Abstract

An annotated list of the Orthoptera (Insecta) species described by Alphonse Pictet (alone, and with Henri de Saussure) with an account of the primary type material present in the Museum d'histoire naturelle in Geneva. - Pictet described 193 species or subspecies, most of them in collaboration with Saussure. The names are listed alphabetically, and the location of the type material (if known) and the current nomenclatural combination are given. When there is primary type material in the Geneva Natural History Museum (MHNG) the sex, label data and condition of the specimens is given, along with their location within the collection.

INTRODUCTION
Alphonse Pictet (1838-1903) came from a family with strong links to the
Geneva Natural History Museum (MHNG). His father, François-Jules Pictet (1809-
1872), was professor of Zoology in Geneva for nearly thirty years and can be consi -
dered the “godfather” of the MHNG, while his brother Edouard Pictet (1835-1879)
made some important contributions to the Museum’s Neuroptera collections (Hollier,
2007). In his studies of the Orthoptera Alphonse Pictet collaborated with Henri de
Saussure (1829-1905), another of François-Jules Pictet’s pupils and one of the leading
authorities on the Orthopteroid insects at that time. Four papers (Pictet 1888; Pictet &
Saussure, 1887, 1891, 1892) dealt primarily with material in the Museum or Saussure’s
collections (the latter were officially donated to the MHNG in 1903, but the distinction
between the two collections was not always made clear in the literature before that).
Their collaboration on the first Orthoptera volume of the Biologia Centrali-American
(BCA) (Saussure & Pictet, 1897, 1898) was a very different project. The BCA was an
encyclopedia of the natural history of Mexico and Central America published in 215
parts in London by the editors Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin (of the
British Museum (Natural History)). The work was largely based on material collected
specifically for the project by naturalists such as Herbert H. Smith (1851-1919), who
went on to become curator of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (Philadelphia,
USA), and George C. Champion (1851-1927) who also acted as managing editor for

the series. Unless otherwise stated in the description, the assumption is that the type
material of the species described in the BCA is in the Natural History Museum in
London (BMNH).
The MHNG collection was revised by Saussure, and his successor Johann Carl
(see Hollier, 2010), and the material has been studied by many specialists, so that it is
not always possible to tell who attached type labels to the specimens. The Neotropical
material was examined by Carlos Carbonell (Montivedeo, Uruguay), who labelled
many specimens as holotypes or “hololectoypes” although many of these have not
been officially designated. Poitr Naskrecki (Harvard, USA) examined and photo -
graphed many of the Tettigonioidea types and put the images on OSF.
Pictet described 193 species, mainly in collaboration with Saussure. Type
material of 158 of these has been identified in the collection of the Geneva Natural
History Museum (MHNG). Presumed types of two further species have been on loan
from the MHNG collections since the 1970s. Type material of 65 species is in the
BMNH (in some cases syntypes of a given species occur in both collections). Pictet
and Saussure did not designate holotypes, and did not normally label type material as
such, and some of the specimens labelled as syntypes may be holotypes by monotypy.
Some unavailable names are attributed to Pictet in the literature and these are
treated at the end of the catalogue.
ARRANGEMENT AND FORMAT
The species are listed alphabetically. The format for each is:
species name Author, work: page [Original generic placement].
Type locality (as given in the original descrition). Type series.
Number of specimens. Specimen: “Label data” [format of label]. Following the
recommendations of Ohl & Oswald (2004) the condition of each specimen is noted,
although minor damage to the tips of the antennae or wing margins is not enumerated.
Other comments. Location of material in the MHNG main Orthoptera collection.
Currently valid binomen of taxon (according to OSF).
The abbreviation OSF refers to Orthoptera Species File Online (Eades & Otte,
2010).

2010” [handwritten on red paper]. Specimen set with wings spread; most of both an-
tennae, the right front and middle legs and both hind legs are missing. The locality
labels suggest that these specimens arrived in the MHNG collection when Saussure
and Pictet were preparing the first Orthoptera volume of the Biologia Centrali-
Americana (Saussure & Pictet 1898), meaning that they probably arrived after the
publication of the description. This impression is reinforced by the fact that the loca -
lity given in the description is only “l’Amérique centrale” rather than something more
specific. However, in the BCA (Saussure & Pictet, 1898) the only localities mentioned
are Chiriqui and Buguba in Panama, and Redtenbacher (1891: 342) refers to specimens
of this species from Chiriqui in the collection of Brunner von Wattenwyl, showing that
Champion’s material (it being unlikely that any other collector would have visited this
particular site at the time) was in Europe at around the time of publication. The
specimens in the MHNG collection are therefore possibly syntypes; if not, the where -
abouts of the type material is unknown. Images on OSF. Box F1.

excisum Pictet, 1888: 26-27, fig. 9 [Typophyllum].
Cayenne (Bar). More than one .
There are no specimens standing under this name in the MHNG even though
Vignon (1931) states that he saw more than one specimen (only characters were
mentioned in the original description). It is probable that the syntypes are among the
specimens of Typophyllum trapeziforme (Stoll, 1787) in the MHNG collection (box
E30), which are also from Cayenne (the type locality of T. excisum), but it is not
possible to identify them. The specimen in the Muséum National d’histoire naturelle
(MNHN) in Paris referred to on OSF is that mentioned by Vignon (1931: 122) and not
a type.
A junior synonym of Typophyllum trapeziforme (Stoll, 1787).

left wings folded; most of the left antenna and the entire right antenna are missing, as
are both front legs, the tarsi of the left middle leg and the tibia and tarsi of the right
middle leg. The thorax is badly damaged, and the head and prothorax is separated from
the rest of the body, the whole being supported on a piece of cork secured on the ori-

label in the insect box has the locality “Indes orient.” handwritten in the lower left
corner. The specimen is in poor condition, having lost the antennae and all of the legs
except the right hind femur and tibia, and part of a leg glued to the left side of the
thorax. There are holes in the top and bottom of the thorax left by a previous pin. The
current generic placement was questioned by Johns (1997: 133). It is not clear whether
the specimen is from Asia, as is stated in the description and on the species name label
in the insect box, or from Southern Africa as the label on the specimen pin indicates.

genicularis Saussure & Pictet 1897: 301-302 [Hemiudeopsylla].
Mexico, Cuidad in Durango 8100 ft. (Forrer). Unspecified number of .
Although OSF states that the specimen in the BMNH is the holotype, the
MHNG collections contain a single hind femur labelled “Hemiudeopsylla geniculatus
P. et Ss, Fimur! [sic]” [handwritten on green paper], the label being apparently contem-
poraneous with the name labels on the other specimens in the insect box. It is not clear
if this is part of the BMNH specimen or part of a second syntype. Box O9.
Ceuthophilus genicularis (Saussure & Pictet 1897).
genicularis Pictet & Saussure, 1892: 24, fig. 16 [Phyllozelus].
Patria? Unspecified number of .
One syntype with labels: “Phyllozelus genicularis P. et Sauss.” [handwritten
on yellow paper]; “Oviscapte large et court” [handwritten on white paper]; “Phyl -
lozelus genicularis P. & S., det. C. de Jong 1938, Lectotype” [determination and
“Lectotype” handwritten on white printed card]. The species name label in the insect
box has the locality “Asia merid?” handwritten in the lower left corner. Specimen set
with wings spread, the wings being rather tattered; the left antenna, two tarsal segments
of the left front leg, the right front leg, two tarsal segments of both middle legs, the last
tarsal segment of the left hind leg and the right hind leg are missing. The abdomen is
much damaged, and has lost the end, which might explain why the specimen is referred
to as on OSF. No formal lectotype designation appears to have been published by de
Jong. Images on OSF. Box E8.

written on whitish paper]; “15” [handwritten on white paper]; “Salomona goedeffroyi
Pict.” [handwritten on lilac paper]; “Syntype of S. godeffroyi Pictet?, Hollier 2010”
[typewritten on white card]. Specimen set with wings folded; the antennae, right
middle leg and the tibia and tarsi of the left hind leg are lost. The right front leg and
left middle leg are detached and secured on the original pin. The abdomen has been
eviscerated and stuffed, presumably at the time of capture. The locality label suggests
that this is not part of the type series, but the material was acquired at the same time as
the syntypes. The collection also contains two more and two juveniles which may
belong to the type series. Part of the type series of S. sigma Redtenbacher, 1891 is
stated to be in the MHNG in the original description, but no specimens are labelled as
such (the latter species having being placed in synonymy with S. godefrroyi). Images
on OSF. Box F19.

found, assuming that when the original description gave the type locality this meant
Colombia or Venezuela (Carbonell in litt.). It is possible however, that “Nouvelle
Grenade” was less precisely defined by Pictet & Saussure at the time of the description
than it was by Roberts & Carbonell and that this Andean specimen is a syntype. Images

UNAVAILABLE NAMES
Several unavailable names associated with Pictet appear in catalogues, appa-
rently due to confusion between the citation of names and authors in the original pu-
blications and the act of description resulting in homonyms.
Mimetica brunneri Saussure & Pictet (1898: 453) was given as a replacement
name for “M. mortuifolia Brunner, 1895”, but in that publication Brunner refers expli-
citly to M. mortuifolia Pictet, 1888 (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1895: 256). M. brunneri
(which is now considered a junior synonym of M. mortuifolia Pictet), was clearly an
unnecessary new name, and the material seen by Brunner, including the specimen
referred to as the holotype on OSF which is now in the Naturhistorisches Museum in
Vienna (NHMW), has no type status.
Hemiudeopsylla californiana Saussure & Pictet (1897: 302) was listed by Kirby
(1906: 130) as a species “nec. Scudder” despite the fact that the reference in the
Saussure & Pictet is explicitly to H. californiana (Scudder, 1862). H. californiana
Saussure & Pictet is currently considered a junior synonym of Pristoceuthophilus
celatus (Scudder, 1894) but was actually a misidentification, and the name is
unavailable.
J. HOLLIER

Kirby (1906: 346) lists Meroncidius rosalia Pictet, 1888 as a junior synonym of
Diophanes salvifolia (Lichtenstein, 1798) but Pictet explicitly cited the species as “M.
rosalia Stoll”, based on plate 7 figures 23 and 24 in Stoll (no exact reference given),
and the name M. rosalia Pictet is unavailable. Pictet’s material has not been located,
but may be amongst the specimens currently in the collection as Diophanes perspi-
cillatus Stoll, 1813.
Kirby (1906: 353) gave Cycloptera reticulata as a replacement name for C.
auranti folia Pictet, 1888 on the grounds that this was a junior homonym of C. auran-
tifolia (Stoll, 1813). In the text, however, Pictet explicitly refers to C. aurantifolia Stoll
and the name C. aurantifolia Pictet is thus unavailable. Vignon (1931: 161) designated
a specimen seen by Pictet (in box E31 of the MHNG collection) as the holotype of
Cycloptera reticulata Kirby, 1906.

In this contribution to the study of chevron crickets, we focus on several taxa of the subfamily/tribe Lutosinae/ini. Historical background was made on the classification of this group. Lutosa is redescribed, defining the generic and specific limits, thus providing a key for identifying the species based on males and another based on females. In addition, two new species are described: Lutosa morsellii n. sp. and Lutosa quaresmai n. sp.; L. marginalis, L. cubaensis and L. goeldiana were redescribed, and L. surda n. syn., was synonymized under L. paranaensis. Other species previously allocated in Lutosa are relocated as follows: Lutosa obliqua and L. azteca are again synonymized under Licodia pallipes; Lutosa inermis is moved back to Dolichochaeta (D. inermis comb. rev.). The genus Neolutosa is studied, grouping three species N. emarginata (with new specimens that rule out its presence in Central America), N. aculeata (with additional specimens, erroneously identified in the past as L. brasiliensis) and N. horribilis n. comb. (this species is transferred from Lutosa). A key to species is also provided. Records for Apotetamenus clipeatus are reported for the Brazilian Amazon and the states of Mato Grosso and São Paulo (Brazil). Finally, the classification of the family Anostostomatidae and the subfamily / tribe Lutosinae/nini is discussed.

Diponthus Stål, one of the most diversified and widely distributed Romaleinae genera, is endemic to southern South America. This colorful grasshopper genus is placed within Romaleini and currently includes 16 valid species from a total of 22 nominal ones, most of them only known from their original descriptions. The aims of this study were to propose a morphology-based phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships among the species of Diponthus, and to conduct a taxonomic revision, including the description of four previously unknown species. Parsimony analysis of 79 morphological characters strongly recovered the monophyly of genus Diponthus, and Gurneyacris as its sister group. Internal clades within Diponthus were supported by external morphology and coloration patterns, while characters from male genitalia were shown to be more useful for species differentiation. Based on the results of the taxonomic review, Diponthus is constituted by 16 valid species, with the following nomenclatural changes proposed: Diponthus nigroconspersus (Stål) is considered a valid name; D. invidus Carl and D. bilineatus Rehn are synonymized under D. virgatus (Gerstaecker); Diponthus clarazianus Pictet & Saussure is synonymized under D. cribratus (Serville); D. paulista Rehn is synonymized under D. porphyreus (Gerstaecker); D. maculiferus (Walker) is synonymized under D. electus (Serville). New names are proposed for four undescribed species from Bolivia (D. colorbellus sp. nov. and D. dilatatus sp. nov.), Argentina (D. paranaensis sp. nov.) and Brazil (D. salvadorii sp. nov.).

A key challenge of natural history museums across the globe is to make collections accessible to researchers and the public alike. Through advances in digitization, databasing, online data curation and long-term storage, it is now possible to give access to the type material housed in museums, which represent the most precious specimens in collections. Here, we have generated a fully illustrated online catalogue of all primary and secondary Diptera types housed in the Muséum d’histoire naturelle of Geneva (MHNG). High-resolution habitus photographs of all type specimens and their labels are available on a digital repository, and an exhaustive list of this type material is provided. The MHNG collection holds 152 holotypes and 2025 paratypes with Empididae, Lauxaniidae, Sphaeroceridae and Tephritidae being the most represented families. Although the current Diptera collection is relatively recent, the ca. 150000 specimens and associated type material are important resources for future taxonomic and systematic studies.

The recent return of this loan allowed the identification of potential type specimens of eleven species. These are listed, the label data is given and the condition of the specimens summarised.
... In Mexico there are two species in the genus Lutosa and they are in a doubtful status. L. azteca (Saussure & Pictet, 1897) was originally described as Glaphyrosoma and we have no data on current type location (Hollier, 2011), The syntype may be lost. L. obliqua (Walker, 1869) was originally described in Licodia Walker, 1869, without locality data but Karny (1937) wrote that the species was found in Mexico (although this statement was made without examining specimens other than the syntype which is deposited in London). ...

We describe three new species in the genus Glaphyrosoma: G. magnaproctalis n. sp., G. franciscoasturiasi n. sp. and G. hectorcentenoi n. sp. We provide new data on the distribution of G. karnyi, G. beretka and G. anderi in Guatemala. We propose G. bruneri as nomen dubium and we define the status of specimens recorded as G. gracile in Guatemala and Costa Rica. We also include a species distribution map of this genus with the information available to us up to date and a key to species.
... Besides, the specimen from Bahia Blanca has another label "Diponthus pycnostictus P. et S.", this female was selected as the hololectotype by Carlos S. Carbonell, and it is here designated as such. Hollier (2011) indicates that besides the materials mentioned before, there is also a male with labels: "Buenos Ayres, Février 1868"; "Prionacris pycnostichus Pict. et Sss.", that might also be a syntype. ...

The South American genus Diponthus Stål comprises species with cryptic and probably aposematic colorations. It belongs to a group of grasshoppers, tribe Romaleini, where color polymorphism is common. Morphometric techniques were used to clarify the taxonomic limits and status of six nominal species of Diponthus: D. permistus (Serville), D. argentinus Pictet & Saussure, D. pycnostictus Pictet & Saussure, D. communis Bruner, D. pictus (Bolivar) and D. schulzi Bruner. Results of cluster (CA) and principal component (PCA) analyses showed that D. pycnostictus can be defined by a unique combination of characters, while the remaining nominal species represent different color morphs of a single taxon, here recognized as D. argentinus. We also used statistical analyses to examine whether the discontinuities in body coloration of the polymorphic D. argentinus could be explained by geographic variation. The distribution patterns of body coloration of D. argentinus do not appear to be restricted to any particular biogeographic region and no character correlation resulted with latitude. Furthermore, the results show that color morphs display high levels of overlap across the geographic range, as well as intra-population variation. We conclude that in D. argentinus body coloration varies considerably across the geographic distribution range but without any noticeable color gradient correlated with the latitude. According to the phylogenetic species concept (PSC) we consider D. pycnostictus Pictet & Saussure and D. argentinus Pictet & Saussure as valid species. The following synonymies are proposed under D. argentinus: D. communis Bruner n. syn., D. schulzi Bruner n. syn., D. pictus (Bolivar) n. syn., and D. permistus (Serville) n. syn. We declare D. permistus (Serville) a nomen oblitum.

The New World Jerusalem crickets currently consist of 4 genera: Stenopelmatus Burmeister, 1838, with 33 named entities; Ammopelmatus Tinkham, 1965, with 2 described species; Viscainopelmatus Tinkham, 1970, with 1 described species, and Stenopelmatopterus Gorochov, 1988, with 3 described species. We redefine the generic boundaries of these 4 genera, synonymize Stenopelmatopterus under Stenopelmatus, and synonymize Viscainopelmatus under Ammopelmatus. We then discuss, and illustrate, all the types of the species of Stenopelmatus, all of which only occur south of the United States’ border. We recognize as valid the following 5 described Mexican and Central American species: S. ater, S. piceiventris, S. sartorianus, S. talpa, and S. typhlops. We declare the following 13 described Mexican and Central American Stenopelmatus taxa as nomen dubium: S. calcaratus, S. erythromelus, S. guatemalae, S. histrio, S. lessonae, S. lycosoides, S. mexicanus, S. minor, S. nieti, S. sallei, S. sumichrasti, S. toltecus, and S. vicinus. We designate a neotype for S. talpa and lectotypes for S. ater, S. guatemalae, S. histrio, S. lessonae, S. mexicanus, S. minor, S. nieti, S. sallei, S. sumichrasti, and S. toltecus. We assign a type locality for S. piceiventris. We concur with the previous synonymy of S. politus under S. sartorianus. We describe 14 new species of Stenopelmatus from Mexico, Honduras and Ecuador, based on a combination of adult morphology, DNA, calling song drumming pattern, distribution, and karyotype: S. chiapas sp. nov., S. cusuco sp. nov., S. diezmilpies sp. nov., S. durango sp. nov., S. ecuadorensis sp. nov., S. faulkneri sp. nov., S. honduras sp. nov., S. hondurasito sp. nov., S. mineraldelmonte sp. nov., S. nuevoleon sp. nov., S. perote sp. nov., S. saltillo sp. nov., S. sanfelipe sp. nov., and S. zimapan sp. nov. We transfer the following 16 described United States taxa, plus S. cephalotes from the “west coast of North America”, from Stenopelmatus to Ammopelmatus: A. cahuilaensis, A. californicus, A. cephalotes, A. fasciatus, A. fuscus, A. hydrocephalus, A. intermedius, A. irregularis, A. longispinus, A. mescaleroensis, A. monahansensis, A. navajo, A. nigrocapitatus, A. oculatus, A. pictus, and A. terrenus, along with the Mexican taxon A. comanchus: these species will be discussed in a subsequent paper (Weissman et al. in prep). We believe that all new Jerusalem cricket species descriptions should include, at a minimum, calling drum (most important) and DNA information.

The ensiferan family Anostostomatidae, formerly included in the Stenopelmatidae, or called the Henicidae or Mimnermidae is diagnosed and a world checklist of species is presented. Some longstanding nomenclatural problems are resolved through examination of most of the types and many new synonyms at the generic and species levels are presented. Two new monospecific genera are eastablished for species in Australia and New Zealand: Transaevum laudatum and Motuweta isolata

The present paper refers to the acridoids that have been heretofore included in the genera Agriacris, Camposia and Elaeochlora. The latter two generic names are junior synonyms of Agriacris, which thus becomes the only genus available for the whole assemblage. The presence of two well defined groups of species within these insects is here recognized by the erection of the new genus Staleochlora for one of them. Agriacris s. str. comprises nine valid species, one of them with three subspecies, two of them here described as new. Thirteen additional specific names are here treated as junior synonyms, and other two considered to be nomina dubia. Staleochlora includes nine species, one of them with two subspecies and other with three; two species and three subspecies are here described as new. All species are redescribed and illustrated. A table and a figure are given for the separation of the genera, and also keys for the separation of species in both of them. Geographical distribution is indicated in the treatment of each species and in three maps. Species distribution is also related to biogeographic provinces of the Neotropical Region, as defined by Cabrera and Willink (1973). Out of 83 papers containing references to the insects studied, 42 have been selected as the most important and are included in the reference list at the end.

This paper reviews the shield-backed katydids (Tettigoniinae, formerly the Decticinae, see Rentz (1979, 1985) for discussion) of southern Africa. Types of all taxa, except one, have been examined and extensive generic reassignments and species' synonymies are made. The tettigoniine faunas of southern Africa, Australia, and South America are analysed and discussed. It is concluded that the faunas of South America and Australia are closer to one another than to that of southern Africa, although the three are related. They are attributed to an ancient Gondwanaland fauna which is reflected in the known distribution of the southern African genera. These are shown to be related to the North American genus Neduba and its relative Aglaothorax. Discussion of analogus structures is presented and Aglaothorax is brought out of synonymy with Neduba on the basis of morphological and cytological evidence. Seventeen species are described, in seven genera; three genera are described as new. Arytropteris Herman is restricted to three species: A. basalis (Walker) is used for A. semiaeneus of authors. Thyreonotus semiaeneus Serville is transferred to a new genus, Alfredectes. A. excisa Peringuey is a new synonym of Arytropteris granulithorax Peringuey. A. pondo is described as a new species. Zuludectes is described to include one species, Z. modestus Peringuey, formerly in Arytropteris. Anarytropteris Uvarov includes two described species: A. fallax Uvarov and A. chirinda, sp. nov., both from Zimbabwe; four specimens are listed as potentially representing distinct species. Namaquadectes is described to include a single species, N. irroratus (Peringuey), known only from the female holotype. Ceresia includes a single species, C. pulchripes Peringuey, represented by the male holotype. Thoracistus Pictet is shown to have three distinct species-groups: the arboreus Group contains a single new species, T. arboreus; the viridifer Group contains T. viridifer (Walker) which includes Arytropteris intricata Peringuey, A. plebeia Peringuey as new synonyms; the peringueyi Group includes T. peringueyi Pictet and T. aureoportalis, T. semeniphagus, T. viridicrus, T. thyraeus, T. jambila which are all described as new. A species represented by females is noted but not described.Alfredectes, gen. nov., includes the earliest described species, Thyreonotus semiaeneus Serville, from the Cape of Good Hope; A. browni, sp. nov., is described and a single species represented by a female is listed but not described. Keys and tables are presented for all species and all taxonomically important structures are illustrated. Karyotypes are presented for Thoracistus aureoportalis, T. semeniphagus, T. viridicrus, T. viridifer.

The family Tettigoniidae consists of the long-horned grasshoppers with a more or less distinct sword-shaped ovipositor and with a distinct auditory organ at the proximal part of the fore tibiae. Handlirsch unites into this family 14 subfamilies of which the Pterophyllinae only are considered here. Concerning the name Tettigoniidae the opinions were diverging, but in recent literature this name is generally used. In the 10th edition of Linné's Systema Naturae (1758) a number of species of the genus Gryllus are united into the subgenus Tettigonia. This subgenus was considered as a genus by Fabricius and it would have been logical if he had kept the Linnean name Tettigonia for it. Fabricius, however, mixed up the Linnean names and called the here-mentioned genus: Locusta. This name has for many years been considered as the correct name of the genus, and Tettigonia L. was used for another group of insects. Stål (1874) placed Tettigonia L. into the synonymy of Locusta F. as both names refer to the same group of species. Linné (1758), however, had given the name Locusta to a group of short-horned grasshoppers; moreover Tettigonia L. has priority over Locusta F. as it had been established earlier. Thus the name Tettigonia L. is the eldest in the group and therefore should be considered to be the type genus and the name of the family should be derived from it. As to the type species of the genus Tettigonia L. Karny (1907) gives a survey of all Linnean species in the genus Gryllus, Tettigonia, and shows that successively all species have been placed into other (new) genera, leaving viridissima L. as the only species in the genus Locusta F. (Stål

A revision of the genus Zoniopoda is made on the basis of the material of several museums and also on that collected by the author. The genus as known at present is a rather small one, with nine valid species described from 1831 to the present, and an additional species described here. Among the names in the literature for species of this genus, three are here considered to be junior synonyms. This generic name has also been used for three species now placed in other genera. Species in this genus are of medium size, and fairly similar in form. They are divided in this text into two groups: the species in one of them have very distinctive colors and color-patterns, while those in the other are all rather uniformly colored green, and can be told apart only by some rather slight differences. All known species of this genus live in the southern part of South America, east of the Andes. Among the romaleine genera, Zoniopoda seems most closely related to Chariacris Walker 1870 and Diponthus Stål 1860, from which, however, it can be readily separated by some evident characters. All the species of the genus are illustrated, both in habitus and in some taxonomically important details.

Nomenclatural and taxonomic data are provided for 28 nominal taxa (7 Raphidioptera, 21 Megaloptera) whose primary type(s) [in one case a paralectotype] are contained in the holdings of the Berlin Museum. Explicit lectotype designations are made for the following four taxa: (Raphidioptera: Raphidiidae) Rhaphidia affinis Schneider; (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) A canthacorydalis kolbei van der Weele, Corydalus laevicornis Stitz, and Corydalus soror Hagen. Lectotype selections for four nominal taxa whose syntypical series occur (at least in part) in the Berlin Museum are deferred for future researchers. The unique name-bearing type specimens of the remaining 20 nominal taxa have been validly fixed by the actions of previous authors or by automatic provisions of the code.
