Technology: Trenchless technology provides environmental advantages

A trenchless technology that provides environmental advantages is discussed. The advantages of trenchless technology includes less disruption to customers, less spoil creation for disposal, use of remote line repairs and installation of pipelines under frozen ground in cold weather. It is observed that the renewal of existing pipelines is easier with trenchless technology.

Synoptic Forcing of Wind and Temperature in A Large Cirqi 300 Km from the Coast of East Antarctica

Between 18 January 1988 and 3 June 1989, an automatic weather station recorded 13 different weather parameters every 3 h on a blue-ice area located in Scharffenbergbotnen, a large cirque in central Heimefrontfjella 300 km from the Weddell Sea coast. [Show full abstract] comparison is also made with corresponding data from the Neumayer and Halley stations. The second part deals mainly with winter (i.e. April–September) conditions in Scharffenbergbotnen. They seem, at least during 1988–89, to have been characterized by a large-scale (30–40 days) and, superimposed on the large-scale, a small-scale (3–4 days) co-variation of air temperature, air pressure and wind speed. The large-scale variation was earlier found to be synoptically forced. This paper shows that synoptic forcing exists also on smaller time scales. Pools of cold, stagnant air are regularly formed in the cirque only to be blown away by katabatic winds triggered by small variations in the synoptic pressure field. When this happens the air temperature increases by more than 20°C and the wind direction swings from east towards south-east. When low pressures dominate in the eastern part of the Weddell Sea, the katabatic winds become very strong, but weaker wind pulses also take place when the synoptic pressure gradient is directed towards the north-east. It therefore seems as if these very regular katabatic events are forced both by synoptic-scale pressure gradients and gradients due to the sloped inversion.

The wind angle and the size of the wind velocity were determined using data from weather stations near soundproof tunnels. The CFD analysis results of the soundproof tunnels on expressways revealed that the wind velocity decreased by 30–60% following the installation of soundproof tunnels.

Oil viscosity increases rigorously at low temperature, decreasing pipeline pressure and oil flow. Ambient temperature below 60° F. will decrease the oil flow rate and cause serious problems. A lone preheater at the beginning of the pipeline without insulation can therefore not solve shipment problems.

Thermal Mapping in Flat Lowlands and Undulating Uplands – A Comparison of Results

[Show full abstract] accessible and more affordable to apply, thermal mapping started being pushed out to the background as an expensive alternative. The idea for this paper arose from thermal mapping applications to Lithuanian roads that produced inconclusive results in some research areas and raised the question of whether this technique applies to flatlands as effectively as to uplands. The Czech Republic was chosen as a country with an available database and environmentally different road network. Several stretches of road thermal mapping data were analysed and compared. It was concluded, that in flat landscapes altitude has lesser predictability value for road surface temperature than in undulating uplands. In addition, thermal mapping results appear to be more inconclusive in flatlands, compared to uplands. Nevertheless, thermal mapping is a good and reliable method for determining cold spots.

Meso and synoptic scale flow developments downstream of large-scale orography

Flow structures that lead to significant weather events can be triggered or modified by mountains in a large variety of ways. Upper tropospheric troughs can be intensified or reduced by large-scale orography and an intensification of the troughs may lead to explosive cyclogenesis downstream. Diversion of the low level airmasses can lead to strong temperature gradients and baroclinic structures ... [Show full abstract] inside or at the edge of the mountain wake. Blocking of cold low level air may modify the structure of passing cyclones so that the associated windstorms can either be reduced or intensified. The creation of a large scale and deep wake can also accelerate the flow far outside the wake, even at levels far above the mountain tops. In cases of intense and widespread precipitation, the release of latent heat may also modify the large-scale flow. A new research program, THORPEX, aiming at improving prediction of the large-scale atmospheric flow through development of dynamically-controlled observations and data assimilation is currently being prepared. Orographic flow perturbations that have significant impact on the large-scale weather development downstream of the mountains will be an object of THORPEX and the results of the above studies will be discussed in this context.

Production in Spruce Grouse and its relationship to environmental factors and population parameters

The extent to which a relationship existed between selected environmental and population parameters and annual production in a population of spruce grouse (Dendragapus canadensis franklinii) was investigated through correlation analysis of data spanning 16 years. [Show full abstract] There was no evidence that differences in annual productivity were related to variation (maximum of 17 days) in the onset of reproduction, a function of spring temperatures. Nevertheless, weather conditions during incubation and the immediate posthatch period did exhibit a significant correlation with productivity: cold, wet conditions during incubation were associated with years of poor productivity, whereas the same conditions during the immediate posthatch period were associated with years of good survival of young (at least to 19 days of age). Clutch and brood sizes of yearlings were smaller than those of adults; hence, production could be influenced by the proportion of the population in each age category. An inverse relationship between the density of resident females in spring and their annual production, believed to be important in this population, was reexamined with data from an additional 6 years. The relationship, although still inverse, was no longer significant.

However, repair of the failed unit is not allowed in abnormal weather while system remains operative. Priority is given to operation and repair of main unit over duplicate unit. The distributions for failure times of the units and time to change of weather conditions are taken as negative exponential while that of repair time of the units are arbitrary. All random variables are statistically independent. The results for some important reliability measures have been analyzed graphically for arbitrary values of various parameters and costs.
