New records of Uromyces erythronii (Pucciniales) from Ukraine

Specimens of the rust fungus Uromyces erythronii were recorded on Erythronium dens-canis, a rare species listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, in April 2016 near Chemeryntsi village (Lviv Region, Ukraine) and in May 2016 near Zaluzhne village (Zhytomyr Region, Ukraine). An investigation of the Erythronium specimens deposited in the herbaria of vascular plants of Lviv Natural History Museum (LWS) and M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany (KW) revealed four more samples of this fungus. A list of all localities in which U. erythronii was recorded in Ukraine is provided. The article is illustrated by micrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy.

Identification and characterization of Entyloma eschscholziae, a recently introduced pathogen in Europe, and its segregate Entyloma dendromeconis sp. nov.

Entyloma includes pathogenic and saprobic species that infect or colonize dicotyledonous host plants. Although most Entyloma species are known only from native areas of occurrence, some species were introduced with their host plants and spread outside their natural areas. The identification of introduced species is important for detection and management of invasive species. In this study, the morphology, phylogeny and species boundaries of Entyloma eschscholziae, recently introduced from North America to Europe, are revisited. Morphology was similar among the type and other specimens of E. eschscholziae analysed on Eschscholzia californica. Both asexual and sexual morphs were observed. The rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences of the E. eschscholziae specimens from Europe and New Zealand and the environmental sequence obtained from grassland soil in California, United States, were identical. Morphological and molecular analyses confirm that the causative agents of white smut on E. californica in native (North America) and introduced (Europe, New Zealand) areas belong to the same species. DNA barcodes obtained in this study (especially ITS sequence from the designated epitype specimen) could be used to facilitate its molecular identification. Specimens on Dendromecon rigida, previously assigned to E. eschscholziae, are morphologically distinct. An attempt to obtain DNA barcode data from degraded holotype material was not successful and no more recent material is available. However, based on the morphological differences and high host specificity found in Entyloma spp., it is appropriate to describe a new species, Entyloma dendromeconis, for this smut pathogen.

A phylogenetic hypothesis of Ustilaginomycotina based on multiple gene analyses and morphological data

The subphylum Ustilaginomycotina comprises about 1500 species of basidiomycetous plant parasites. They are usually dimorphic, producing a saprobic haploid yeast phase and a parasitic dikaryotic hyphal phase. With only a few exceptions they occur on angiosperms and are found mainly on members of the Poaceae and Cyperaceae. Molecular methods recently have shown that anamorphic species such as members of Malassezia or Tilletiopsis should be included in this group. Here we present the most recent consensus as to the phylogeny of this group and discuss its relevant characteristics. Our morphological, ultrastructural and molecular phylogenetic data point to the existence of three lines of Ustilaginomycotina: Entorrhizomycetes, Ustilaginomycetes and Exobasidiomycetes. Entorrhizomycetes is represented by Entorrhizales, a small group of unusual teliosporic root parasites on Juncaceae and Cyperaceae. Ustilaginomycetes, to which the majority of Ustilaginomycotina belong, is a teliosporic and gastroid group characterized by the presence of enlarged interaction zones. Ustilaginomycetes is dichotomous, consisting of predominantly holobasidiate Urocystales and predominantly phragmobasidiate Ustilaginales. Exobasidiomycetes forms local interaction zones. This group is predominantly holobasidiate and consists of teliosporic Doassansiales, Entylomatales, Georgefischeriales and Tilletiales, nonteliosporic Ceraceosorales, Exobasidiales and Microstromatales, as well as the anamorphic Malasseziales. Entorrhizomycetes, Exobasidiomycetes and Ceraceosorales are proposed as new taxa, and the description of Ustilaginomycetes is emended.

Smut fungi in Africa – a checklist

Th e checklist of the smut fungi of Africa and adjacent islands contains 427 species in 47 genera, arranged alphabetically. A short description of each genus is provided. For each species the author(s), place of publication, type(s), nomenclatural and taxonomic synonyms are given, as well as the host plant family, host plant genus (genera), and general distribution are mentioned. For each species the African host plants and the countries from where they are known are enumerated. A chapter of doubtful, excluded or invalidly published taxa is compiled. A list of selected literature is completing the paper. Th e checklist refl ects the great, but incompletely known biodiversity of Africa.

The genus Microbotryum is revised. After a short historical review and discussion of taxonomic and nomenclatural problems and delimitation of this genus, it is demonstrated that, i.a., typical for Microbotryum are the violet tint of the spores and the host plant range restricted to dicotyledonous genera. In addition to the 17 described Microbotryum species, further 55 Ustilago species are proposed to be placed into this genus, using a simple "colour contrast" method These species are: On Caryophyllaceae: M. arenariae-bryophyllae, M. duriaeanum, M. holostei, M. jehudanum, M. moehringiae, M. moenchiae-manticae, M. nivale. The emended Ustilaginaceae of the modern classificatory system for smut fungi

Some of the higher taxa of the modern classificatory system for smut fungi are analysed. It is shown that the emended family of Ustilaginaceae, with its 29 genera unified by an identical ultrastructure, is heterogeneous. Based on classical morphological and ecological characters, including host taxonomy, several genera are excluded from this family and placed into other families. New families proposed are: Clintamraceae, Dermatosoraceae, Farysiaceae, Geminaginaceae, Melanopsichiaceae, Uleiellaceae and Websdaneaceae. The family Cintractiaceae was expanded to include also Heterotolyposporium, Leucocintractia, Testicularia, Tolyposporium, Trichocintractia and Ustanciosporium. A few genera with uncertain placement regarding their family, are mentioned. Spore colour in the classification of smut fungi is discussed. The generic name Uleiella J. Schröt, instead of Ulea J. Schröt, is preferred.
