second volume of the edition The Flora of the Republic of Macedonia. This second volume completes a project, begun by Cambridge University Press, to produce an up-to-date detailed Greek flora. A team of 25 botanists from several European countries catalogue the flora and endemic species found in the Greek mountain region. Each entry gives name and bibliography reference, synonomy, a description of the species, notes on nomenclature and typification, ecology and flowering time, distribution, chromosome number and special features.
