Relationships relating to Supply Chain Management Practices, Net Trade Cycle, and Financial Performance have examined in one model. It can no longer be denied that we are all expected to have a high degree of significance. We ought to create integral correlations among key practices of supply chain management which are supplier partnership, customer relationship, information sharing, and lean system. This fact cannot be overstressed. This book is based on the premise that supply chain management practices influences on financial performance that are explained through mediation of net trade cycle. They should be taken directly to Business and Management Schools, Universities, and Colleges around the world where relationships relating to supply chain management practices are explored for learning purposes. Integrating supply chain management practices into the curricular involves some challenges, one of which includes finding suitable teaching material and suitable books. To date, most of the available books in the field of supply chain management are either theoretically or practically focused, which perhaps make them less ideal for all purposes! This book has taken an ideal approach to that adopted by these other good quality books; in that it combines the theoretical aspects of supply chain management practices with the practical dimensions of the field in order to give our readers the opportunity to have a balanced understanding of how the field has evolved and continues to evolve from both angles; since its general acceptance worldwide. The book focuses on three pillars of financial management in one model which are of interest to all business and management students, academics, researchers, practitioners, consultants, and corporate managers. It is hoped that the book would meet all our readers’ information requirements in each of the aspects it covers or at least get them thinking about all the interpretations covered in this edition.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to conduct an exploratory study that will assist supply chain firms in the development of partner satisfaction, flexibility, and supply chain performance. The authors examine how the interaction of information exchange, partner interaction, knowledge sharing and flexibility as mediated through partner satisfaction effectuates firm performance. The goal of this research is to answer the supply chain managers’ need to better understand where to invest their time and effort to get improved firm performance. Design/methodology/approach The model was tested with panel data from 105 experienced, US-based supply chain managers. Structural equation modeling using partial least squares approach was utilized to conduct the analysis. Findings The results provide crucial evidence that simple information exchange among supply chain partners does not result in improvements in firm performance or partner satisfaction, but, when mediated through the flexibility construct, it does. Further, the use of integration tools has a moderating effect on the relationship between flexibility and firm performance. The results suggest that working closely with supply chain partners helps ensure improved relationship satisfaction, and can reduce issues that can impact firm performance. Research limitations/implications The empirical research presented requires additional validation though larger sample data from supply chain managers. Practical implications This study stresses on the importance of managers using information exchange, partner interaction, and knowledge sharing as a means of improving their firm’s indirect influence on firm performance through flexibility and integration tools. Originality/value This is one of the few studies in the supply chain literature that integrates flexibility as a mediator variable. Additionally, this study introduces the new construct of integration tools to the supply chain literature.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between two major constructs (supply chain management practices (SCMP) and supply chain performance measures), which determines the efficiency and efficacy of retail-supply chain management, using a rigorous empirical method to validate the instrument scale for measuring the validity and reliability of the identified constructs. Additionally, the paper further tests the relationship between SCMP and supply chain performance measures using structural equation modeling (SEM). Design/methodology/approach Data were compiled and collected from 213 operations and supply chain (SC) heads from leading retail stores in India. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the validity of the proposed measurement scale and the relationship is tested using SEM. Findings The results of the research will help the decision makers in the SC/procurement field to understand the importance of the association between SCMP and supply chain performance measures. Statistical tests show that the implementation of SCMP are associated with supply chain performance measures, which leads to overall improvements; moreover, there is a statistically significant association between the five SCMP and eight SCPM. Research limitations/implications This research is also needed to provide more understanding about the SCMP along with the supply chain performance measures and the positive association among them. Overall, this research provides an additional insight into the growing field of the relationships between SCMP and SCPM. Clearly, the field has ample space to grow in terms of research and practice. Originality/value This research paper contributes to the literature on supply chain performance measurement.

Information sharing is vital for the coordination of supply chain partners. Information technologies offer numerous opportunities for information exchange between supply chain members. The aim of this study is to estimate the level of information sharing among SMEs located in Vlore city, Albania. The objectives of this research are: to identify the information technologies that are used by companies, type and frequency of information shared, to assess the level of information sharing and to identify the company characteristics like experience, number of employees, sector, role in the supply chain, use of IT tools, that impact the level of information sharing. The target population consists of all small and medium enterprises operating in Vlore city, Albania. A questionnaire was distributed to top managers and IT specialists of targeted companies during November 2015. The descriptive analysis, the chi-squared test of independence and logistic regression are used to analyze the data. It is found that the role of company as a retailer in the supply chain and the use of IT tools were positively related with the level of information sharing, whereas the local business expansion was negatively related. The results of this study are important to find out which business characteristics affect information sharing. Top managers and IT specialists of companies can be based on these results to improve the overall performance of their supply chain.
... Many researchers have highlighted the essentials of information sharing practices in a supply chain (Fiala, 2005;Lee et al., 2000;Strader et al., 1999). Supply chain members who share information regularly and frequently are able to work collaboratively as a single entity (Stein and Sweat, 1998). Eventually, members or partners in the supply chain could understand each other better and, accurately respond to ever changing customer requirements (Collin et al., 2009). ...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to employ a newly developed framework to examine the complex relationship between different components of supply chain practices, supply chain integration (SCI) and supply chain performance (SCP) in the Malaysian electronics sector. Design/methodology/approach – This study utilizes survey data of 156 electronics firms in Malaysia and tested the research framework and hypotheses. In addition to the traditional approach of Barron and Kenny (1986), the Sobel test as well as a bootstrapping approach, which is deemed for small sample size, is used to formally test the indirect effects of SCI in the model. Findings – SCI has fully and partially mediated the relationship between supply chain management practices (SCMPs) and SCP. SCI fully mediates the relationship between SCP and three of the SCMPs, namely, information quality, agreed vision and goals and postponement strategies. The relationship of supply strategic partnership, customer relation management, information sharing with SCP were partially mediated by SCI. Risk and reward sharing is found to be non-significant. These insights allow managers to effectively utilize the different components of SCMPs for SCI and performance. Practical implications – For supply chain practitioners, the results of the study can be useful in integrating SCMPs and SCI on improving SCP. Practitioners should take into account the mediating effect of SCI in designing their supply chain management approach to production. Originality/value – To the authors’ best knowledge, this paper is one of the first to address the mediating effect of SCI between SCMPs and overall performance of the supply chain.
... For integration of members within the supply chain, information systems plays an important role (Zhao et al., 2002). Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of supply chain quality management (SCQM) and to propose a research model that considers the impact of SCQM practices on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a comprehensive literature review, SCQM most relevant practices were analyzed and selected. These practices were categorized into four dimensions: upstream (supplier assessment, supplier quality management (QM)), downstream sides of a supply chain (customer focus), internal process (product/service design, process management and logistics) and support practices (top management support, human resource management, information and supply chain integration). The measurement instrument of firm performance was also developed, including three aspects: operational performance, customer satisfaction and financial performance. Findings – An innovative conceptual framework that provides a comprehensive picture covering core dimensions of SCQM and various aspects of firm performance was proposed. This conceptual framework can be used as “a guideline” for theory building and measurement instrument development of SCQM and firm performance. More importantly, on the road to gain a further insight, an extensive structural model that identifies direct and indirect relationships between SCQM and firm performance was also developed. Practitioners/managers can apply this model as “a road map” for implementing SCQM practices. Research limitations/implications – It is necessary to test the rationality of these models by using empirical studies in different contexts. Originality/value – The integration of quality and supply chain management still remains limited in the literature. Therefore, it is necessary to have a more focussed approach in assessing QM issues within the internal and external supply chain contexts. This study concentrates on the practices which improve quality aspects of the supply chain, known as SCQM practices. Proposed research models in this paper not only fill out the voids in the literature, but also contribute with conceptual frameworks for theory building in SCQM and firm performance. The authors also expect that this research can offer a useful guidance for measuring and implementing SCQM practices as well as facilitate further studies in this field.

... In the information sharing literature, many authors have analysed the impact of information sharing. According to Stein and Sweat (1998), by exchanging information, such as point of sales (POS), forecasting data, inventory level, and sales trends, the companies are reducing their cycle times, fulfilling orders more quickly, cutting out millions of dollars in excess inventory and improving customer services. Generally, there is not much consensus on the magnitude of cost savings achieved by the information sharing (Chan and Chan, 2009). ...

This research aims to develop a process simulation model for determining the best possible business solutions to improve order fulfilment in manufacturing products and in reducing stock-out in a regional distribution centre. The common practice in the pharmaceutical industry often overlooks the importance of demand information sharing that enables the integration of distribution planning and control. On the basis of a case study in a national pharmaceutical company, it was found that a number of regional distribution centres failed to achieve the target of order fulfilment due to stock-out. The stock-outs were caused by the insufficient capacity, improper forecasting method, and incompliance between the sales forecast and information sharing. Monte Carlo simulation was adopted to assess the optimal operational performance for the company under different scenarios. An appropriate option was selected based on better order fulfilment and the lowest reduction in both the stock-out and relevant cost.

Now a days firms are not only competing as autonomous units instead they entered in to an era of competing among different supply chains, leading them to work as a team in the form of network of business relationship. As competition becomes stiff, firms must be more involved in how their suppliers and customers conduct their businesses. To succeed in today’s challenging business environment, firms must be able to effectively integrate the internal function within a company and effectively link them with the external operations of supply chain members. Due attention should be given by firms to supply chain management practices as it has significant influence in enhancing SCM functions and ultimately performances. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to examine the practices and effect of supply-chain management on firms’ competitive advantage; and to look at the effect of inventory management on firms’ performance. Moreover, the study attempted to identify major challenges of supply-chain management in selected manufacturing firms in Ethiopia. To attain the objectives quantitative approach was employed. Moreover, a descriptive inquiry along with causal research design was used. Primary data were obtained from survey questionnaires. Large manufacturing firms; 2 textiles and 2 sugars were selected as samples using purposive sampling technique. In addition, 4 officials from each of the eight departments’ viz., General Managers, Purchasing managers, Technical managers, Operation managers, Quality managers, Transport managers, Sales and IT managers were selected from the four firms included in the study. Hence, a total of 128 respondents from each of the three studies were judgmentally selected. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 version using descriptive statistics, Correlation analysis and multiple regressions analysis. Accordingly, based on the regression result it is revealed that the supply chain dimensions included in the study viz., customer relationship management, customer service management, level of information sharing, demand management process, environmental issues, and supplier relationship management were positively and significantly affect firms competitive advantage. Finally, it is suggested that manufacturing firms should create close relationship with customers to differentiate their products from competitors. Moreover, manufacturing firms are recommended to apply information technology like electronic data interchange within and among the supply chain umbrellas as a whole.

The construction industry has undergone a radical transformation in its design and documentation process as it evolved from the days of the drafting board to today’s Building Information Modeling process. Despite the progress, a paradox of designing 3D in 2D space remains, calling for new visualization technologies that leverage the use of information in construction. Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging technology that can serve as an information aggregator and a data-publishing platform, allowing users to view and interact with information while collaborating with others in real-time from remote locations. While AR holds the key to advance the construction industry, no research project has yet comprehensively investigated the holistic integration of AR in construction. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive map that provides a holistic framework to understand the integration of AR into the construction phase. To achieve the research objective, the paper identifies and describes 23 use-cases of AR in the construction phase, nine AR capabilities, and 14 AR potential benefits. Then, four AR applications in construction are explored, where the underlying use-cases are discussed and mapped as a function of their corresponding AR capabilities and potential benefits. These AR applications provide an example to illustrate the concept behind the comprehensive map. Finally, the map is developed by outlining the relationships between the identified AR use-cases, capabilities, and potential benefits. The findings of this paper are crucial for the AR implementation roadmap as it provides industry practitioners an understanding of the capabilities and benefits of integrating AR into construction tasks.

This chapter discusses decentralized supply chain scheduling applications and related models that use optimization methodology. We study four problems that have both a scheduling component and a second component that arises from the structure of the supply chain and the self-interest of the different parties. We discuss mathematical models to evaluate the cost of conflict experienced by one party when another party dominates the decision making process and also to evaluate the benefit of cooperation between the parties. Methods by which one party can compensate others, in order to achieve such cooperation, are also discussed.

The objective of this paper is to investigate empirically the effect of information sharing and inventory management practice on firms’ performance. To achieve the stated objective the study targeted supply chain practices of some companies operating in Ethiopia. Data were collected from 170 respondents including employees, suppliers, and distributors of the companies under investigation. Before the analysis of data, the accuracy of data entry, the existence of missing values, normality of data distribution and outliers checked and proved the nonexistence of serious issues. The specified objective and proposed hypotheses in this study tested by structural equation modelling (SEM). The result shows information sharing and inventory management practices have a direct and significant effect on the firm’s performance. Similarly, the higher share of information leads to better inventory management practice, which in turn leads to a greater performance of firms. The study concludes that information sharing has both direct and indirect effects on a firm's performance in the supply chain practices; whereas inventory management practices have a direct effect on the firm's performance. Generally, the results of the study have major theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, it offers concrete evidence on the significant effects of information sharing and inventory management in the supply chain practices on firm’s performance in developing countries; and hence contributes to the scarce body of literature and reduces the gaps of knowledge in the developing countries on the specified area of study. Besides the theoretical implication, practically the study allows the companies and industries under the considerations to recognize the significant effects of information sharing and inventory management practices on firm’s performance and to use this information to develop and enhance culture of information sharing and usage of sound inventory management techniques in the supply chain practices for the enhancement of organizational performance.

Today companies no longer compete merely as an independent business but rather as supply chains. Individual businesses no longer operate in isolation and neither should their strategic orientation be wholly individualistic. This attracted supply chain management concept to be used. Supply chain management primarily designed by firms to get competitive advantage over the rival firms and to overcome the intense global competition coming from globalization, innovation, free trade and economic cooperation formed in different region. The concept led to cooperation and integration among firms and with their suppliers, distributors, consumers, and transport agency. It is totally systematic coordination and management from upstream to downstream paths of an organization. The importance and research interest in supply chain management are growing from time to time; however, the number of professional materials and well-organized review literature is limited relative to the growing trend of the area. Therefore, this paper reviewed different supply chain management articles, reports, and books by concentrating on logistics practices and information sharing on supply chain performance to develop a well-organized research article that advances supply chain management understanding. Under the logistics practices, the major variables discussed were the effect of the road network, transportation cost, facility location, waiting time, inventory management and mode of transportation, whereas the effect information sharing discussed from the viewpoints of the level of information sharing and quality of information on supply chain performance.

Despite the increasing popularity of research in supply chain management significant number of research focused on forward supply chain management by neglecting one of the most important part of supply chain that is reverse supply chain management, which complete supply chain management as closed loop. Large numbers of prior research consider only one variable at a time to see performance of forward or reverse supply chain on organizational performance. However, supply chain performance is the function of different combination of variables. Therefore, this paper review the effects of transportation, inventory management, facility location and information sharing in closed loop supply chain practices on organization performance.

Firms undertake efforts to compete along multiple fronts. First, they integrate internally in order to prepare a cohesive organizational response and to ready the ground for external integration. They then seek to integrate with both customers and suppliers which can increase the breadth and depth of resource endowments. Internal and external integration are posited to improve manufacturing related competitive capability. This study examines whether internal integration and external integration impact manufacturing related competitive capability. The findings indicate significant positive effects of internal integration on both supplier and customer integration. Each supply chain integration dimension has a significant direct effect on competitive capability. Testing for mediation effects indicates that customer integration and supplier integration partially mediate the effects of internal integration on competitive capability.

This study investigates cross-border collaboration between beef organisations in Australia and Singapore. It aims to identify factors impacting trust and technology diffusion by gauging gaps between expected importance and perceived performance rating of the factors. The research presents results of a survey comprising 69 beef organisations from Australia and Singapore. The research identifies critical gaps using two methods of analysis; validity analysis and performance gap analysis. Each method comprises two types of tests. The WarpPLS software is used to perform the validity analysis. Results indicate gaps in level of responsiveness. The research concludes that the success of cross-border collaboration between organisations in both Australia and Singapore can be better achieved through the establishment of information exchange relationships, rather than through the use of technology alone, and by ensuring compatibility between business partners.

Managers today need access to opportunities and insights that enable their firm to achieve a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Supply chain initiatives (e.g., integration and flexibility) are of interest because of their proven benefits. This research examines information sharing, in conjunction with supply chain integration and flexibility, to determine their impact on competitive advantage for small-scale manufacturing firms in India. Our findings indicate that supply chain integration has a significant impact on supply chain flexibility, however not in the direction hypothesized. Unfortunately the other hypothesized relationships (information systems to supply chain flexibility and supply chain flexibility to competitive advantage) did not manifest. We will use these results as the impetus for further research in this area.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the strategy used by German Mittelstand companies to achieve a profitable business in China. It explores how those firms seek to reduce their risk of entry into this market. Design/methodology/approach – Survey data were gathered over the phone from individuals in the companies who were identified as knowledgeable contacts. Their responses were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Findings – German Mittelstand firms that hire Chinese nationals in China obtain market knowledge and a higher return on investment than others. German managers’ efforts to understand the Chinese cultural norms increased the firm’s unwillingness to share information with others. This was probably because their concern about protecting their competitive secrets increased, so they shared less information with suppliers, which decreased their return on investment. Research limitations/implications – First, the small sample size limited the analysis. Second, there was low inter-rater reliability on multiple items, so these responses could not be analyzed. There is a need to further validate the survey, and obtain a larger sample to analyze alternative models. Practical implications – This suggests to the practitioner that while it may be relatively easy to start a manufacturing business in China, it requires great effort to manage their risk of losing corporate secrets to their competitors in China. Originality/value – This paper provides a unique set of data from practicing managers about the risks and gains from doing business in China. This data can be of use to both researchers and to practitioners and it provides a foundation to examine how the risk of losing proprietary knowledge to Chinese competitors affects business.

The study surveyed executives of a major food retailer in India and explored their perspectives on supply chain management practices, competitive advantage and firm performance; to assess the importance accorded to application of business intelligence (BI) in their operations. Nine dimensions for SCM practices and four dimensions for competitive advantage are identified which are found to strongly relate to each other. The dimensions of SCM also strongly relate to firm performance. Though information sharing with suppliers and their inclusion in strategic decision-making emerge as key dimensions of SCM, their impact on competitive advantage is perceived to be insignificant by retailers.
