Electrochemical noise (EN) corrosion monitoring technique has become an interesting method in corrosion measurement systems. Detection and analysis of early stages of localized corrosion is the best advantage of this testing technique. Signal analyses and understanding the obtained current and potential transients are limited. In this work, the pitting corrosion behavior of 304 and 316 stainless steel in ferric chloride solution was investigated by electrochemical noise measurement technique. Results obtained from current and potential transients were in correlation with surface analysis performed by scanning electron microscopy. Tests were conducted at three different temperatures, 40, 50, and 60°C. Results showed that 304 stainless steel exhibited general corrosion associated with pitting corrosion, this effect increased as temperature increased. 316 stainless steel showed only pitting corrosion with no general corrosion, the effect of temperature on 316 was less.

Introduction
Electrochemical noise is the fluctuation in electrode potential and current in some electrochemical
environment. Electrochemical noise analysis is a unique technique in electrochemical corrosion analysis, and
this is because it can be performed for open circuit conditions, does not need external perturbations of the
system, and, the spontaneous changes in current and voltages are sufficiently small. Electrochemical noise
data acquisition requires simple experimental setup compared with in situ testing.
First studies of electrochemical noise focused on the relation between potential, current, and corrosion rate (1-
3). These approaches were suitable in localized corrosion studies, such as stress corrosion cracking and
pitting. However, qualitative information can be given by potential or current monitoring. Later studies were
directed for monitoring the potential and coupling current from two coupled identical electrodes (4-11).
Quantitative corrosion rate studies can be made according to these studies. Noise resistance (Rn), which is the
ratio of the standard deviations of the potential noise E) and coupling current change 1) is the most
important step in this method:

Chen and Skerry (8) and Eden et al. (6) suggested that Rn should be related to the polarization resistance (Rp)
that was commonly determined by linear polarization techniques or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
(EIS).
The aim of this work is to study the effect of temperature on corrosion behaviour of 304 and 316 stainless
steel in 0.6 M ferric chloride solution.
2. Materials and methods
Series of identical electrodes made of stainless steel sheets of S30400 and S31600 stainless steel electrodes are used to
evaluate pitting corrosion in high chloride solution. Chemical composition of stainless steel sheets used is given in Table
1.

Samples were cut to 2mm x 7mm x 7mm size, soldered to a copper wire and embedded into epoxy resin ground to 1000
grit using emery papers, proper chemical cleaning by acetone was performed to specimen surface. The exposure area of
samples was 0.5 cm2. Ferric chloride solution was prepared and used as the testing solution. Three-electrode

electrochemical cell system [12, 13] (two identical working electrodes 1 and 2, and a reference electrode) saturated
calomel electrode was used as the reference electrode; the two identical electrodes were connected to ZRA (zero
resistance ammeter) [14, 15], the experimental setup is shown in Figure1.

Electrochemical current and potential noises of 304 and 316 stainless steel specimens were simultaneously in
0.6M ferric chloride solution, all noise measurements were performed at 40 C, 50 C, and 60 C
temperatures.
3. Results and discussion
The influence of temperature on both 304 and 316 stainless steel samples tested in 0.6 M ferric chloride
solution is shown in Figures (2-9).

Figures (2-5) showing the potential and current transients of 304 stainless steel specimens which were
simultaneously measured as a function of time using zero resistance ammeter (ZRA), in 0.6 M ferric chloride
solution at 40C, 50C, and 60 C. Fluctuations in potential and current transients with some passivity are
shown for samples tested at 40C (Figures 2 and 5), fluctuations in current increased with higher amplitudes
and a shift in potential to the active direction was noticed for those samples tested at higher temperatures
50C, and 60C (Figure 3, Figure4, and Figure 5). Fluctuations in potential and current are considered to be
associated with passive film breakdown and metastable pits initiation. A deep metastable pit can form a stable
pit because of the corrosive solution that prevents re-passivation (16). Sato (17) suggested that the corrosion
potential of passive metal decreases as a metastable pit grows entering the active state as a stable localized
corrosion. Small fluctuations in current and potential transients for 316 stainless steel samples were noticed at
all testing temperatures leading to less pit initiation and less passive to active state transition (18-22). Figure 6
shows the recorded current time series of UNS316 stainless steel tested at 40 C, some transients were
observed in both directions, these transients are associated to localized corrosion; pitting. Figures 7 and 8
show the current time series of 316 grade stainless steel tested at 50 C and 60 C respectively, in both Figures
there are transients recorded in both sides, transients being similar for the three testing temperatures, these
transients were revealing to pitting occurring on stainless steel surface. Potential time series of 316 stainless
steel tested at all temperatures (40C, 50C, 60C) is shown in Figure 9. Small fluctuations in transients are
shown compared to UNS304 grade stainless steel. The effect of temperature on this type of stainless steel
being less compared to 304, this is shown in current and potential transients.

The scanning electron micrographs of stainless steel surfaces are in agreement with electrochemical noise
measurements obtained. Figures (10-12) show the SEM micrograph of 304 stainless steel tested at all testing
temperatures, pitting with general corrosion are seen as an etching effect of surfaces, the microstructure is
being developed due to etching effect. 316 stainless steel showed only pitting behaviour with no general
corrosion (etching effect) this is shown in Figures (13-15). Discussion is very poor and merits to be developed
adequately and insert Figs in corresponding part.

Conclusion
1- Electrochemical noise measurements showed double effect of ferric chloride solution on 304 stainless steel at all
temperatures.
2- Current and potential transients increased with temperature revealing pitting and general corrosion effect on 304.
3- General corrosion on 304 was in the form of etching due to etching effect of ferric chloride solution on stainless steel.
4- Current and potential noise transients were less in 316 stainless steel at all temperatures compared to 304.
5- The effect of testing solution on 316 stainless steel was as pitting corrosion with no noticeable general corrosion.
6- The effect of testing temperature on 316 was negligible.

The use of electrochemical noise (EN) technique for the investigation and monitoring of corrosion has allowed many interesting advances in the corrosion science in recent years. A special advantage of EN measurements includes the possibility to detect and analyses the early stages of localized corrosion. However, the understanding of the electrochemical information included in the EN signal is actually very limited. This work shows the results obtained from EN measurements for different materials that exhibit pitting corrosion. The obtained transients in potential and current time, correlates with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) surface analysis. Electrochemical measurements were made at different exposure times in order to obtain any correlation. The used materials were austenitic 316 stainless steel and 2205 duplex alloy, immersed in ferric chloride (FeCl3) and sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolytes. SEM analysis shows that the observed transients in the time series really correspond to the activity of pit nucleation developed on the surface of the electrodes.

The spectral analysis of the correlated current and potential noise data record (1024 points) obtained from the stressed 316 stainless steel (SS) electrode undergoing stable pitting corrosion by using Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) are discussed in this paper. The power spectral density (PSD) data for current as well as potential were obtained using a Hanning window at different values of the coefficients (M) of the MEM to understand the influence of M on the shape of the PSD plots, roll-off slopes and spectral noise resistance at zero frequency (R°SN). The data was also analysed using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and plotted along with the MEM data for comparison. The PSD plots obtained by the MEM retained their smooth character up to MEM = 40 became extremely noisy after M = 100. Spectral analysis using the MEM above M = 100 (about 10% of the data points in the record) was not much useful in extracting other parameters. The roll-off slopes were not true indicators of the corrosion mechanism. The optimum values of R°SN obtained by averaging the first 10 points at the lowest frequencies were found to be consistent till M = 200. The R°SN values obtained by similar methods using FFT were found to be comparable to the ones obtained by the MEM.

Electrochemical noise (EN) measurements have been carried out on several corroding systems, utilizing the technique of simultaneous recording of current and voltage fluctuations, and calculating the frequency dependent spectral noise impedance R{sub sn}(f) as the square root of the ratio of the power spectral densities (PSD) of the voltage to current noise. The results are compared with the theoretical predictions stemming from an analysis of the technique, which is presented in the preceding paper. It is shown that, over a quite large range of conditions, R{sub sn}, coincides with the impedance modulus of the electrodes under study. From the relationship between R{sub sn} and the noise resistance R{sub n}, which is usually obtained calculating the ratio of the standard deviations of the voltage and current fluctuations, it is shown that the latter quantity can be equal to the zero frequency limit of the impedance only if certain conditions are satisfied.

Degradation of 13 polymer coating systems on steel exposed to natural (NS) and artificial seawater (AS) was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical noise analysis (ENA). Marine test sites were Port Hueneme, California, and Key West, Florida. An approach was developed to obtain electrochemical impedance and noise data from test sites via modem from the laboratory. A multiplexer was used to collect data at the test sites for the different systems. Impedance data were collected once a week, while noise data were measured twice a week. Potential and current noise data were determined simultaneously. Representative data from exposure to NS and AS for 7 months are presented for four coating systems. The long-term objective of this project is to determine the impact of microorganisms on degradation of protective properties of polymer coatings on steel during exposure to NS.

Current and potential fluctuations (electrochemical noise [EN]) between two nominally identical carbon steel electrodes were recorded in a solution of sodium phosphate (NaâPOâ) at different concentrations. After passivation was reached, pitting was induced by addition of chlorides. Data were collected with different sampling rates. Linear polarization resistances (LPR) also were measured. Electrochemical signals were transposed in the frequency domains using the fast Fourier transform. Statistical parameters from the signals in the time and in the frequency domains were compared with corrosion rates (V{sub c}) as measured by LPR. Noise resistance (R{sub n}) also was calculated. From standard deviation (Ï) values of the current and potential noises, pitting attack was revealed at its onset. Good correlation between data from the different techniques was found. R{sub n} gave values proportional to the polarization resistance (R{sub p}). The issue of how sampling rate can affect EN data collection also was addressed.

A corrosion monitoring system using electrochemical noise measurements and their numerical analysis was developed. Electrochemical noise was measured in a freely corroding system containing three identical metal electrodes. A voltage signal generated by the first pair of electrodes and a current signal generated by the second pair were measured, and the data were fed into a computer. A mathematical model that included signal processing and pattern recognition was implemented using computer software. Analysis of the electrochemical noise enabled determination of the corrosion rate and the corrosion type. The reliability of the corrosion monitoring system was tested against various reference methods (visual inspection, scanning electron microscopy, current-vs-potential curves, and electrical resistance). Tests were performed on steel and aluminum in aqueous solutions of various pH and conductivity values.

Electrochemical noise and impedance data for polymer-coated steel exposed to seawater have been analyzed in the time and frequency domains. Good agreement between spectral noise plots and impedance spectra was observed provided that accurate collection of current noise data was not affected by instrument limitations. The frequency range in which valid spectral noise plots for polymer-coated steel can be obtained is quite limited compared to impedance plots. The noise resistance R{sub n} equals the polarization resistance R{sub p} only if both the potential and current power spectral density plots have the same slope resulting in frequency independent spectral noise plots. This means that the impedance spectra have to display a dc limit in the frequency region in which noise data are collected, i.e., the sampling frequency f{sub s} for collection of noise data must be less than the breakpoint frequency f{sub b} related to the dc limit of the impedance spectrum. In general, it has to be concluded that for protective coatings for which impedance spectra are capacitive between 1 Hz and 1 mHz, the frequency region in which meaningful noise data can be collected R{sub n} is a function of the measurement bandwidth. Therefore interpretation of R{sub n} in terms of a single coating property is not possible.

Potential and current noise data have been collected for pure iron foils which were exposed to 0.5N NaCl which was aerated, deaerated, or aerated with NaNO2 added as inhibitor. Data were obtained at the beginning of each hour over a 24 h period. The noise data were displayed as power spectral density plots or as the rms values of potential (deltaV) and current (deltaI). The potential noise data seem to be affected by fluctuations of mass transport and did not agree with the known corrosion behavior of the systems under investigation. However, good agreement was observed for the current noise data. For the noise resistance R(n) = deltaV/deltaI similar values as for the polarization resistance R(p) determined with EIS at the end of the tests were obtained. The pit index defined by others as PI = deltaI/I(mean), where I(mean) is the mean current in a noise measurement, did not provide meaningful information. The experimental data obtained in this investigation have been compared with those reported previously by Lumsden et al.

Effects of precipitation of alpha prime () phase on the localized corrosion of Fe–25Cr–7Ni–3Mo–0.25N duplex stainless steel (DSS) were examined by electrochemical noise measurements in ferric chloride solution. Power spectral density (PSD) and corrosion admittance (A c) spectrum as a measure of the severity of localized corrosion were used to analyze quantitatively the electrochemical noise of the alloy with aging. Electrochemical potential and current noises of the alloy in passive state were found to increase with aging at 475 • C, as represented by the increase in PSD. This suggests that passive film was degraded due to the formation of Cr-depleted region around Cr-rich precipitates that was formed on a nanometer scale within ferrite grains during the aging. In the corrosion admittance spectrum, the deviation from zero A c value increased with aging. In addition, the number of positive A c corresponding to a state of uniform corrosion was higher than that of negative A c for the over-aged alloy. Numerous micro-galvanic cells formed on a nanometer scale between Cr-rich precipitate and neighboring Fe-rich phase in ferrite grains led to a selective-uniform dissolution of ferrite in the aged alloy accompanied with pitting corrosion.

Chloride pitting of iron group metals at noble potentials proceeds in the polishing state dissolution, provided that metal chloride in the pit solution is maintained above a critical concentration. It ceases to progress by pit repassivation if the pit is smaller than a critical size, or transforms into the active state pitting if the pit size is greater. The boundary potential between the polishing state and the active state pitting may be represented by the passivation-depassivation potential in the pit solution of the critical chloride concentration. Crevice corrosion is characterized by the crevice protection potential, at which the hydrogen ion concentration in the crevice solution is equivalent to pHpd—the passivation-depassivation pH of the crevice metal. It continues to corrode at more noble potentials than the protection potential, where the crevice solution is more acidic than pHpd, but is inhibited in the less acidic crevice solution at less noble potentials.
