Abstract

The paper discusses the boundary layer flow of a weak electrically conducting viscoelastic Walters’ liquid B over a nonlinearly stretching sheet subjected to an applied transverse magnetic field, when the liquid far away from the surface is at rest. The stretching is assumed to be a quadratic function of the coordinate along the direction of stretching. An analytical expression is obtained for the stream function and velocity components as a function of the viscoelastic parameter, the Chandrasekhar number and stretching related parameters. The results have possible technological applications in liquid based systems involving stretchable materials.

1. Introduction
Polymer extrusion, drawing of copper wires, continuous stretching of plastic films and artificial
fibers, hot rolling, wire drawing, glass-fiber, metal extrusion, and metal spinning are some of the examples
where the problem of a stretching sheet arises. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows are relevant to many
practical applications in metallurgy industry, such as the cooling of continuous strips and filaments (sheet)
drawn through quiescent liquid, the purification of molten metals from non-metallic inclusions.
Ever since the pioneering works of Sakiadis (1961b), several works have appeared to consider
various aspects of the problem (see Siddheshwar and Mahabaleshwar, 2005 and Rajagopal et al., 1987).
Pavlov (1974) studied the MHD boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting liquid due to a stretching
sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. He neglected the induced magnetic field under the
assumption of a small magnetic Reynolds number. The stability of the solution was analyzed by Takhar et al.
(1989) and it was found that the magnetic field has a stabilizing effect on three-dimensional disturbances of
the Taylor-Görtler type. The core assumption in most of the reported problems is that the stretching is
linearly proportional to the axial distance. This is valid provided the stretching process is delicate and slow,
leading to the assumption of constant rate of stretching. It is not difficult to see that the above assumption is
quite idealistic and impractical. In the strictest sense the stretching has to be nonlinearly proportional to the

axial distance. The current work is a generalization of the classical work of Andersson (1992) for a linear
stretching sheet and presents new results on the problem. In the present paper, as a first step in the general
nonlinear modelling exercise, we make use of a simple quadratic stretching model.
2. Mathematical formulation
We consider a steady, two-dimensional boundary layer flow of an incompressible and electrically
conducting isothermal viscoelastic Walters’ liquid B flow due to a quadratically stretching sheet (see Fig.1).

is applied along the y-axis on the weak electrically conducting
liquid occupying the half space y>0. The magnetic Reynolds number is small and hence the induced
magnetic field is negligible as compared to the applied magnetic field. The Walters’ liquid B is an
approximation for short or rapidly fading memory liquids and is thus an approximation to first order in
elasticity. The liquid is at rest and the motion is effected by pulling the sheet on both ends with equal forces
parallel to the sheet and with a speed u, which varies quadratically with the distance from the slit as

The resulting motion of the otherwise quiescent liquid is thus caused solely by the moving
sheet.

considered in the paper.
As pointed out by Vleggaar (1977) in a polymer processing application involving spinning of
filaments without blowing, laminar boundary layer occurs over a relatively small length of the zone 0.0 - 0.5
m from the die which may be taken as the origin of Fig.1. This is in fact the zone over which the major part
of the stretching takes place. In such a process the initial velocity is low (about 0.3 m/s) but not very low
enough always to assume linear stretching. Thus a good approximation of the velocity of the sheet is

the linear and quadratic stretching terms. We have adopted the quadratic stretching model in our problem.
The intention of the mathematical formulation as above is twofold:
(i). To seek an analytical solution of the linear stretching sheet and
(ii). To consider the effect of mild perturbations on the classical linear stretching sheet problem.

We now discuss the results obtained in the study.
3. Results and discussion
The problem of a flexible sheet undergoing quadratic stretching is investigated for the flow it
generates in its immediate neighbourhood. The stretching sheet is the sole reason for the liquid flow, and
liquid viscoelasticity significantly influences the flow. The flow of the electrically conducting liquid,
inhibited by a transverse magnetic field, is studied with the help of streamline patterns and also the axial and
transverse velocity distributions. The results are analyzed against the background of the classical linear
stretching problem


Figures 7-16, that are three-dimensional plots of the velocity components U(X, Y) and V(X, Y), reveal
more than the conventional two-dimensional projections on the U-Y and V-Y planes. Figure 7 is a plot of the
Crane (1970) profile of the linear stretching problem. One can easily see from the figure that the horizontal
and vertical extent of the dynamics on the stretching sheet increases as we go along axial direction.
Figure 8 brings out the effect of the quadratic stretching of the sheet as well as the viscoelasticity of
the liquid and the magnetic field. Clearly, both the above effects give rise to an extended dynamic region
compared to the linear stretching problem of a Newtonian liquid. Comparing Figs 8 and 9 it is obvious that
the quadratic stretching increases the vertical extent of the dynamic region. Comparing Figs 9 and 10 of

quadratic stretching we find that the effect of viscoelasticity is to initiate lifting of the liquid more closer to
the slit compared to that of a Newtonian liquid. On comparing Figs 8 and 10 we conclude that the effect of
increasing Q is to reduce the dynamic region in the vertical extent and increase the same in the axial
direction.

The transverse velocity profile brings out the fact that quadratic stretching greatly influences the
vertical velocity compared to that in the case of linear stretching. Figure 11 depicts the X - independence of V
while Fig.12 spells out that quadratic stretching induces the X - dependence of the transverse velocity
component V. Figures 13 and 14 explain the nature of the influence of k1 on V for the problem of quadratic
stretching. The influence of k1 on V(X, Y) is similar to its influence on U(X, Y) and the same is demonstrated
by Figs 13 and 14. The influence of quadratic stretching on U(X, Y) and V(X, Y) of a second order liquid
shows that the vertical variation is comparatively less than the axial variation. This is demonstrated in Figs
15 and 16 that depict the axial and transverse velocity profiles for the quadratic stretching sheet problem in a

second-order liquid. The corresponding graphs for a Walters’ liquid B model are Figs 8 and 12. It is clear
that the lifting is initiated closer to the slit in the case of a Walters’ liquid B model compared to the second
order liquid. In the case of the latter the flow is more strongly two-dimensional than in the former case. This
is clearly seen on comparing Figs 12 and 16.

In this article, we propose a mathematical model for the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a non-Newtonian fluid past a porous and nonlinearly stretching sheet. The fluid is assumed to be immersed in a graphene-water nanofluid in the presence of mass transpiration and thermal radiation. A set of suitable similarity transformations are used to reduce the nonlinear partial differential equations system to a nonlinear loosely-coupled ordinary differential equation system. The heat transfer characteristics are studied with two types of boundary conditions, namely the Prescribed Surface Temperature and the Prescribed Surface Heat Flux. The exact solution to the momentum nonlinear ordinary differential equation is obtained by Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method. The temperature equation is solved analytically by converting it to a Gaussian-confluent hypergeometric differential equation. The effects of the porous medium parameter, power of the surface temperature, prescribed heat flux on the velocity, and the temperature field are some of the important findings of this investigation. The current research has its applications in the manufacturing industry, liquid film condensation process, metal spinning etc.

The two‐dimensional mixed convective MHD flow with heat and mass transfer is investigated for its behavior with Dufour and Soret mechanisms over the porous sheet. The copper–alumina (Cu–Al2O3) hybrid nanoparticles are used in the base fluid water. The governing system of partial differential equations is converted into a system of ordinary differential equations via similarity transformations, obtaining the solution for velocity, temperature, and concentration fields in exponential form. The problem is demonstrated in the Darcy–Brinkman model, the impact of included parameters such as Richardson number, magnetic field, and Dufour numbers are studied for the obtained solution with the help of graphs. Increasing the magnetic field decreases both transverse and axial velocity profiles. Increasing the magnetic field and Richardson's number decreases the solution (Al2O3–H2O). Increasing the values magnetic field and Richardson's number decreases both transverse and axial velocity profiles. Increasing the values of the Dufour effect increases the axial and transverse velocity boundary layer. The magnetohydrodynamic hybrid nanofluid flow over porous media works efficiently in liquid cooling and, therefore, has significant applications in industrial heating and cooling systems, solar energy, magnetohydrodynamic flow meters and pumps, manufacturing, regenerative heat exchange, thermal energy storage, solar power collectors, geothermal recovery, and chemical catalytic reactors.

In the present paper, an MHD three-dimensional non-Newtonian fluid flow over a porous stretching/shrinking sheet in the presence of mass transpiration and thermal radiation is examined. This problem mainly focusses on an analytical solution; graphene water is immersed in the flow of a fluid to enhance the thermal efficiency. The given non-linear PDEs are mapped into ODEs via suitable transformations, then the solution is obtained in terms of incomplete gamma function. The momentum equation is analyzed, and to derive the mass transpiration analytically, this mass transpiration is used in the heat transfer analysis and to find the analytical results with a Biot number. Physical significance parameters, including volume fraction, skin friction, mass transpiration, and thermal radiation, can be analyzed with the help of graphical representations. We indicate the unique solution at stretching sheet and multiple solution at shrinking sheet. The physical scenario can be understood with the help of different physical parameters, namely a Biot number, magnetic parameter, inverse Darcy number, Prandtl number, and thermal radiation; these physical parameters control the analytical results. Graphene nanoparticles are used to analyze the present study, and the value of the Prandtl number is fixed to 6.2. The graphical representations help to discuss the results of the present work. This problem is used in many industrial applications such as Polymer extrusion, paper production, metal cooling, glass blowing, etc. At the end of this work, we found that the velocity and temperature profile increases with the increasing values of the viscoelastic parameter and solid volume fraction; additionally, efficiency is increased for higher values of thermal radiation.

The hybrid nanofluid has a remarkable feature in enhancing the heat transfer process and is widely utilized in manufacturing industrial applications. Thus, the present numerical analysis inspected the magnetohydrodynamic hybrid Al2O3-Cu/H2O nanofluid flow towards a permeable stretching/shrinking sheet in the occurrence of quadratic velocity. The governing equations are converted to the similarity equations and then solved numerically in the Matlab bvp4c program by varying several controlling parameters. An increment in the nanoparticle volume fraction from 0% to 2% and 4% increases the wall shear stress past a shrinking sheet, by almost 6.3% and 12.6%. There is a significant enhancement in the convective heat transfer rate, approximately 36.2% when the suction effect dominates about 19% in the boundary layer flow. Further, this study confirmed the subsistence of non-uniqueness solutions in the hybrid Al2O3-Cu/H2O nanofluid for a particular range of the shrinking parameter, while a unique solution appears in the stretching case. Stability analysis demonstrated the positive smallest eigenvalue in the first solution and thereby clearly specified a stable and attainable flow.

This article deals with the heat transfer in a Walter's liquid B fluid through a stretching sheet subject to elastic deformation. We have incorporated the combined effects of aligned magnetic field and viscous dissipation. The effect of viscous dissipation regulating the heat transfer is considered. In addition, prescribed power law surface temperature and prescribed power law surface heat flux boundary conditions are introduced. The transformed non-linear coupled governing equations are solved analytically using hyper geometric function. The effects of various embedded pertinent parameters on velocity and temperature profiles are well discussed with the aid of appropriate graphs and tables. Our results are verified with previously published results of some noteworthy researchers. It is found that the augmenting aligned magnetic field strength reduces the flow velocity and the related momentum boundary layer thickness.

In the present article, we have investigated the influence of inclined magnetic field on Walter’s Liquid B fluid flow through stretching sheet. Elastic deformation and Rosseland diffusion approximation for radiative heat flux are considered. With the help of similarity transformation the flow and energy equations are solved analytically by using confluent hypergeometric method. Results for various physical parameters are presented through graphs. It’s also noted that the increasing values of elastic deformation parameter increase the local Nusselt number.

A steady-state, two-dimensional flow of Rivlin-Ericksen magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) fluid flow induced by stretching of the sheet of porous medium considering heat and mass transfer is investigated in the present analysis. The fluid flow is influenced by a uniform magnetic field. The inverse Darcy model, as well as thermohydrodynamic characteristics, is taken into account. Within thermal analysis effects of temperature-dependent heat source/sink, viscous dissipation, heat generation due to the elastic deformation, and thermal radiation are considered. Mass transfer is concentrated to chemically reactive diffusive species by means of first-order chemical conversion rate. The similarity transformations are employed to convert highly non-linear governing partial differential equations into a set of ordinary differential equations. Then the analytical results of the temperature and mass transfer equations are expressed in the form of Kummer’s function for two different cases namely prescribed surface temperature and prescribed heat flux cases. The presented closed-form analytical solution of this research can be used as a benchmark solution for the results of numerical methods and can find possible industrial and technological applications in fluid-based systems involving shrinkable/stretchable materials. The steady two-dimensional boundary layer flow past a stretching flat sheet in a water-based ferrofluid is investigated. The spatially varying magnetic field is created by two line currents. The similarity method is applied to transform the governing equations into a system of coupled ordinary differential equations. Numerical investigations are performed for ferrofluids, the suspensions of water, and three types of ferroparticles (magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and Mn-Zn ferrite). The impact of the solid volume fraction, the surface stretching parameter, and the ferromagnetic coefficient on the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles, the skin friction coefficient, and the local Nusselt number are analysed for the three types of ferrofluid.

Viscous nanofluid flow due to a sheet moving with constant speed in an otherwise quiescent medium is studied for three types of nanofluids, such as alumina (Al2O3), titania (TiO2), and magnetite (Fe3O4), in a base fluid of water. The heat and mass transfer characteristics are investigated theoretically using the boundary layer theory and numerically with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient, and local Nusselt number are determined. The obtained results are in good agreement with known results from the literature. It is found that the obtained results for skin friction and for the Nusselt number are slightly greater than those obtained via boundary layer theory.

The linear stability of two-dimensional flow of a viscous electrically conducting fluid permeated by a uniform transverse magnetic field over a flat porous deformable sheet is investigated when the sheet is stretched in its own plane with an outward velocity proportional to the distance from a point on it. Since the flow has curved streamlines as in a stagnation point flow, its stability is examined with respect to three-dimensional disturbances in the form of Taylor-Gortler vortices. Using a numerical method, the differential equations governing stability are integrated for various values of the suction(R) and magnetic(M) parameter. It is shown that the flow is stable for all values of R, M and non-zero values of the dimensionless wave number \(\overline\alpha \) Further for fixed \(\overline\alpha \) and R, the decay rate of the disturbances increases with M. This study is likely to be relevant to certain metallurgical processes where a magnetic field is used to control the rate of cooling of a stretching sheet by drawing it through a coolant.

Exact similarity solution for the viscous flow due to stretching surface in the presence of magnetic field is derived. Further, exact solutions for the temperature distributions in terms of Kummer’s functions are obtained. Two cases of heat transfer are considered: the sheet (i) with prescribed surface temperature, and (ii) – the prescribed wall heat flux. Both the cases are further extended to study the heat transfer due to suction and injection. A simple relation for the two cases of heat transfer is obtained.

In this report heat and momentum transfer to continuous, accelerating surfaces is investigated. These surfaces resemble actually occurring surfaces, e.g. those of an extending sheet or a filament in the first part of the spinning zone. The behaviour is compared with that of boundary layers on a surface of finite length and on continuous surfaces with constant velocity. The report consists of three parts. In part A a systematic formulation of the conservation equations of momentum and energy is given. Part B contains the numerical results and part C consists of two applications. Formulated in dimensionless quantities, the acceleration causes higher momentum and heat transfer in the case of a flat surface. On cylindrical surfaces however, the situation is complicated by the influence of the radius of the cylinder. Compared with the continuous, cylindrical surface with constant velocity, the accelerating surface shows a higher momentum transfer, but a lower heat transfer. The numerical results have been applied to the cooling of a monofilament. The cooling of a monofilament proves to be independent of the drawing speed, which compares well with the results obtained in practice.

The Prandtl boundary-layer theory is extended for an idealized elastico-viscous liquid. The boundary-layer equations are solved numerically for the case of two-dimensional flow near a stagnation point. It is shown that the main effect of elasticity is to increase the velocity in the boundary layer and also to increase the stress on the solid boundary.

The laminar boundary-layer behavior on a moving continuous flat surface is investigated by two methods. One method involves the numerical solution of the boundary-layer equations. The other is an integral method, based on an assumed velocity profile that satisfies the appropriate boundary conditions. Good agreement is obtained between the results of these two methods of solution. The turbulent boundary-layer behavior on a moving continuous flat surface is investigated by the integral method only. Equations for the boundary-layer thickness, displacement thickness, momentum thickness, and skin friction are presented for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. Comparison is made with the boundary-layer behavior over a flat plate of finite length.

The flow of a viscoelastic fluid past a stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is considered. An exact analytical solution of the governing non-linear boundary layer equation is obtained, showing that an external magnetic field has the same effect on the flow as the viscoelasticity.

We study the MHD flow and also heat transfer in a viscoelastic liquid over a stretching sheet in the presence of radiation. The stretching of the sheet is assumed to be proportional to the distance from the slit. Two different temperature conditions are studied, namely (i) the sheet with prescribed surface temperature (PST) and (ii) the sheet with prescribed wall heat flux (PHF). The basic boundary layer equations for momentum and heat transfer, which are non-linear partial differential equations, are converted into non-linear ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transformation. The resulting non-linear momentum differential equation is solved exactly. The energy equation in the presence of viscous dissipation (or frictional heating), internal heat generation or absorption, and radiation is a differential equation with variable coefficients, which is transformed to a confluent hypergeometric differential equation using a new variable and using the Rosseland approximation for the radiation. The governing differential equations are solved analytically and the effects of various parameters on velocity profiles, skin friction coefficient, temperature profile and wall heat transfer are presented graphically. The results have possible technological applications in liquid-based systems involving stretchable materials.
