P.F. Lesgaft's contribution to Russian physical education system

The article considers the theoretical, practical and natural-scientific fundamentals of the physical education system as provided by P.F. Lesgaft. It shows that the inventor was driven by the ideas of psychophysical integrity of a human and close interconnection of human ethical, intellectual and physical development processes and, hence, the relevant education process aspects. It was based on these ideas that P.F. Lesgaft designed the fundamental provisions of his physical education system that is basically intended to help the child control its own movements in the physical education process by analyzing, matching and assessing the sensations evoked by the muscular activity. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the fact that the notion of "physical education", as interpreted by P.F. Lesgaft, cannot be reduced (as often made by some researchers) to the motor qualities and the relevant knowledge acquisition process as he considered it much wider as a body and personality formation processes going simultaneously.

Odors, words and objects

The paper focuses on concepts and words referring to odors and to objects that have an odor. We argue that odors are an interesting object of study since they are evanescent, and since odor words do not refer to concrete and manipulable objects, but to scents evoked by objects. A second reason why odors are interesting is that some languages, as the Western ones, lack a specific odor lexicon, ... [Show full abstract] comparable in richness and variety to the color lexicon, and that performance on odors naming is typically worse than performance in color naming. In this work we discuss three main issues. First, we illustrate literature showing that, even if odor words do not have concrete referents, many languages encode them quite easily: the case of odors suggests that word meaning cannot be exhausted by the relationship with a referent, and highlights the importance of the social sharing of meaning. Second, we have discussed the peculiar status of odor concepts and words. Given their ambiguous status, their simple existence poses problems both to theories according to which concrete and abstract concepts do not differ, and to theories according to which they represent a dichotomy. Finally, we present an experiment in which we show that names of objects evoke their smell, and that these smells evoke approach and avoidance movements, in line with theories according to which words are grounded in both sensorial and motor systems.

Flavor is perceived through two human senses simultaneously: the sense of taste, operating in the mouth, mainly in the tongue, and the sense of smell in the nostrils, where aromas are detected. The stimuli responsible for aroma perception are volatile compounds; their nature and properties as well as the mechanisms of perception have been widely studied. This is not the case for the taste ... [Show full abstract] stimuli, consisting of non-volatile compounds responsible for the accepted four basic taste sensations: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. The available information on taste perception is almost exclusively dedicated to sweet taste for obvious economic and nutritional reasons. In this paper, the present knowledge on the nature of the taste stimuli, on the mechanisms of their perception and on the interactions among them is reviewed. The effects of interactions with other sensory attributes (aroma, color, texture) are also reviewed. Interactions may be due to different causes: physical and chemical interactions among food components, competition at the receptor site, changes in the neurophysiological signal, and changes in the psychological response. Food aromas, as part of the flavor sensation, exert their influ ence on taste perception, as taste compounds affect aroma perception. Color may also modify the perception of a particular taste, but very few studies have been dedicated to this effect. On the other hand, the influence of texture (viscosity, consistency, hardness) mainly on the sweet taste has been extensively studied. Some contradictory results on how texture affects sweet or other tastes are still not satisfactorily explained. The study of these effects has been intensified in the last years, mainly because they are an important aspect of the flavor release phenomenon, so decisive for optimization of formulated foods.

Perceptual interaction in mixtures containing bitter tasting substances

The criterion parameter appeared to shift in a more conservative direction after the stimulus diminution. These results are used to question the validity of both detection and discrimination indices in the measurement of pain. An alternative means for describing the experimental results revealed a striking adaptation-level effect with implications for the assessment of both experimentally induced and endogenous pain. The outcome of a second experiment reinforced the adaptation-level theory interpretation of the results and provided additional evidence concerning the difficultuies in evaluating SDT parameters in studies of potential analgesics.

The significance of our observation lies in the linking of the phenomenon of "sensation" directly to a physical measure. It suggests that if the laws of physics are universal, the laws of sensation and perception are similarly universal. It also connects the sensation of a simple, steady physical signal with the molecular structure of the signal: the greater the number of microstates or complexions of the stimulus signal, the greater the magnitude of the sensation (saltiness or loudness). The hypothesis is currently tested on two sensory modalities.

Psychophysical assessment of the urge-to-cough

The sensation of a need-to-cough, termed the urge-to-cough, was hypothesised to precede the motor cough behaviour. It was also hypothesised that subjects can estimate the magnitude of the cough stimulus. Adult subjects inspired 0-100 μM capsaicin through a mouthpiece connected to a nebuliser. The subjects estimated their urge-to-cough in response to the test aerosol using the urge-to-cough scale. ... [Show full abstract] The magnitude estimation (ME) number was plotted against the capsaicin concentration on a log/log scale and the slope was determined. Subjects rated their urge-to-cough with the vehicle and lowest capsaicin concentration as 0-0.5. As the concentration of capsaicin increased, the ME of the subjects' urge-to-cough increased. The log/log ME of the urge-to-cough of capsaicin was linear. The sensation of an urge-to-cough occurred before a cough was elicited. Coughs seldom occurred with an urge-to-cough ME of ≤3. Above the urge-to-cough ME=3, the number of coughs increased as the urge-to-cough ME increased. The results of this study indicate that subjects sense an urge-to-cough before the cough motor act. This study further demonstrates that the urge-to-cough increases with increasing cough-related sensory stimulation. This study demonstrated a linear log/log relationship between the magnitude estimation of the urge-to-cough and the cough stimulus.

[Show full abstract] between two independently existing things that have absolutely nothing in common? My dissertation provides a detailed reconstruction of Descartes' theory of mind-body union in order to show how Descartes avoided this problem, contrary to current scholarship. This study is conducted through a critical re-examination of Descartes' fundamental ontology and his metaphysics of human nature. New light is shed on these aspects of his metaphysics by considering them within the context of his Scholastic intellectual heritage and through the various criticisms made by some of his early modern successors. I argue that the union of mind and body is not, as most scholars maintain, constituted by efficient causal interaction for Descartes, because this kind of union does not result in one, complete human nature. Descartes goes on to argue that mind-body union is constituted by the Scholastic relation of substantial union, i.e. the union that form (the mind) has with matter (the body), because only this kind of union results in a complete human nature with the capacities for modes of sensation and appetite. On this account, these modes would be explained by the activity of one, whole thing instead of by the efficient causal interaction of two things. Hence, the problem of mind-body efficient causal interaction is avoided altogether, since no efficient causal occurrences play a role in the final account of a living human being.

In this paper, we conducted a systematic review ... [Show full abstract] investigating the assessments of olfaction and gustation with psychophysics methods in individuals with ASD. Pubmed, PMC and Sciencedirect were scrutinized for relevant literature published from 1970 to 2015. In this review, fourteen papers met our inclusion criteria. They were analyzed critically in order to evaluate the occurrence of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction in ASD, as well as to report the methods used to assess olfaction and gustation in such conditions. Regarding to these two senses, the overall number of studies is low. Most of studies show significant difference regarding to odor or taste identification but not for detection threshold. Overall, odor rating through pleasantness, intensity and familiarity do not differ significantly between control and individuals with ASD. The current evidences can suggest the presence of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction in ASD. Therefore, our analysis show a heterogeneity of findings. This is due to several methodological limitations such as the tools used or population studied. Understanding these disorders could help to shed light on other atypical behavior in this population such as feeding or social behavior.
