... The link between logistics-related research and theory has been vague, leading several scholars (e.g. Defee, Williams & Randall 2010;Mentzer & Kahn 1995;Schmenner & Swink 1998;Stock 1997) to advocate for the increased use of theory in logistics and supply chain management research. Although these calls may have induced some theory-oriented research (Frankel et al. 2008), the gap still remains because most research does not specify the theory used and the degree to which it is utilised (Defee et al. 2010). ...
... Defee et al. (2010) reinforce this position by noting that minimal research addresses the theoretical aspects of logistics and supply chain management. Mentzer and Kahn (1995) concur by asserting that the literature on logistics tends to shy away from developing, testing and/or applying theory. To determine the extent as well as the prevalence of theory utilisation in logistics research, Stock (1997), Spens and Kovács (2006), Defee et al. (2010) and Karatas-Cetin and Denktas-Sakar (2013) evaluated top logistics and supply chain management journals. ...
... Defee et al. (2010) add that it is still possible for other theoretical categories to significantly contribute to logistics and supply chain management and potentially lay the foundation for future cohesive theory. The importance of these journals has been substantiated as the most significant contributions in the field of logistics in the work of Mentzer and Kahn (1995), Stock (1997) and Spens and Kovács (2006). It is important to note the overlap in sample years between the studies of Karatas-Cetin and Denktas-Sakar (2013) and Defee et al. (2010). ...

Background: Contemporary economic systems are characterised by the increasing volumes and flow of goods. This attribute highlights the importance of logistics wherein one of the key focus areas pertains to the movement and storage of freight at different geographical scales. Objective: In the light of the importance of theory in research as well as the significance of geographical location in logistics processes, the objective of the paper is to analyse the extent, scope and gaps of theory utilisation in logistics-related research. Method: The paper is based on a systematic literature review approach that encompassed 243 sources. The searches were conducted on the Internet database platforms using keywords such as logistics, logistics activities, geography of logistics activities, supply chain management, logistics theories and freight models. Results: The relationship between logistics research and theory is ambiguous in that the majority of the research does not explicitly incorporate theory. Logistics particularly benefits from theory originating from other disciplines, such as economics, strategic management and marketing; however, the use of theories that originate from human geography has been limited in logistics research. Conclusion: The drive to understand the movement and storage of freight at different scales has relevance to human geography, particularly the subdisciplines of transport geography and economic geography. It is therefore recommended that logistics research consider the theoretical frameworks originating from human geography.

... Ever since business logistics became a scientific discipline, the use of tangible artefacts such as transport cost, delivery time and inventory turnover has been influenced by physical science in making non-living phenomena its study objects (Mentzer and Kahn, 1995). As logistics and transport are predominantly a practice-oriented and solution- welcomed other concepts such as causality of behaviour activities and social science researches (Porter, 1985). ...

As trade and transport networks were taking shape through a series of development, modern transport practices such as multimodal transport service and logistics service value has significantly affected current transport systems. Inevitably, collaborative relationships between shippers and operators have received considerable attention in determining the effectiveness of Multimodal Transport. The term of'relationship' in the context of transport has always been a critical pillar in strategic business environment. However, in the Asian context, especially in China or other Asian countries like Thailand, the term 'relationship' is an ambiguous business concept, which exceeds more than just elements of long-term business relationship or short- term transactions found in the Western literature. The term 'Guartxi briefly translated as personal connections/relationships, is deeply embedded in the mindset of most Asian people and in every aspect of their personal and organisational interactions. The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the impact of Multimodal Transport Service Value and Relationships on shippers' Business Performance, evidence from Thai shippers' perspective. In this study, an evaluation of the causal relationships among Multimodal Transport Service (MTS), Logistics Service Value (LSV), Relationship Quality (RQ) and Guanxi (GX) on shippers' Business Performance (BP) is examined. A research model is developed to validate these measurement models and to rigorously test the relationships in the form of structural model. This study uses Structure Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyse data collected from Thai shippers listed in the Thai National Shippers' Council (TNSC). The result of the structural model has shown that both MTS and LSV has significant impact on BP through RQ, and GX has shown support on all of its related hypothesised paths. In summary, this thesis empirically develops a structural model to prove the significance of MTS, LSV, RQ and GX on Business Performance in a Multimodal Transport environment.
... These insights provide a new perspective on the use of mixed methods research, which has yet to be explored within the LSCM domain, particularly the "why" and "how" to integrate mixed methods research. Mentzer and Kahn (1995), Mangan et al. (2004), Sachan and Datta (2005), Frankel et al. (2005), Spens and Kov acs (2006) and Golicic and Davis (2012) have all noted that the majority of LSCM research has been traditionally populated by quantitative research viewed through a positivist lens. For example, over 60% of papers published in three major LSCM journals between 1999 and 2003 used research methods associated with that paradigm, i.e. surveys, simulation and mathematical modelling (Sachan and Datta, 2005). ...
... However, there is also evidence that the use of methods associated with the interpretivist paradigm was increasing in LSCM research, e.g. 16% of papers used a case study approach, up from 3% in Mentzer and Kahn's (1995) study of papers published between 1978 and 1993. Since then, a summary of mixed methods approaches in LSCM journals has been lacking, i.e. there has been a twentyyear gap, although there have been papers published discussing individual, or discrete, and distinct methods. ...

Purpose Mixed methods research is useful to enhance theoretical and practical research contributions. However, single methods have predominated much logistics and supply chain management (LSCM) research. This paper presents a review of mixed methods research across ten years in LSCM to determine their usage, identify benefits and inhibitors, and provide suggestions for LSCM researchers to realise the benefits from using mixed methods. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a mixed methods approach through a quantitative analysis of methods used in six leading LSCM journals, an e-mail survey of mixed methods article authors during the review period, and four published case studies that used mixed methods. Findings Only 144 (ten percent) of all empirical articles were published using mixed methods during the review period. A range of benefits and inhibitors regarding mixed methods adoption were found. Suggestions for LSCM authors include research training in mixed methods use and developing a project-specific research design due to the specificity and complexity associated with mixed methods research. Originality/value LSCM is at a critical juncture, shaped by new contexts, themes and challenges, and would benefit from different research approaches and methods. This paper contributes to the LSCM domain through analysing the current state, benefits and inhibitors of mixed methods research in LSCM journals to provide a renewed call to action and guidelines for mixed methods LSCM research, and suggesting research design adaptation to enable agile and resilient research when investigating rapidly changing and complex phenomena.
... In addition, the findings were matched with those of previous studies conducted in Dar es Salaam to see if issues and practices were still the same or if there have been any changes since the last study was conducted in 2015. Previous researchers in the field of SCM (Mentzer and Kahn, 1995;Boyer and Swink, 2008;Marquardt, Golicic and Davis, 2011;Golicic and Davis, 2012) argue that SCM studies usually adopt quantitative methods instead of qualitative because of the complexity and a lack of understanding of how to use mixed methods. Golicic and Davis (2012) pointed out that mixed methods are essential to fully addressing the complexity of SCM issues. ...
... The research method adopted in this study is new in the context of SCM. The majority of SCM studies by Mentzer and Kahn (1995), Boyer and Swink (2008), Marquardt, Golicic and Davis (2011) and Golicic and Davis (2012) have focused on quantitative methods and completely ignored mixed methods due to a lack of understanding and the complexity of SCM-related issues. Through adopting a mixed methodology, the researcher has been able to adequately meet the objectives of the study. ...

Advancements in technology have exerted pressure on organisations to improve their businesses in order to provide customers with goods and services of a high quality at a lower cost. This has prompted firms to find the means of meeting their customer’s needs. One way of doing so is through the implementation of supply chain management (SCM) practices. SCM improves the performance of the firms through a reduction in costs, additionally enhancing productivity, reducing lead times and managing inventories, all of which enables the firms to deliver what the customers expect. Although the benefits of SCM have been documented by various researchers, the majority of studies have focused on large enterprises, whereas small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been neglected in contrast. Little research has been conducted on SMEs and SCMs. Furthermore, with regard to the food manufacturing sector in Tanzania, previous studies have focused on the entire industry while others have focused on raw agricultural products only. This research aimed to access the SCM implementation in food manufacturing SMEs in Dar es Salaam and to identify the challenges related to providing recommendations on how to effectively implement SCM to improve SME performance. A mixed-method approach was employed in this study; 13 interviews were conducted and 180 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. The data collected was analysed using NVIVO 12 and SPSS 25. The findings reveal that the implementation of SCM practices in food manufacturing SMEs in Dar es Salaam is still in the developmental stage. SMEs are unable to implement SCM effectively into their current practices due to poor supplier relationships, low knowledge regarding SCM, poor management, poor investment in technology and financial constraints. To overcome these issues, measures such as support from the government, the integration of SMEs, investment in technology, financial aid and SCM training are recommended. This work contributes to the literature on SCM practices and SMEs. This is where limited research has been conducted, especially in developing countries. For practitioners in Tanzania and other developing nations, this study confirms that SCM practices enhance SME performance and this study can thus serve as a reference when seeking to understand SCM-related problems and how to overcome them.

Groundwater is essential in the management of water resources globally. The water quality of aquifers is affected by climate change and population growth, aspects that can be addressed with stable isotope analysis. This study aims to carry out an analysis of the scientific information related to groundwater and stable isotopes (GSI) using scientific databases (Scopus and Web of Science) to evaluate the intellectual structure of the subject and the emerging research lines. The methodology includes: (i) topic search selection, (ii) tools in databases processing, (iii) bibliometric analysis, and (iv) review by clustering technique. The results showed that the scientific production of GSI can be addressed through three evolution periods: I (1969–1990), II (1991–2005), and III (2006–2021). Periods I and II did not significantly contribute to publications because, in the past, most of the student’s thesis (M.Sc. and Ph.D) consisted of writing a report that summarizes their works. Therefore, the researcher was not obliged to publish their results in a professional journal. Finally, the third period showed exponential growth, representing 82.34% of the total publications in this theme because, in the last years, institutions require at least one scientific article depending on the country and university, in order to graduate with an M.Sc. and PhD. Finally, the contribution of this study is reflected in the recognition of new research lines and their applicability by the knowledge of recharge sources, environmental aspects, infiltration, knowledge of the aquifer-meteoric water system, and groundwater-superficial water interaction. These aspects offer the possibility of analyzing integrated water resources management at the watershed or river-aquifer systems level.

To acquire householder's perceptions of current home delivery services and prepare the input data for the modelling work, a surveying method was adopted because it was believed the best way to reach a wide cross-section of householders and identify their experiences on the home delivery services. According to Mentzer and Kahn (1995), the postal questionnaire survey was one of the most frequently used methods in logistics research (54.3%), with computer simulations and interviews the next two mostly used methods. Xing (2006) developed a quality evaluation system for home delivery services based on 423 survey responses from 3000 households in Edinburgh. ...

p>Home shopping and delivery services offer customers the opportunity to purchase goods and receive deliveries to their home rather than having to travel to high-street stores. Given the promising future of home shopping and delivery market, many efforts have been devoted to solving the problems currently encountered by service providers and customers which include unsecured deliveries, first-time delivery failures, demands for faster delivery, and product returns. Of major concern in this research are the implications of home delivery failures when there is nobody in to receive the package at the delivery address. Collection/delivery point (CDP) systems are one of the emerging solutions to mitigate failed home deliveries, in which CDPs are used as alternative addresses to receive the packages. Particularly focused on the small package home shopping market, this research has identified and modelled the existing home delivery and CDP methods. The carrier and customers travelling distance incurred in each delivery method was compared. It was then possible to quantify whether the CDP method is an economic solution to improve home delivery operations and the environment. A six-step research method was then developed to achieve those research objectives. Firstly, the existing and emerging home delivery methods were identified from the literature. The second stage consisted of conducting two home delivery surveys in Winchester and West Sussex, respectively. The surveys were'used to identify the home shopping and delivery characteristics of customers. In the third research step, the</p

... Various authors have also directed attention to questions associated with the research paradigm. Some, noting how the positivist paradigm dominates the discipline, have highlighted the availability of alternatives, and reflected upon what their use might mean for SCM research (e. g., Frankel et al., 2005;Hald and Spring 2023;Mentzer and Kahn, 1995;Sachan and Datta, 2005). They have highlighted how positivism and interpretivism differ, for instance, in terms of the answers they provide to ontological, epistemological, and axiological questions (e.g., Darby et al., 2019). ...

In the face of climate change (CC), “business as usual” is futile. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events (e.g., hurricanes, floods, droughts, and heatwaves) have hurt lives, displaced communities, destroyed logistics networks, disrupted the flow of goods and services, and caused delays, capacity failures, and immense costs. This study presents a strategic approach we term “Climate-Change Resilient, Sustainable Supply Chain Risk Management” (CCR-SSCRM) to address CC risks in supply chain management (SCM) pervading today’s business world. This approach ensures supply chain sustainability by balancing the quadruple bottom line pillars of economy, environment, society, and culture. A sustainable supply chain analytics perspective was employed to support these goals, along with a systematic literature network analysis of 699 publications (2003–2022) from the SCOPUS database. The analysis revealed a growing interest in CC and supply chain risk management, emphasizing the need for CCR-SSCRM as a theoretical guiding framework. The findings and recommendations may help to guide researchers, policymakers, and businesses. We provide insights on constructing and managing sustainable SCs that account for the accelerating impacts of CC, emphasizing the importance of a proactive and comprehensive approach to supply chain risk management in the face of CC. We then offer directions for future research on CCR-SSCRM and conclude by underlining the urgency of interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of climate considerations into SCM for enhanced resilience and sustainability.

Background: This paper is the first-ever discussion of sport logistics as an intersection of the academic disciplines of logistics and sport management. Methods: It reviews past literature and states that logistics in sport is widely overlooked in academic literature. It illustrates the importance and pervasive nature of logistics in the sport industry and questions how sport logistics can be positioned at the interface of logistics and sport management science. Both disciplines are contrasted under the common lens of Porter's value chain. Results: Operations, organization and marketing are identified along with economics and strategy as areas of sport management (highly) involved with logistics. Sport logistics is defined as a research area dealing with storage and transportation issues in sport organizations. Conclusions: Based on a case example from practice, athlete equipment logistics, the authors elaborate on the unique characteristics of managing logistics in sport, e.g., low competition, personal relationships and high demand predictability. They call for a broader discourse on sport logistics in academia.
... These models deliver a course of action (i.e., an 'optimal' policy) based on information and context (Albright & Winston, 2009). This approach is widely used in humanitarian logistics (Altay & Green, 2006;Galindo & Batta, 2013), as it can model real objects (Klein & Hirschheim, 1987) and explain and predict an objective, tangible and fragmentable reality (Mentzer & Kahn, 1995). ...

When managing crises and disasters, decision-makers face high uncertainty levels, disrupted supply chains, and damaged infrastructure. This complicates delivering resources that are essential for the survival of the victims. Flexible and adaptable supply networks are needed to ensure a consistent flow of relief to the areas affected by disasters. Intermodality is a valuable approach when infrastructure is damaged, as it allows the use of different delivery modes to reach demand areas. Nevertheless, involving different transportation modes has an impact on the environment. Looking at the importance of helping victims and considering the environmental impact of humanitarian operations for long-term sustainability, intermodality and carbon emission reduction measures can be an interesting combination. This area, however, is currently understudied. This article introduces a two-stage stochastic formulation to fill that gap. The model addresses facility location, resource allocation, and intermodal relief distribution considering carbon emission reduction in facilities, intermodal activities, and distribution. The formulation minimises costs and the level of shortage of relief. The model is tested using a case study in Sinaloa, Mexico, to investigate the impact of intermodality and carbon emission reduction measures on costs and shortage of relief for disaster victims. The findings confirm that the model proposed allows for the diversification of transportation modes and reduces carbon emissions whilst achieving a good level of performance in both metrics. The comparison with a benchmark model without intermodality and carbon reduction measures suggests that the formulation can increase flexibility and reduce the level of CO2 emissions whilst maintaining high satisfaction rates.

Climate change has influenced the demand for natural resources, such as water, energy, and food. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus and climate change through a review and analysis of scientific publications to discern trends towards sustainability. The methodology adopted in this study involved i) selection, processing, and merging of databases; ii) a bibliometric analysis; and iii) a systematic literature review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methods. The findings of this study reflect a strong relationship between the WEF nexus and sustainability influenced by climate change, which highlights the need to balance natural resource availability, growing population demand, and productive activities in a given territory. The bibliometric analysis performed in this study included interactions between the WEF nexus and climate change by considering 1,220 scientific publications from the Scopus and Web of Science databases that covered policy, sustainability, management, and governance aspects. Based on five keyword clusters of the WEF nexus, climate change, and sustainability, it also extracted the research directions from the systematic literature review of 104 documents. This study summarises the interest in the WEF nexus and highlights that the utilization and management of the natural resources of a region so as to balance the WEF nexus and climate change is among the most significant challenges of the 21st century.

It also provides greater visibility and control, allowing e-commerce businesses to react quickly and efficiently to changes in demand or supply. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of digitalization on trade logistics in e-commerce, emphasizing the significance of smart logistics for the e-commerce industry. We reviewed 288 articles published in the last decade in the Scopus database to assess the maturity of research in this area. For researchers, this study provides a better understanding of smart e-commerce logistics and identifies research gaps in the literature. For e-commerce professionals, it can help them adopt the latest technological trends in their logistics. Through a systematic literature review and network analysis approach, the study has contributed by identifying 5 clusters related to ICT application fields in e-commerce and 5 clusters related to important ICT enablers in smart logistics. We also identified several research gaps and areas for future study, including the underutilization of computer vision technology and the need for further research on product quality inspection and accessibility for people with disabilities. Additionally, we suggest exploring the power of deep learning to solve Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP) and optimizing sensing data volume for minimizing costs associated with data storage and transfer. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in smart logistics for e-commerce and serves as a guide for future research in this field.

Logistics scheduling, specifically that of order and delivery schedules, is an essential part of a firm and the supply chain. The objective of this paper was to identify any gaps in academic and professional literature regarding the logistics scheduling of perishable biopharmaceuticals. A literature review of the logistics scheduling of general products, perishable medical supplies, and flu vaccines was conducted in order to verify any potential gaps in the literature. The approach used to study this issue was based on the grounded theory concept of qualitative research, and by then focusing on an extensive review of scheduling, ordering, and delivery in these industries. A gap in the literature was identified. The identification of this gap in academic and professional literature regarding logistics of perishable biopharmaceuticals provides a contribution to the body of knowledge. Suggested future research is identified. Finally, research propositions are included to begin to address the research gaps.
... Here our target was to develop an action research-based performance measurement system (Schmidberger et al., 2009). As already pointed out by Dunn et al. (1993) and Mentzer and Kahn (1995), especially the field of logistics requires more action research approaches as the present logistics and supply problems are of complex as well as distant nature and are influenced by real-world mediators and moderators. Such an action research approach is especially beneficial to cover and discover all relevant perspectives on the investigated research objects and their corresponding dynamic networks under real-world problems (Alvesson, 1996). ...

Shortly after the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, governments around the world enacted new border regulations for people and goods, some of which are still in effect 2 years later. Modern supply chains, which often span the entire world, have shown to be vulnerable to such changes. Additionally, trade wars often restrict import and export capacities or lead to increased costs. This in turn might trigger managers to increase, where possible, local production. Such new capacities were designed to be temporary, but a public debate to configure less globalized supply chains has already started. This configuration of supply chains can be understood as the supply chain structure (the supply chain units and the links between them) and the key attributes of the supply chain. These key attributes can be divided into functional attributes, such as the procurement and the distribution type, and into structural attributes, such as the topography of a supply chain and the integration and coordination. The chapter analyses how supply chains might be reconfigured in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. It uses the framework of functional and structural attributes as a basis for the analysis. This analysis will directly contribute to the ongoing debate about the configuration of tomorrow’s supply chains.

Augmented Reality (AR) has gained attention for online retailers as it offers customers higher telepresence and provides a unique customer experience. Using the case of Sephora Virtual Artist, this research aims to understand how AR channels affect customer purchase decisions compared to other channels, particularly in beauty products. Sephora used AR through Sephora Virtual Artist to advance its other customer channels, and we compared it with its traditional websites and offline stores. A survey was conducted on 200 female respondents in Indonesia. This study used partial least squares (PLS) to find that product information and telepresence on AR can positively affect customer purchase decisions. Surprisingly, no significant difference in purchase decisions compared to two other purchase channels, i.e., traditional websites and offline stores. This study highlights that female customer tend to focus more on the products they want to purchase rather than the technology and channel of buying.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information systems (GIS) are two digital system innovations advantageously applied in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) sectors. GIS and BIM integration development is indispensable in building and infrastructure management. This integration promises several benefits for the operational phase of buildings and infrastructures. However, it faces challenges in data transformation and collaboration. This study proposes a framework and model for a web-based building management platform. The framework is developed by transforming BIM data into the GIS environment using the latest technology from ArcGIS. It allows data-sharing and collaboration among stakeholders, help build management, and is valuable for decision-making. The stakeholders, who do not need a BIM-GIS expert, could virtually see the report and updates of this building model every time.
... Therefore, a bibliometric analysis of the literature on a specific topic goes beyond a mere compilation of scientific documents and their contributions to theory and practice. It provides critical added value by summarizing the literature on the topic studied and identifying gaps and emerging paths for future research, the main aim being to contribute to advancing scientific knowledge on the topic (Mentzer and Kahn, 1995). This is achieved through identifying patterns of sub-topics, authors, scientific journals, citations, co-citations, keywords and others (Prasad and Tata, 2005;Treinta et al., 2014); conceptual contents (Seuring and Mu, 2008); and dimensions of analysis (Pedro et al., 2018). ...

Purpose: The last decade has seen growth in the number of businesswomen/mothers, known in the literature as mumpreneurs. As this is a recent, fragmented topic, no systematic literature review (SLR) has been carried out, justifying the objective defined here: scientific and bibliometric mapping of mumpreneurs. Design/methodology/approach: To fulfil this aim, this SLR was supported by bibliometrics (performance analysis and scientific mapping) and the use of VosViewer software. A survey was conducted in Web of Science (WoS), and several documents were obtained dated between 2011and 2021. Findings: The results of this study show the existence of two clusters: (1) Dilemma - motherhood and mumpreneurs, and (2) The rise of the mumpreneur concept. The evidence obtained showed it is very important to address entrepreneurship from the perspective of entrepreneur-mothers, as at this stage of their lives these women often find it difficult to reach a harmonious balance between work and family. Practical implications: This study contributes to developing research in the area of entrepreneurship in general, and mumpreneurship in particular, through mapping the research done on the latter topic, as well as identifying its main contributions to theory and practice. Undoubtedly, due to the increasingly competitive pressures and the stride of varying demands, volatility and disturbance have become the standard in today’s global markets. The spread of Covid-19 is a prime example of that. Supply chain managers are urged to rethink their competitive strategies to make use of Big Data Analytics (BDA), due to the increasing uncertainty in both demand and supply side, the competition among the supply chain partners and the need to identify ways to offer personalised products and services. With many supply chain executives recognising the need of ‘improving with data’, supply chain businesses need to equip themselves with sophisticated BDA methods/techniques to create valuable insights from big data, thus, enhancing the decision-making process and optimising the efficiency of Supply Chain Operations (SCO). This paper proposes the building blocks of a theoretical framework for understanding the impact of BDA on SCO. The framework is based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on BDA and SCO, underpinned by Task-Technology-Fit theory and Institutional Theory. The paper contributes to the literature by building a platform for future work on investigating factors driving and inhibiting BDA impact on SCO. © 2022 The Author(s). ... Literature review is "a systematic, explicit and reproducible method to investigate, assess and understand the existing-related discipline" (Seuring & Müller, 2008;Winter & Knemeyer, 2013). This method is the leading contributor and input to research advancement and is deliberated "to provide a historical perspective of the respective research area and an in-depth account for independent research endeavors" (Mentzer & Kahn, 1995). Another research also emphasizes that literature reviews generally focus on two main goals: first is to sum up total research in a particular field through the identification of multiple patterns, themes, and issues; secondly, they help to discover the theoretical knowledge of the field (Meredith, 1993), and thereby may support in the development or advancement of theory (Harland et al., 2006). ...

While the review of the previous literature contributed to providing substantive justification for the study (Mentzer and Kahn, 1995), case research contributed to strengthening the research motivation highlighting its real-world relevance, designing the study and validating if the insights were logical and applicable in the real world (Sodhi and Tang, 2014). Then, a multi-methodological approach was adopted (Choi et al., 2016), combining data obtained through exploratory case study research with empirically grounded analytical modeling (Sodhi and Tang, 2014). ...

Purpose The postponement boundary problem entails that duties and cross-border trade complexity can lead companies to geographically postpone operations to downstream global facilities. The present study aims at investigating the problem to provide insights into the drivers behind the choice of different postponement strategies for global food supply chains. Design/methodology/approach A single case study was conducted considering an Italian company exporting olive oil toward the United States. Two global postponement strategies, previously formalized in the literature, were tailored for food supply chains. A multi-methodological approach was adopted, combining data obtained through exploratory case research with empirically grounded analytical modeling. A sensitivity analysis was also performed, to investigate outcomes related to the considered problem when changing key parameters. Findings Bulky and heavy packing materials account for a big percentage of finished products' volume and weight, and this can deeply affect strategies' cost-effectiveness. Postponing packaging operations could allow for taking advantage of lower tariffs levied on bulk goods, contributing to significantly lower duties to be paid. However, important trade-offs could arise related to the required investments, and the fiscal regulatory frameworks must be carefully examined. Originality/value This study offers an empirical investigation of the postponement boundary problem, which is largely unexplored in the current literature. It also tackles an understudied empirical context as global food supply chains. It summarizes the drivers behind and explores the costs related to the implementation of different strategies, offering an original quantitative approach that could support practitioners' decision-making. Lastly, it formalizes five propositions that could pave the way for further research inquiries.
... A renewed emphasis on the study of responsiveness may help overcome our very limited theoretical centering and grounding of L&SCM research. Our growing awareness of this issue motivated us to address the calls for theory building within SCM from the SCM, logistics, distribution, marketing channels, and management literatures (see Flint et al. 2005;Melnyk & Handfield, 1998;Mentzer & Kahn, 1995;Min et al., 2019). This approach integrates multiple elements of existing L&SCM research into a logical framework that treats the supply chain as a specific discipline striving for a specific goal. ...

The emergence of logistics and supply chain management as a fully mature business discipline may depend on the development of foundational supply chain management perspectives embracing a focus on responsiveness. Hundreds of papers in our field conceptualize responsiveness and related concepts in disconnected ways ignoring this potentially valuable foundation for investigating supply chain strategic and logistical adjustments. Although these extant studies highlight many important issues related to responsiveness, their conceptualizations and nomological networks vary considerably. This diffuse focus seriously hinders efforts to create an overarching theoretical perspective in a dynamic field without one. The result is a masking of promising research directions that could help define the discipline. Drawing from the organizational economics, logistics, and supply chain management literatures, we begin the argument that responsiveness—realized through logistics and supply chain management—has strong potential as our defined foundational perspective. All roads to superior performance depend upon supply chain responsiveness to the environment, supply chain members, stakeholders, and the consumer. Our proposed Responsiveness View of supply chain management supports the exploration of how supply chains compete successfully amidst disruption and change, helping to define a young, theoretically distinct, research domain.

... The literature review is the basis for the initiation of in-depth and empirical analyses. It find their place is also in the broadly understood social sciences as an accepted research method (Mentzer, Kahn, 1995;Easterby-Smith et al., 2002), at the same time being an integral part of all research and assisting in the search for theoretical structuring of the research area, in this case creating typologies of KPI's for sustainable supply chains. An auxiliary method is contextual analysis, which allows a broad definition of content as a technique for drawing conclusions by objectively and systematically identifying specific characteristics of messages (Holsti, 1969). ...

Nowadays, cities are a source of benefits and problems related to social, economic and environmental aspects. There is no doubt that the benefits of urbanization are drawing more and more people to live in urban centers. However, such a situation favors the creation of many threats to various socio-economic spheres. Smart cities and advanced information and communication technologies are now becoming the research area of many scientists. Attempts to define and characterize the Smart City concept show how many disciplines are interested in addressing this topic. However, research on Smart City and its components lacks a clear definition of the directions of scientific research supported by practical ICT solutions, taking into account the correlation of scientific research in the field of Smart City. To this end, the authors carried out a detailed structured review of scientific articles to provide a synthetic insight into the characteristics of current smart city research. The article presents a bibliometric analysis showing the correlations of the studied phenomena in economic practice. The presentation of the author's visualization of the use of ICT in the Smart City concept based on a review of scientific articles with the use of an advanced analysis of the interdependence of identified research areas in the field of Smart City, will allow to determine the relationship between the variables and their directions and scenarios for future research. The authors also made a schematic classification of the areas of the analyzed systematic units - taxa (keywords and areas of coexistence). The VOS Viewer and CitNet Explorer software used enriched the bibliometric analysis by showing the degree of correlation of the studied areas by means of visualization of network connection maps.

This paper presents a thorough analysis of the evolving landscape of supply chain (SC) collaboration research using a Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) approach. Comprising two parts, the study integrates bibliometric and content analyses to offer a holistic perspective on this pivotal aspect of supply chain management (SCM). In the first part, based on 629 articles, the study examines quantitative bibliometric aspects. The bibliometric analysis uncovers prominent authors, major contributing journals, key terms, the literature’s evolution, and co-citation clusters. It highlights themes including information sharing, performance, sustainability, Structural Equation Modeling, and SC collaboration practices. The second part applies content analysis to 198 selected articles. It reveals diverse reasons for SC collaboration, including enhancing performance, adapting to volatile contexts, promoting sustainability, fostering innovation, building trust, and advancing technology adoption. It also identifies barriers from the organizational, interorganizational, informational and communication, technological, financial, cultural, sectoral, contextual, and regulatory perspectives. The exploration of collaboration types—upstream, downstream, horizontal, or global—and their evolution, is coupled with key definitions, article types, and employed theories. The paper concludes by proposing a comprehensive framework to guide SC collaboration. The theoretical, methodological, and managerial contributions of this article lie in the insights it provides into the evolving dimensions of SC collaboration, enhancing both academic and practical understanding. The proposed framework serves as valuable guidance for organizations and establishes a robust foundation for further exploration in this field.

Given the increasing uncertainty in global supply chains, the consideration of resilience alongside sustainability has become significantly more important in the area of manufacturing strategy. However, the operations and supply chain management literature has witnessed a debate regarding the potential trade-off between these two concepts. This study aims to delve into the similarities and differences between sustainability and resilience, exploring their theoretical background. A systematic literature network analysis was conducted on sustainability and resilience literature using CIMO (Context-Intervention-Mechanisms-Outcome) logic for the data evaluation. The results show overlaps but also a partly different focus in the development of sustainability and resilience based on the applied theories, the focus on the performance problem, and the positioning within the manufacturing strategy. This study contributes to the current discussion on the potential interplay between sustainability and resilience in operations and supply chain management. The developed framework provides guidance for integrating dual demands of sustainability and resilience within manufacturing strategy research and practice.

Over the last two decades, women's entrepreneurship has drawn attention because of its noteworthy socioeconomic impact in every field including tourism industry. However, despite the well-documented benefits of women's involvement in entrepreneurship, they continue to confront challenges that restrict them from achieving heights. The existing literature mainly discusses the challenges women face in their entrepreneurial journey, and very few studies address the positively changing scenario. Therefore, this chapter explores the shifting and changing scenario in women's entrepreneurship and to identify what challenges have been overcome and what continues to restrict the growth of women's entrepreneurship. The study attempts to present the challenges and enablers that have changed business dynamics for women. The chapter also analyses how women's entrepreneurship has transformed over time and digs deep into the extant literature to understand if the business environments have become conducive for women over generations. The authors follow an inductive approach to achieve the objectives.

The disruptions in international supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the importance of considering risk in supply chain management. Using an action research approach, we examine supply chain risk management at a tier-1 automotive supplier. We focus on the inbound supply risk of this supplier and introduce the new Supplier Risk Tower risk assessment. The Supplier Risk Tower combines vulnerability indices specific to the supply chain, supplier feedback on the current risk situation, and impact assessment from the tier-1’s perspective. What is novel about this approach is that risk is calculated as an absolute number which provides guidance, especially for rare but severe disruptions. This approach also expands the understanding of lean management regarding the raison d’être of buffer stocks in supply chains. Because risks materialize.

Previous research points to an apparent gap between the prescriptive models designed to guide companies in making systematic outsourcing decisions and the practices some companies actually use. While prescriptive models would suggest the predominance of outsourcing decisions are made using top-down, proactive, systematic- and strategic-competence-driven processes, prior researchers observed that actual decisions are often made using local, reactive, ad-hoc, and seemingly limited-strategy-driven processes. This article addresses this inconsistency by presenting a data-driven descriptive model of logistics outsourcing strategy, based on grounded theory research methods, that explores the experiences of logistics professionals. Our findings support the idea that while prescriptive models providing congnitive approaches to logistics outsourcing exist in the literature, in practice both cognitive and experiential search and evaluation are used to make outsourcing decisions. Additionally, we extend the work of de Boer, Gaytan, and Arroyo (2006) by adding personal factors, such as experience and self-interest, and cultural factors, such as organizational values and norms, as inputs to the process.

Outsourcing has become popular in management literature and practice. The way in which it is implemented, however, differs from one organization to another. This makes our understanding of the concept very difficult because outsourcing means different things to different organizations in different situations. One reason for this confusion may be the lack of established theoretical frameworks for evaluating organizations' decisions and their application and impact on logistics. This article applies multiple social science theoretical perspectives to develop a framework within which logistics outsourcing decisions can be examined and evaluated.

Since the day first case was reported in Wuhan, Covid-19 pandemic has been greatly transforming our lives as well as our economic activities. Due to the lockdowns, many businesses closed their doors forever, while some others experienced unpredictable growth. Online retail is among the areas that has seen the greatest growth. Understanding the elements that contribute to success and survival of companies during the pandemic era and utilizing these elements to improve service quality crucial for any business. It is no secret that logistics operations also played and still plays a big role in mitigating the damage dealt by the pandemic. Therefore, logistics service quality is as important as the overall service quality. In this study, the service quality elements that play a role in success are discussed. Then the online retailers operating in Turkey are evaluated on the basis of these service quality elements. For this study a survey was conducted with 160 participants and the data gathered was then analyzed with regression analysis. The results indicate that logistics service quality (LSQ), physical distribution service quality (PDSQ), and response to costumer (RTC) elements play a significant role in ensuring survival and even success of companies during the pandemic.

When companies expand internationally under various pressures or opportunities, they find “logistics barriers” in cross-national logistics. This chapter conceptualizes the field of Cross-National Comparative Logistics (CNCL). Firstly, the areas of logistics to compare is discussed which include the concepts, thoughts and practices. Secondly, the factors causing the difference in “logistics” are discussed, which include the development level, market maturation or economic system, and culture. The operationalization of the factors is further discussed.

This chapter presents a systematic literature review and research agenda regarding key success factors (KSFs) facilitating SME e-commerce in developing countries. Previous studies had mainly pre-adoption when the internet and e-commerce were new. However, SMEs have largely been ignored, and now that attention has turned to post-adoption issues research, which is required in SME and developing country contexts due to the worldwide growth of e-commerce. This chapter comprises a structured literature review using Denyer and Tranfield's context, intervention, mechanisms, and outcome (CIMO) criteria for critical analysis to enable the development of future empirical research areas. The KSFs are considered significant and of concern to stakeholders, including inter alia SMEs and governments to encourage SME growth in e-commerce and positively influence SME and overall business performance to meet customer demand.

The discussion in recent decades about sustainable development issues has given rise to a new accounting dimension: social accounting. Currently, this issue remains an emerging theme. Although there are some studies and literature reviews, none include disclosure of social accounting information or the analysis of research paradigms. This article reviews the research on social accounting disclosure and tries to answer the following research questions: What research streams have been followed? Which theories and research paradigms have been used? The search for articles to be included in the literature review was performed through the Web of Science. The 126 articles obtained were later analyzed using Bibliometrix software. Results expose the growing interest in this theme and identify three distinct research lines (three clusters): Cluster 1—Social accounting disclosures, Cluster 2—Legitimacy vs. disclosure of social accounting, and Cluster 3—Motivations for disclosure of social accounting. The main contribute of this article resides, on the one hand, in the fact that no literature review articles have been found that include the theme of the disclosure of information on social accounting and, on the other hand, the treatment of data has been done with innovative software, an R package for bibliometric and co-citation analysis called Bibliometrix. As well as mapping the literature, another theoretical contribution of this study was identifying the main research approaches used in the studies. Within the paradigmatic plurality of social accounting research, the results suggest that social accounting research can also be critically addressed when addressing the sustainability challenges posed by climate change or carbon emissions, among many other aspects. This study is, to our knowledge, the first bibliometric review done about social accounting information disclosure.
