Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data used to estimate the health of green vegetation and post processed high definition images for precision agriculture. Drone provide high-resolution image taken of crops, it compares the reflected intensities of near infrared (NIR) and visible light. Autonomous aircrafts are improved and cost effective instruments for data acquisition, real-time thermal imagery to the ground control station (GCS), and fastest medium for quick time and critical analysis of the crop. The paper represents an alternative and cheaper methodology to estimate the growing crop health and stress by acquisition of data using drone with modified airborne cameras and sensors. Abstract—Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data

INTRODUCTION
Drones can fly autonomously with dedicated software which
allows to make a flight plan and deploy the system with GPS
and feed in various parameters such as speed, altitude, ROI
(Region of Interest), geo-fence and fail-safe modes. Drones
are preferred over full size aircrafts due to major factors like
combination of high spatial resolution and fast turnaround
capabilities together with low operation cost and easy to
trigger. These features are required in precision agriculture
where large areas are monitored and analyses are carried out
in minimum time. Using of aerial vehicle is possible due to
miniaturization of compact cameras and other sensors like
infrared and sonar.
2.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
2.1 Aerial Platform
Quad-rotor helicopter of 700mm diameter (see Fig. 1). This
vehicle is capable of carrying 1kg payload with endurance of
35mins flight at top speed of 25Knots. The major advantage of
this equipment is its vertical takeoff and landing capabilities
and can operate from very confined places. This aircraft is
automated using Arduino open source development board and
an open source software (PIX4D) is used to plan the flight
path (waypoints, altitude, heading direction & speed). User
interface is simplified in such a way that anyone with two
hours of training can operate this instrument and render useful
information.

2.2 Image Sensor
Commercially available cameras are small enough to fly on a
drone platform and record in NIR, they are both expensive and
low in resolution. This hurdle can be taken as an affront and
the solution is to modify a canon SX220 camera into NDVI
camera with very minimal modifications the output was a high
resolution camera which could observe NIR at a reasonable
cost.

Standard digital cameras capture RGB red, green and blue
light. Modified cameras (see Fig. 2(a.)) captures the
combination of near infrared, red, green and blue light (see
Fig. 2(b.)). Removing infrared filter allows camera to capture
near infrared image NIR (see Fig. 2(c.)). Normalization
difference vegetation index is a simple metric which indicates
the health of green vegetation. The basic theory is chlorophyll
strongly reflects near infrared light (NIR, around 750nm)
while red and blue are absorbed. Chlorophyll reflects strongly
which is why plants appear green to us but reflection in NIR in
even greater, this plays a very important role and helps in
rendering precise data for analysis. The principle of NDVI
relies on the fact that, due the spongy layers found on their
backsides, leaves reflect a lot of light in the near infrared, in
stark contrast with most non-plant object. When the plant
becomes dehydrated or stressed, the spongy layer collapses
and the leaves reflect less NIR light, but the same amount in
the visible range. Thus, mathematically combining these two
signals can help differentiate plant from non-plant and healthy
plant from a sickly one.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES

Technology used in Drone is very sophisticated and advanced
as it has to compensate the absence of the pilot and thus
enable the flight of unmanned aerial vehicle and its
autonomous behavior. They are mainly based on sensors and
microcontrollers, communication system, artificial
intelligence. Drone is an automated system and is separated
into two parts. Hardware control unit of the machine is called
Autopilot System, which is used to control the flight and
various characteristics. Autopilot unit consist of waypoint
navigation with altitude and airspeed, fully integrated IMU
(gyro, acc.), GPS system, Barometer pressure sensor. All these
MEMS (micro-electro mechanical systems) are integrated on
the board (see Fig. 3(a.)). All the sensors have independent
fail-safe program, in case of failure such as altitude, position,
communication modem, aircraft will start heading towards the
actual takeoff point, flight path and recorded data will be
saved in the autopilot chipset and can be easily downloaded on
the ground station computer for post flight analysis. Other
Modem (downlink) is connected to the Ground Control
Station Software updating the real time data of the aircraft.

simulations, tracking the flight path and monitoring its
heading and position on the map. It also generates a log file
for post flight analysis.

Vegetation indices in remote sensing is very common, some
indices use the RGB spectral bands. Indices used are :
Green Red Ratio Vegetation Index (GRRVI)
Or
Normalized Green Red Difference Index (NGRDI)
reflectance in green and red part of the spectrum.
Leaf Area Index (LAI) it characterizes plant canopies. One
sided green leaf area per unit ground surface area. (LAI = leaf
area/ground area).
NDVI ratio of reflectance in near infrared and red portions of
the electromagnetic spectrum (Fig. 2(b.)).

6. CONCLUSION
Use of Drone technology is beneficial in agriculture. The
output is encouraging the development and use of drones in
agriculture as a tool for site specific precision farming in small
field area. These can be used by farmers for data acquisition
and analysis, continuously monitoring fields for learning and
developing modern farm management skills. NDVI is a
method to absorb healthy vegetation into a picture the stressed
vegetation due to water stress, nutrition deficiency, other than
the diseased plants. This information is kind of actionable
intelligence that should be delivered to the farming
community. Currently drone analysis shows the variation in
agriculture production, new generation systems will not only
show the variations but also what is causing these variations in
the agricultural production. Drone will produce high precision
data to become the key components of the agriculture
industry. The future of agriculture industry is bright with
drones as a valuable tool that will increase profitability and
healthy crop production.

Context Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with red–green–blue (RGB) cameras are increasingly used as a monitoring tool in farming systems. This is the first field study in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilzcek) using UAV and image analysis across multiple seasons. Aims This study aims to validate the use of UAV imagery to assess growth parameters (biomass, leaf area, fractional light interception and radiation use efficiency) in mungbean across multiple seasons. Methods Field experiments were conducted in summer 2018/19 and spring–summer 2019/20 for three sowing dates. Growth parameters were collected fortnightly to match UAV flights throughout crop development. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and computed vegetation indices: colour index of vegetation extraction (CIVE), green leaf index (GLI), excess green index (ExG), normalised green-red difference index (NGRDI) and visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) were generated from UAV orthomosaic images. Key results (1) Mungbean biomass can be accurately estimated at the pre-flowering stage using RGB imagery acquired with UAVs; (2) a more accurate relationship between the UAV-based RGB imagery and ground data was observed during pre-flowering compared to post-flowering stages in mungbean; (3) FVC strongly correlated with biomass (R2 = 0.79) during the pre-flowering stage; NGRDI (R2 = 0.86) showed a better ability to directly predict biomass across the three experiments in the pre-flowering stages. Conclusion UAV-based RGB imagery is a promising technology to replace manual light interception measurements and predict biomass, particularly at earlier growth stages of mungbean. Implication These findings can assist researchers in evaluating agronomic strategies and considering the necessary management practices for different seasonal conditions.

The main objective of this study was to investigate soil–plant–water interactions based on field measurements of plant reflectance and soil water content (SWC) in different inter-row managed sloping vineyards. The following three different soil management applications were studied: tilled (T), cover crops (CC), and permanent grass (NT) inter-rows. We measured SWCs within the row and between rows of vines. Each investigated row utilized 7 to 10 measurement points along the slope. Topsoil SWC and temperature, leaf NDVI and chlorophyll concentrations and leaf area index (LAI) were measured every two weeks over the vegetation period (May to November) using handheld instruments. We found that management method and slope position can significantly affect the soil’s physical and chemical properties, such as clay or soil organic carbon contents. Cover crops in the inter-row significantly reduced average SWC. The in-row average topsoil SWCs and temperatures were lower in all study sites compared to the values measured in between rows. Significantly higher SWCs were observed for the upper points compared to the lower ones for CC and T treatments (58.0 and 60.9%, respectively), while the opposite was noted for NT. Grassed inter-row grapevines had significantly lower leaf chlorophyll content than the other inter-row managed sites (p < 0.001). The highest average leaf chlorophyll contents were observed in the T vineyard (16.89 CCI). Based on slope positions, the most distinguishable difference was observed for the CC: 27.7% higher chlorophyll values were observed at the top of the slope compared to the grapevine leaves at the bottom of the slope (p < 0.01). The leaf NDVI values were not as profoundly influenced by slope position in the vineyard as the chlorophyll values were. For overall LAI values, the T treatment had significantly lower values compared to NT and CC (p < 0.001). Moderate correlations were observed between NDVI and LAI and soil nitrogen and carbon content. In general, we found that both inter-row management and slope position can significantly influence soil parameters and affect plant growth, and consequently can accelerate plant stress under sub-optimal environmental conditions such as prolonged drought.

This research aims to define a low-cost replicable methodology for obtaining fast multiscale information models. The experiments carried out were conducted by researchers from Dada LAB and PLAY experimental Laboratories of the University of Pavia, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, on the case study of the irrigated landscape of the Pavia plain. The entire work process was developed according to a low-cost purpose, starting from fast acquisition activities with UAV instruments, to the processing of photogrammetric data, urban and detailed scale modelling with open-source software, to the census, filing, and computerisation of the model. The resulting product is configured as a multiscale reality-based information system. A census card is associated with each constituent element of the model (crops, canals, valuable hydraulic artefacts). Connection to the GIS platform allows the user to query the model. The result is a digital system oriented to facilitate the management of the agricultural and irrigation landscape, and to digitally document and preserve the heritage of historical hydraulic existing artefacts. Two different GIS platforms for structuring the information system were tested. The first involved a high-budget solution using ESRI ArcGIS Pro/ArcSCENE software, and the second involved using QGIS software, an Open-Source Geographic Information System, to develop an accessible information system without license fees, to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of low-cost processes.

The Niger Delta belongs to the largest swamp and mangrove forests in the world hosting many endemic and endangered species. Therefore, its conservation should be of highest priority. However, the Niger Delta is confronted with overexploitation, deforestation and pollution to a large extent. In particular, oil spills threaten the biodiversity, ecosystem services and local people. Remote sensing can support the detection of spills and their potential impact when accessibility on site is difficult. We tested different vegetation indices to assess the impact of oil spills on the land cover as well as to detect accumulations (hotspots) of oil spills. We further identified which species, land cover types and protected areas could be threatened in the Niger Delta due to oil spills. The results showed that the Enhanced Vegetation Index, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index were more sensitive to the effects of oil spills on different vegetation cover than other tested vegetation indices. Forest cover was the most affected land-cover type and oil spills also occurred in protected areas. Threatened species are inhabiting the Niger Delta Swamp Forest and the Central African Mangroves that were mainly affected by oil spills and, therefore, strong conservation measures are needed even though security issues hamper the monitoring and control.

Agricultural drones/unmanned aerial vehicles are aerial devices that can be employed in precision agriculture (PA). This technology not only offers the farmers in increasing their farm productivity but also helps in timely and convenient crop monitoring in the fields. Drones facilitate seed sowing, soil condition monitoring, irrigation scheduling, assessing crop conditions for their health and estimate stress if any along with livestock management. This chapter provides insight to applications of drones in PA and is helpful to the planners and decision-makers in agricultural research.

Flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida L.) are drought-sensitive ornamental trees. Two trials (in 2021 and 2022) were conducted to evaluate the physiological changes induced as a result of drought conditions. In an outdoor setting, trees were organized in a randomized complete block design. Three different irrigation treatments were applied at 125%, 25%, and 10% (control, moderate, and severe drought, respectively) of their daily water usage (evapotranspiration). The two physiological parameters normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and leaf moisture potential were collected every week for 1 month. Plant growth data (height and width) were collected at the beginning and the end of the study. Normalized difference vegetation index data collected with a handheld NDVI meter and a Sentera NDVI sensor mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were correlated for ground truthing. In 2021, control plants had a greater plant width increase and shoot biomass, whereas no significant differences in growth were observed among the treatments in 2022. In both trials, the NDVI was the greatest for control plants compared with the other treatments on days 7, 14, 21, and 27. In both studies, no differences were observed for leaf moisture potential on day 7, but was greatest for controls on days 14, 21, and 27. The correlation between the handheld NDVI and the UAV NDVI was found to be strong and positive, ranging from 0.84 to 0.93 (trial 1: P # 0.0001, P # 0.0001, P 5 0.0002, and P # 0.0001; trial 2: P 5 0.0002, P # 0.0001, P # 0.0001, and P # 0.0001 for weeks 1-4, respectively). This information will be applicable to understanding the physiology of the crop and the inclusion of emerging technology in crop production and monitoring.

Small format aerial imaging sensors are important data acquisition tools, but their positive attributes are too often overlooked. Nowadays, as the number of users of spatial data are dramatically increasing, the use of small format sensors is becoming more common. It is therefore important to rigorously assess small format sensors to ensure they are providing quality spatial data. Mostly small format sensors are used for topographic mapping, terrain modelling or multispectral imaging. This paper addresses the last of these three applications, multispectral imaging. The paper compares two different types of small format multispectral sensors, one a commercially available system, and the other a custom built system. It is found that the custom built system, which incorporates consumer grade digital SLR cameras, offers significant advantages over the commercial system.

Two critical limitations for using current satellite sensors in real-time crop management are the lack of imagery with optimum spatial and spectral resolutions and an unfavorable revisit time for most crop stress-detection applications. Alternatives based on manned airborne platforms are lacking due to their high operational costs. A fundamental requirement for providing useful remote sensing products in agriculture is the capacity to combine high spatial resolution and quick turnaround times. Remote sensing sensors placed on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could fill this gap, providing low-cost approaches to meet the critical requirements of spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions. This paper demonstrates the ability to generate quantitative remote sensing products by means of a helicopter-based UAV equipped with inexpensive thermal and narrowband multispectral imaging sensors. During summer of 2007, the platform was flown over agricultural fields, obtaining thermal imagery in the 7.5-13-mum region (40-cm resolution) and narrowband multispectral imagery in the 400-800-nm spectral region (20-cm resolution). Surface reflectance and temperature imagery were obtained, after atmospheric corrections with MODTRAN. Biophysical parameters were estimated using vegetation indices, namely, normalized difference vegetation index, transformed chlorophyll absorption in reflectance index/optimized soil-adjusted vegetation index, and photochemical reflectance index (PRI), coupled with SAILH and FLIGHT models. As a result, the image products of leaf area index, chlorophyll content ( C <sub>ab</sub>), and water stress detection from PRI index and canopy temperature were produced and successfully validated. This paper demonstrates that results obtained with a low-cost UAV system for agricultural applications yielded comparable estimations, if not better, than those obtained by traditional manned airborne sensors.

Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of optical indices from hyperspectral remote sensing in the assessment of vegetation biophysical variables both in forestry and agriculture. Those indices are, however, the combined response to variations of several vegetation and environmental properties, such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), leaf chlorophyll content, canopy shadows, and background soil reflectance. Of particular significance to precision agriculture is chlorophyll content, an indicator of photosynthesis activity, which is related to the nitrogen concentration in green vegetation and serves as a measure of the crop response to nitrogen application. This paper presents a combined modeling and indices-based approach to predicting the crop chlorophyll content from remote sensing data while minimizing LAI (vegetation parameter) influence and underlying soil (background) effects. This combined method has been developed first using simulated data and followed by evaluation in terms of quantitative predictive capability using real hyperspectral airborne data. Simulations consisted of leaf and canopy reflectance modeling with PROSPECT and SAILH radiative transfer models. In this modeling study, we developed an index that integrates advantages of indices minimizing soil background effects and indices that are sensitive to chlorophyll concentration. Simulated data have shown that the proposed index Transformed Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index/Optimized Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (TCARI/OSAVI) is both very sensitive to chlorophyll content variations and very resistant to the variations of LAI and solar zenith angle. It was therefore possible to generate a predictive equation to estimate leaf chlorophyll content from the combined optical index derived from above-canopy reflectance. This relationship was evaluated by application to hyperspectral CASI imagery collected over corn crops in three experimental farms from Ontario and Quebec, Canada. The results presented here are from the L'Acadie, Quebec, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research site. Images of predicted leaf chlorophyll content were generated. Evaluation showed chlorophyll variability over crop plots with various levels of nitrogen, and revealed an excellent agreement with ground truth, with a correlation of r2=.81 between estimated and field measured chlorophyll content data.
