Abstract and Figures

Background The checklist of Greek Cyanobacteria was created in the framework of the Greek Taxon Information System (GTIS), an initiative of the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) that has resumed efforts to compile a complete checklist of species reported from Greece. This list was created from exhaustive search of the scientific literature of the last 60 years. All records of taxa known to occur in Greece were taxonomically updated. New information The checklist of Greek Cyanobacteria comprises 543 species, classified in 130 genera, 41 families, and 8 orders. The orders Synechococcales and Oscillatoriales have the highest number of species (158 and 153 species, respectively), whereas these two orders along with Nostocales and Chroococcales cover 93% of the known Greek cyanobacteria species. It is worth mentioning that 18 species have been initially described from Greek habitats. The marine epilithic Ammatoidea aegea described from Saronikos Gulf is considered endemic to this area. Our bibliographic review shows that Greece hosts a high diversity of cyanobacteria, suggesting that the Mediterranean area is also a hot spot for microbes. Keywords blue-green algae, Cyanophyceae, bacteria, microorganisms, Aegean Sea, freshwater, marine, checklist, biodiversity, Mediterranean

Introduction
The history of natural science is directly linked to Greek civilization, since the older written
references to plants, animals, and algae are found in the Homeric Epics dating back to the
8 century BC; the rst record of algae in the Western literature appears in Homer’s Iliad:
“the dark waves uprear their heads and scatter their sea-wrack (phycos) in all directions”
[Iliad IX.1 translated by Batler (1998)]. The Greek philosopher, and rst marine biologist,
Aristotle, who has established scientic knowledge for many animal and plant taxa (see
Voultsiadou 2007) reported “red snow” in 4 century BC: “after lying for some time, snow
turns slightly red” (Historia Animalium 552b8 translated by Peck 1970); this is considered
as one of the oldest records of snow algae [unicellular Chlorophyta, like Chlamydomonas
or Chloromonas according to Duval et al. (1999)].
In modern times, research on Greek microora, Cyanobacteria included, started in the 20
century with the studies of freshwater algae by Stanković (1931) and Skuja (1937). In the
subsequent two decades, no published work in microora can be traced until the
limnological survey by Ananiadis (1956). During the 1960s Konstantinos Anagnostidis
performs two extensive studies of Cyanobacteria from thermal springs (Anagnostidis 1961)
and sulphur-communities (Sulphuretum) in marine and freshwater habitats of Greece
(Anagnostidis 1968). These taxonomic studies revealed the occurrence of a great number
of cyanobacteria taxa, led to the description of several new species (e.g. Geitlerinema
apolloniae Anagnostidis, 2001; Leptolyngbya phormidioides (Anagnostidis) Anagnostidis &
Komárek, 1988; Pseudanabaena lonchoides Anagnostidis, 1961; Pseudophormidium
battersii (Gomont) Anagnostidis, 2001; Borzia periklei Anagnostidis in (Anagnostidis and
Komárek 1988)), and were later widely used to establish the modern classication system
of Cyanobacteria (Anagnostidis and Komárek 1985, Anagnostidis and Komárek 1988,
Anagnostidis and Komárek 1990, Komárek and Anagnostidis 1986, Komárek and
Anagnostidis 1989). Although a lot of the valuable taxonomic, ecological, and
biogeographical information recorded in Anagnostidis' monographs is now contained in the
“Süsswasserora von Mitteleuropa” series (Komárek 2013, Komárek and Anagnostidis
1999, Komárek and Anagnostidis 2005, Komárek 2013), many details of his work remain
unavailable to the broader scientic community since they were published in Greek.
The systematic research on Greek Cyanobacteria started in the 1980s with a series of
publications on cyanobacterial taxonomy and species composition (Anagnostidis and
Economou-Amilli 1978, Anagnostidis and Economou–Amilli 1980, Anagnostidis et al. 1981,

dynamics (Moustaka-Gouni 1988, Moustaka-Gouni and Nikolaidis 1990, Moustaka-Gouni
and Nikolaidis 1992, Tafas and Economou-Amilli 1997, Tryfon et al. 1997, Montesanto et
al. 1999, Moustaka-Gouni et al. 2000, Temponeras et al. 2000, Vardaka et al. 2000)
regarding both the freshwater and marine waterbodies. The recent research on
cyanobacterial diversity in Greece comprises polyphasic or multidisciplinary studies of
cyanobacteria strains (Gkelis et al. 2005b, Lamprinou et al. 2011, Lamprinou et al. 2013a,
Lamprinou et al. 2013b, Gkelis et al. 2015b, Gkelis and Panou 2016, Bravakos et al. 2016),
natural populations (Moustaka-Gouni et al. 2009, Moustaka-Gouni et al. 2010,
Papadimitriou et al. 2013, Gkelis and Zaoutsos 2014, Gkelis et al. 2014, Gkelis et al.
2015a), as well as ecological works (e.g. Lamprinou et al. 2009, Katsiapi et al. 2011,
Katsiapi et al. 2012).
Despite the increased research eorts, knowledge of diversity and distribution of
Cyanobacteria in Greece is still inconsistent since no list on local cyanobacterial ora has
ever been published. Modern biodiversity research faces an ever increasing rate of data
generation and eorts are made to structure, aggregate, link and process these data in a
meaningful way (Koureas et al. 2016). Currently, the Greek Taxon Information System
(GTIS), an initiative launched by the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure (ESFRI), is
resuming eorts to compile a database of all species reported from Greece; a prerequisite
for GTIS is to have checklists for each taxonomic group (Bailly et al. 2016). The aim of this
study is to create a checklist of cyanobacterial taxa inhabiting the area of Greece on the
basis of the recent taxonomic revisions.
Materials and methods
The Checklist of Greek Cyanobacteria was created in the framework of the Greek Taxon
Information System (GTIS), an initiative of the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure
(ESFRI) that has resumed eorts to compile a complete checklist of all species reported
from Greece (Bailly et al. 2016). In that publication, a methodology is described to produce
Preliminary Checklists only. However, in the present case of Cyanobacteria, the status of
the list for Greece was quite advanced, and the recent primary literature was exhaustively
searched for this work; the present list is thus considered as an updated, annotated, and
archived checklist.
The data for this study were collected through extensive search in the scientic literature of
the last 60 years. The search was performed in Scopus and Web of Science using the
keywords: Greece AND cyanobacteria, Greece AND phytoplankton, Greece AND
cyanoprokaryota, Greece AND blue-green algae. Furthermore, the two exhaustive
monographs by Anagnostidis (Anagnostidis 1961, Anagnostidis 1968) were studied and
the cyanobacterial taxa were recorded. All geographical areas of Greece and all biomes
(freshwater, marine, terrestrial, caves etc.) and biotic forms (planktic, benthic, periphytic,
endolithic, epizoic etc.) were considered.
Cyanobacteria of Greece: an annotated checklist 3
The taxonomic status of the recorded cyanobacterial taxa was checked and updated,
where necessary, to the currently accepted taxonomically species using Komárek and
Anagnostidis (1999), Komárek and Anagnostidis (2005), Komárek (2013), and the
AlgaeBase (Guiry and Guiry 2016). The species were classied to suprageneric taxa
according to the latest taxonomic revisions on the basis of polyphasic methods (Komárek et
al. 2014, Komárek 2016). Not valid species, species of unclear taxonomic status, and
species transferred to other phyla were excluded from the list. Also, infraspecic taxa that
are not valid or need revision were not included in the list. The rst publication mentioning a
taxon's occurrence in Greece and the original name used in that record is given under
Notes and Nomeclature, respectively.
Data resources
The data collected were published in Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) through
the Integrated Publishers Toolkit (IPT) according to the Darwin Core Archive biodiversity
informatics data standard and are made publicly available through GBIF (UUID: 655027fc-

Cyanobacteria of Greece: an annotated checklist 89
Analysis
A total of 543 species and 85 infraspecic taxa have been found in Greece up to date. The
species are classied in 130 genera, 41 families, and 8 orders. The orders
Synechococcales and Oscillatoriales have the highest number of species (158 and 153
species, respectively), whereas these two orders along with Nostocales and
Chroococcales cover 93% of the known Greek cyanobacteria species (Fig. 1). The families
Oscillatoriaceae, Leptolyngbyaceae, Microcoleaceae, and Chroococcaceae have the
highest number of species (>30 each) (Fig. 2a); the genera Phormidium, Leptolyngbya,
Oscillatoria, Chroococcus, Aphanocapsa, and Gloeocapsa have the highest number of
species (>15 each) (Fig. 2b). Fourteen species were found to include 85 infraspecic taxa (
Table 1); those infraspecic taxa were not included in the checklist. Furthermore, 21
species recorded in Greece are not valid or of uncertain taxonomic status (Table 2) and
were not included in the checklist.

Cyanobacteria of Greece: an annotated checklist 93
Discussion
A thorough review of the relevant literature revealed that 543 species of cyanobacteria
have been reported up to date from Greece. The species recorded from this area are
classied in 130 genera and 41 families, all of the 8 orders of the class Cyanophyceae
(Komárek et al. 2014) being represented. In this checklist we have not included 85
infraspecic taxa mostly from the genera Entophysalis, Gloeocapsa, Mastigocladus,
Scytonema, and Siphononema recorded in several habitats such as gulfs, waterfalls,
caves, and lakes by Anagnostidis (Anagnostidis 1961, Anagnostidis 1968). In the genus
Mastigocladus numerous taxa were described, which do not belong to this genus (Komárek
2013). Among the formae described by Anagnostidis, some are subject to revision [e.g. M.

genera including more than ve species are shown.
94 Gkelis S et al.
fa. microchaetoides is "surely not Mastigocladus, as it is morphologically similar to Aulosira"
according to Komárek (2013)]. The great morphological variability of this chroococcalean
and nostocalean species should be further investigated in the future.
A number of species reported in Greece were found to be of not valid or of uncertain
taxonomic status: The species Pleurocapsa crepidinum is possibly a Chroococcidiopsis
species and needs revision (Komárek and Anagnostidis 2005). The species Hydrocoleus
homoeotrichus sensu Anagnostidis et al. (1983), probably belongs to the Oscillatoriaceae
and into the genus Blennothrix (Komárek and Anagnostidis 2005) according to its trichome
structure. The taxon Aphanothece nidulans var. nidulans found in Lake Volvi (Hindak and
Moustaka 1988) is not included either in the Chroococcales volume of Süsswasserora von
Mitteleuropa (Komárek and Anagnostidis 1999) nor in the AlgaeBase (Guiry and Guiry
2016); Algaebase contains only two valid A. nidulans varieties: var. longissima Nash and
var. thermalis Hansgirg. Gloeocapsa polydermatica Kützing found in Nigrita hot springs
(Anagnostidis 1961) is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of the chlorophyte
Sporotetras polydermatica (Kützing) I.Kostikov, T.Darienko, A.Lukesová, & L.Homann
(Guiry and Guiry 2016). The taxon Scolecia losa found in microbial bioerosion at an
underwater marine site in Peloponnese (Färber et al. 2015) belongs to ichnotaxa produced
by unknown heterotrophic organisms (Heindel et al. 2009), not cyanobacteria. The
remaining 17 species belong to the family Pelonemataceae; this family, consisting of the
genera Achroonema, Pelonema, Peloploca, and Desmanthos, was created to
accommodate some colorless bacteria with multicellular laments (trichomes), which were
observed in hypolimnia of lakes and ponds or in sulfur springs (Hirsch 1981). At present,
members of this family are considered unclassied below the Kingdom level (Guiry and
Guiry 2016).
It is worth mentioning that 18 of the species included in the list have been initially described
from Greek habitats. The marine epilithic Ammatoidea aegea described from Saronikos
Gulf (Aegean Sea) (Anagnostidis and Pantazidou 1991a) is considered endemic to this
area (Komarek and Anagnostidis 2005). Interestingly, most of these new species were
found in rarely sampled habitats, such as caves [e.g. Toxopsis calypsus, Inoe spelaea
(Lamprinou et al. 2011)], marine coastal rocks [e.g. epilithic Cyanosarcina thalassia
(Anagnostidis and Pantazidou 1991b) or endolithic Cyanosaccus aegaeus and
Cyanosaccus atticus (Anagnostidis and Pantazidou 1985, Anagnostidis and Pantazidou
1988c)], archaeological sites [e.g. aerophytic, chasmoendolithic Cyanosarcina
parthenonensis (Anagnostidis and Pantazidou 1991b)], heliothermal saltwork mats
[Cyanothece halobia (Anagnostidis and Roussomoustakaki 1991)], and waterfalls
[Phormidium edessae (Skuja 1937)], highlighting the need for further research to reveal the
unknown diversity in these environments. A recent study by Bravakos et al. (2016) on
cyanobacteria strains isolated from mats of thermal springs of Greece indicates at least six
new taxa at the genus level. Furthermore, Konstantinou et al. (2016) report possible new
species on cyanobacteria strains isolated from marine sponges from the Aegean Sea, thus
corroborating the abundant diversity of lesser-known environments.
Cyanobacteria of Greece: an annotated checklist 95
To the best of our knowledge, the list of Greek cyanobacteria compiled for the needs of the
present study is the rst list of both freshwater and marine Cyanophyceae in the
Mediterranean. There is another list presenting 327 species from Israel (Tsarenko et al.
2000), but this refers only to the continental part of that country. The Egyptian list (Nassar
2014) contains 19 cyanobacteria species, whereas a phytoplankton checklist from the
Eastern Adriatic (Vilicic et al. 2002) contains no cyanobacteria. Other local cyanobacterial
lists were published in the past 15 years from continental parts of Europe, e.g. Slovakia,
Sweden, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Slovenia, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic
(Kaštovský et al. 2010 and references therein), as well as a checklist from the Baltic Sea
reporting 172 cyanobacterial species (Hällfors 2004). The Czech Republic list comprises
505 species, 392 of which are considered recently present according to Kaštovský et al.
2010. The cyanobacteria checklist of Nepal (Rai et al. 2011) presents 274 species.
Therefore, it appears that Greece hosts a comparatively high diversity of cyanobacteria,
suggesting that the Mediterranean area is also a hot spot for the “substantially
underestimated or unexplored” (Coll et al. 2010) microbes.

Cyanobacteria of Greece: an annotated checklist 103
... A single colony was found in the Netherlands (Frank & Landmann 1988), and one locality is known from Slovakia (Hindák 2005). On the contrary, Slovenia (Vrhovšek et al. 2006) and Greece (Gkelis et al. 2016), for example, do not report any occurrence at all. Nevertheless, M. geminata was also repeatedly reported from seawater in Romania (Caraus 2003), the discovery of which can indicate confusion with another species. ...

The genus Microcrocis belongs to long ago established cyanobacterial taxa for which relevant data required for a modern taxonomic analysis remained unknown for a long time. In present study we proposed an epitype originating from a large natural population of the type species M. geminata. Through isolating clean individual colonies from the environmental sample, sufficient material for a single colony PCR and amplification of genomic DNA by MDA method was obtained. Molecular analyses of the 16S rRNA gene determined the unsuspected position of the cyanobacterium within the family Geminocystaceae, forming a distinct branch with two Merismopedia sequences. 16S rRNA and ITS analysis clearly separated the two taxa on generic level. The phylogenetic classification is conspicuously consistent with the ultrastructure of parallel thylakoids unique for some members of the family Geminocystaceae. Distinctive morphology of the genus including typical longitudinal division is discussed.

Moorena producens is a benthic filamentous cyanobacteria that has been widely documented for its toxicity. This cyanobacterium colonizes both temperate (37%) and tropical (63%) regions, making it a cosmopolitan cyanobacterium with a global distribution. M. producens grows across coral reefs in multiple locations but recurringly blooms in Queensland, Australia. Today, nuisance blooms of M. producens have resulted in major disruptions to recreational activities along coastal areas and are known to cause adverse effects on organism and human health upon contact or ingestion. Specifically, marine organisms such as the green turtle Chelonia mydas and hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata were fatally poisoned by M. producens after consumption of this cyanobacterium. Reports record a range of effects on human health, from pain and blistering or even death upon ingestion of contaminated seafood. Blooms of M. producens are triggered by influxes of nitrogen, phosphate and iron, from surrounding coastal runoffs or sewage effluents. Additions of these nutrients can result in an increase in growth rate by 4–16 times. Iron bioavailability also plays a crucial role in bloom formation. A total of 231 natural products from 66 groups were identified from M. producens, with the three dominant groups: malyngamides, microcolins and dolastatins. These bioactive secondary metabolites have displayed toxicities against a range of carcinoma cell lines and organisms such as brine shrimp Artemia salina and goldfish Carassius auratus. This review provides a thorough insight to the distribution, ecophysiology and toxicity of M. producens, with reports on bloom events and implications on organism and human health.

Herein we provide an assessment of cyanobacterial diversity and habitat preferences of potentially toxic and alien taxa, which could be an important tool for human health risk assessment regarding recreational and water-supply waterbodies. The diversity changes of cyanobacteria in waters intended for human consumption in Serbia were analyzed two decades after the first floristic study was published. The examination included phytoplankton and phytobenthic sample analysis from 35 localities in the period between 2012 and 2017, together with published literature records. The results indicate that the number of identified taxa doubled since the first Serbian Flora of Cyanobacteria was released two decades ago. The changes most likely occurred due to environmental factors, including hydrological transformations of habitats, cultural eutrophication and global warming. Many frequently recorded taxa are potentially toxic and bloom-forming. The spread of alien species with potentially invasive characteristics has also been noted. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicates that shallow waterbodies are the most vulnerable regarding the occurrence and expansion of bloom-forming, potentially toxic and invasive taxa. This shows the urgent need for a more detailed investigation. Additionally, although most of the research was focused on planktonic forms, benthic cyanobacteria represent an important component for public health risk assessment and therefore should be more frequently investigated.

The marine life on the seafloor of the Aegean Sea, from the sea surface to the edge of the continental shelf, is presented as a succession, in four bathymetric zones. The first two zones (supralittoral and mediolittoral) correspond to intertidal system, which is very narrow, due to the small range of tides in the Aegean Sea. Next to them, the other two zones (infralittoral and circalittoral) correspond to the subtidal photic system, which, in contrary, is very large due to the high transparency of the seawater.

The attached Cyanophyta community is a model for monitoring aquatic systems and interpreting environmental change in aquatic systems. The present study aims to conduct a seasonal study on Cyanophyta attached to the concrete abutments of three bridges (Al-Jadriya Bridge, Bab Al-Moadam Bridge, and Al-Muthanna Bridge) in the Tigris River within the city of Baghdad, central Iraq (from October 2021 to June 2022). The study included the quality of Cyanophyta and, the eleven environmental parameters (water temperature, electric conductivity, salinity, pH, total alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen). Monthly samples were taken from the water under each bridge from three sampling sites in the river, and the results were presented as four seasons. A total of 45 Cyanophyta taxa were identified in the three orders. Order: Chroococcales 11%; Order: Oscillatoriales 64%; Order: Nostocales 25% dominance of Oscillatoriales from the second site, and the highest number of species recorded in the autumn. The study showed clear differences in the total number of algal species attached to different sites. The study was able to add a new record species to the Iraqi algae flora, which is Lyngbya sordida Gomont.

Cyanobacteria can form blooms and pose a threat to the functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Cyanobacterial invasions are expected to increase due to climate change. Alien species cause a decline in biodiversity by displacing native species, lead to extinctions, affect food webs, and produce cyanotoxins which potentially impact the environment and human health. Three species, Raphidiopsis raciborskii, Sphaerospermospis aphanizomenoides and Chrysosporum bergii, are considered non-native to European waters. Recently, they have expanded their native habitats and become established in temperate lakes. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of the countries where they are distributed and the occurrence of the blooms in Europe. We discuss the biotic and abiotic environmental factors that influence their establishment, as well as the characteristics of the species that make them so adaptable in non-native habitats. Understanding the interplay of these factors will allow us to better recognise patterns of invasiveness and predict their future threats to ecosystems.

The paper deals with first record of the representative of the nostocalean genus Stigonema in the terrestrial ecotope in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Ukraine. It was revealed in Cladonia dominated cryptogamic soil crust sampled from limestone outcrops with a rock-oak-hornbeam forest on the high bank of the Dniester Reservoir (Podilskyi Tovtry NNP). Heterocytous cyanobacterium with true branching identified as Stigonema minutum Hassal ex Bornet et Flahault formed prostrate blackish felty films on the surface of the crust. Information on morphological and dimensional features of the studied population, photomicrographs of natural material, characteristics of the habitat are given. Data on the distribution of the species within Ukraine, as well as ecological and biogeographic features of S. minutum are discussed.

Knowledge about cyanobacteria diversity in the Azores is spread over several publications, dating from 1874, with some of them not generally available to the scientific community due to their restricted access. The dispersion and sometimes inaccessibility of this information hinder a deeper analysis and a better understanding of the biodiversity of the Azores Islands and more general ecological processes in oceanic islands. Here we present the first checklist of cyanobacteria for the Azores Archipelago with updated taxonomy of all recorded taxa. This work provides a compiled and annotated checklist of all known cyanobacteria from the Azores Archipelago with morphological identification from preserved samples and cultures, based on published literature. All records of taxa known to occur in the Azores were taxonomically updated. The present checklist comprises 225 taxa distributed by six orders (Chroococcales, Nostocales, Oscillatoriales, Pleurocapsales, Spirulinales and Synechococcales). Our literature review reveals that the Azores Archipelago hosts a high diversity of cyanobacteria, despite several overlooked habitats that may present great potential regarding cyanobacteria diversity. Increasing efforts to study these neglected habitats could contribute to the knowledge of cyanobacteria taxonomy. This checklist provides the basis for future works on the taxonomy and taxa richness of cyanobacteria in the Azores and the Atlantic Islands, as also for understanding and monitoring non-indigenous and invasive species.

Well-studied thermal spring microbial mat systems continue to serve as excellent models from which to make discoveries of general importance to microbial community ecology in order to address comprehensively the question of “who is there” in a microbial community. Cyanobacteria are highly adaptable and an integral part of many ecosystems including thermal springs. In this context, we sampled disparate thermal springs, spanning from Iceland and Poland to Greece and Tajikistan. Thirteen (13) strains were isolated and characterised with taxonomic indices and molecular markers (16S-23S rRNA region and cpcBA gene), whilst their thermotolerance was evaluated. Screening for the presence of genes encoding three heat shock proteins, as well as non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and polyketide synthases (PKSs) was performed. This approach resulted in the description of two new genera (Hillbrichtia and Amphirytos) and their type species (Hillbrichtia pamiria and Amphirytos necridicus) representing Oscillatoriales and Synechococcales orders, respectively. We also found unique lineages inside the genus Thermoleptolyngbya, describing a novel species (T. hindakiae). We described the presence of sub-cosmopolitan taxa (such as Calothrix, Desertifilum, and Trichormus). Strains were diverse concerning their thermophilic ability with the strains well adapted to high temperatures possessing all three investigated genes encoding heat shock proteins as well as studied PKS and NRPS genes. In this work, we show novel cyanobacteria diversity from thermal springs from disparate environments, possible correlation of thermotolerance and their genetic background, which may have implications on strategic focusing of screening programs on underexploited taxa in these habitats.

Cyanobacteria are ecologically versatile microorganisms, occupying diverse habitats, from terrestrial caves to coastal shores and from brackish lakes to thermal springs. Cyanobacteria have also been linked with hydrogen cyanide (HCN), mainly for their ability to catabolize HCN by the nitrogenase enzyme. In this context, we sampled disparate environments, spanning from Canary Islands and Iceland to Estonia and Cyprus. Eighty-one (81) strains were isolated and characterised with taxonomic indices and molecular markers (16S-23S rRNA region and cpcBA region), whilst their ability to produce HCN was evaluated. This approach resulted in the description of five new genera (Speleotes, Haliplanktos, Olisthonema, Speos, and Iphianassa) and their type species (S. anchialus, H. antonyquinny, O. eestii, S. fyssassi, I. zackieohae) representing Chroococcales, Chroococcidiopsales, Oscillatoriales, Synechococcales, and Nostocales orders, respectively. We also found unique lineages inside the genera Komarekiella, Stenomitos, Cyanocohniella, and Nodularia, describing four new species (K. chia, S. pantisii, C. hyphalmyra, N. mediterannea). We report for the first time a widespread production of HCN amongst different taxa and habitats. Epilithic lifestyle, where cyanobacteria are more vulnerable to grazers, had the largest relative frequency in HCN production. In this work, we show novel cyanobacteria diversity from various habitats, including an unexplored anchialine cave, and possible correlation of cyanobacteria chemo- with species diversity, which may have implications on strategic focusing of screening programs on underexploited taxa and/or habitats.

The family Pelonemataceae Skuja 1956, 81, was created to accomodate some colorless bacteria with multicellular filaments (trichomes), which were observed in hypolimnia of lakes and ponds or in sulfur springs (Skuja, 1956). The family consists of the genera Achroonema, Pelonema, Peloploca, and Desmanthos. The differentiation characteristics are listed in Table 1; the aggregate-forming Desmanthos and Peloploca are well separated from the other two genera, and they can be readily distinguished from each other. However, it is difficult to differentiate between some Achroonema and Pelonema species because of overlapping properties.
