Abstract

We report two specimens of retroplumid crabs from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (N Italy), ascribed to Retropluma craverii (Crema, 1895), known to date only from the Pliocene of Pie- monte. The re-examination of the holotype together with the good state of preservation of the studied specimens has allowed a re-description of this species, poorly known to date.

Four species of brachyuran crabs are recorded from the Pliocene (Piacenzian) clays of the Apennine Mountains, all collected in natural gullies around the Castellarano and Monticelli di Quattro Castella, Reggio Emilia (Emilia Romagna, N Italy). These species are already known in the fossil record of Italy, and are assigned to Calappa granulata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Calappidae De Haan, 1833); Chlinocephalus demissifrons Ristori, 1886 (Euryplacidae Stimpson, 1871); Goneplax rhomboides (Linnaeus, 1758) (Goneplacidae MacLeay, 1838); Monodaeus bortolottii Delle Cave, 1988 (Xanthidae MacLeay, 1838). Chlinocephalus demissifrons and Monodaeus bortolottii are reported for the first time from Emilia Romagna.

Since de Saint Laurent (1989) clarified the retroplumid condition of Retrocypoda almelai, subsequent authors, with some exceptions, accepted this systematic placement (e.g. Beschin et al., 1996;De Angeli and Beschin, 2001;De Angeli and Garassino, 2006;Feldmann et al., 2006;McLay, 2006;Feldmann and Portell, 2007;Hyžný and Müller, 2010;Schweitzer et al., 2010;De Angeli et al., 2011 andHyžný et al., 2016). We can add in support of the retroplumid condition of Retrocypoda, that besides the contrasted presence of modified and reduced sternite 8 and reduced coxa of P5 (Via, 1969, p. 335;de Saint Laurent, 1989, T7, fig. ...

Extant and Miocene-Pleistocene retroplumids prefer deep water with muddy or muddy sand bottoms, in contrast to the Paleogene fossil record (de Saint Laurent, 1989;Collins et al., 2003;De Angeli et al., 2011;Baldanza et al., 2013;Gǎsparič and Hyžný, 2014). Retrocypoda dwelt in muddy sandy or sandy bottoms, in shallower waters from inner to outer continental platform. ...

The decapod crustacean Retrocypoda almelai Via Boada, 1959 is reported from Bartonian (middle Eocene) strata of Soh (North of Isfahan, Iran) and represents the most oriental record for the species, hitherto considered endemic and restricted to the western margin of Tethys. This finding is important to understand the paleobiogeographic distribution of retroplumid crabs, which were abundant during Late Cretaceous in America and Africa, but today their representatives are restricted to the Indopacific region.
... Discussion. De Angeli et al. (2011) revised Retropluma craverii based upon two specimens from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (Emilia-Romagna), pointing out some morphological characters not observable in the original description, such as the very elongate and narrow rostrum, the wide orbito-frontal margin distinctly sinuous, ending with a well-developed forward directed tooth, the dorsal surface of carapace, with three transverse ridges, and the very elongated, flattened legs. These characters are visible on the studied specimens that are assigned to R. craverii. ...

Several specimens of anomuran and brachyuran decapods are reported from the late Pliocene clays (Argille Azzurre Fm.) at localities nearby Faenza (Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna), located in the foothills of Romagna Apennines (NE Italy). The specimens were assigned to species already reported from the Pliocene of Italy, but never previously recorded in this area. This new report enlarges our knowledge on the composition and distribution of the brachyuran decapods along the Pliocene coastline of the Adriatic Gulf of the paleo- Mediterranean Sea.
... The last one is known by the only Retropluma craverii, described for the first time by Crema (1895) from the Late Pliocene (Piacenzian) of Bra (Piedmont, N Italy). De Angeli et al. (2011) revised Retropluma craverii by two retroplumids from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (northern Italy), with a well-preserved pleon that allows describing morphological characters of the sternum and pleon in both sexes, and identifying some morphological characters, such as the very elongate and narrow rostrum, the wide orbitofrontal margin distinctly sinuous, ending with a well-developed tooth forwardly directed, and the dorsal surface of the carapace with three transverse ridges, similar to those of the specimens that are assigned to R. craverii. ...

A rich decapod fauna from the Early Pleistocene (late Gelasian-early Calabrian) of Poggio i Sodi quarries (Siena, Tuscany, central Italy) is here reported. Integrated biostratigraphical, sedimentological and paleoecological analyses have been carried out, and some paleoenvironmental inferences are also proposed. The studied decapod community is herein assigned to the upper bathyal; several paleoenvironmental factors (cool water conditions at the sea floor, clay soft bottom, nutrients, very low environmental energy and sedimentation rate) influenced and promoted the crustacean settlement.
... Goneplax Leach, 1814, was revised to include the following fossil species previously listed by Karasawa and Kato (2003): G. arenicola (Glaessner, 1960), G. craverii Crema, 1895, G. formosa Ristori, 1886, G. meneghinii Ristori, 1886, G. gulderi Bachmayer, 1953, G. saccoi Crema, 1895, and the fossil and extant G. rhomboides (Linnaeus, 1758). Goneplax craverii had been previously assigned to Retropluma Gill, 1894(Retroplumidae Gill, 1894 by Beschin et al. (1996) (see also De Angeli et al., 2011). New, well-preserved specimens from the Miocene and Pliocene of Italy nevertheless necessitate a revision of the fossil species of Goneplax. ...

A revision of the fossil species of Goneplax Leach, 1814, has resulted in the assignment of four fossil species to Goneplax, but only G. gulderi Bachmayer, 1953, and G. rhomboides are considered as valid. Goneplax craverii Crema, 1895, previously assigned to Retropluma Gill, 1894, G. formosa Ristori, 1886, and G. meneghinii Ristori, 1886, are regarded as junior synonyms of G. rhomboides, while G. sacci Crema, 1895, is considered a nomen dubium. Albaidaplax n. gen. is here erected to include both the Italian specimens from the Miocene of Rio Popogna (Livorno, Tuscany, Italy) and the Spanish specimens from the Pliocene of Guadalquivir Basin (Seville, Andalusia, Spain) previously assigned to G. gulderi. Finally, Ommatocarcinus arenicola Glaessner, 1960, from the Late Oligocene-Middle Miocene of New Zealand, is assigned to the extant Neogoneplax Castro, 2007, constituting the first report of this genus in the fossil record.
... Six extinct species of Retropluma are now on record: †Retropluma gallica (Lower Eocene, southern France), †Retropluma eocenica (Lower-Middle Eocene, Spain and northern Italy), †Retropluma cf. eocenica (Lower Oligocene, northwestern Italy), †Retropluma laurentae (Miocene, Sabah, Indonesia), †Retropluma borealis (Upper Miocene, Denmark), †Retropluma craverii (Pliocene, northwestern Italy; see also De Angeli et al., 2011a), and †Retropluma slovenica (Lower Miocene, Slovenia). The northernmost occurrence, at 55°N, of Retropluma is †Retropluma borealis from the Upper Miocene Gram Formation in Denmark. ...

A decapod assemblage consisting of three species is described from the upper Langhian (lower Badenian) of the Tuzla Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The assemblage is dominated by Retropluma minuta sp. nov. (Brachyura, Retroplumidae) and accompanied by Munidopsis salinaria sp. nov. (Anomura, Galatheoidea) and Portunus monspeliensis A. Milne Edwards, 1860 (Brachyura, Portunidae). Based on the calcareous nannoplankton, the studied assemblage is assigned to the upper part of the NN5 Zone. The studied assemblage is considered to have inhabited a shallow, near-shore depositional setting, as suggested by the microfossil association. Munidopsis, Portunus and Retropluma have previously been reported from Slovenia, the area closest to the Tuzla Basin with known decapod fossils. Contrary to shallow-marine settings of the localities studied herein, Munidopsis and Retropluma from Slovenian localities are reported from deeper-marine settings. The occurrence of near-complete individuals of Retropluma minuta sp. nov. suggests a wider bathymetric range of the genus in its evolutionary past than it has today.

A new decapod crustacean faunule is described from the early Miocene of the Slovenian part of the Styrian Basin. The Ivnik Beds exposed at the Činžat locality contain seven species: Calliax michelottii (Axiidea: Callianassidae), Lepidophthalmus paratethyensis sp. nov. (Axiidea: Callianassidae), Jaxea kuemeli (Gebiidea: Laomediidae), Styrioplax exiguus (Brachyura: Chasmocarcinidae), Goneplax gulderi (Brachyura: Goneplacidae), Neopilumnoplax pohorjensis sp. nov. (Brachyura: Mathildellidae) and Retropluma slovenica sp. nov. (Brachyura: Retroplumidae). Numerous specimens of well-preserved Styrioplax exiguus permitted its redescription and re-assignment of its familial placement to Chasmocarcinidae. Neopilumnoplax pohorjensis sp. nov. constitutes the first fossil occurrence of the genus known to date. The decapod association, as well as other faunal elements, suggests low-energy deep-water depositional environment with epibathyal water depth of more than 125 m. The studied locality is situated in the Ribnica–Selnica graben filled with sediments once deposited in the Central Paratethys sea. Based on the affinities of decapod genera of the Central Paratethys and the Proto-Mediterranean, we conclude that the exchange of decapod faunas between these regions was probably regulated by an anti-estuarine circulation permitting an easier incursion of species from the Proto-Mediterranean into the Paratethys and simultaneous hindering the Paratethyan endemics (Styrioplax) from entering the Mediterranean.

A new species of the family Aclididae is described from the Pliocene of Emilia Romagna (Northern Italy) as Aclis aurisparva n. sp. This species was formerly reported as Chileutomia (?) sp. (family Eulimidae) but the finding of new, well preserved material has allowed a correct systematic placement. This new species and other similar Mio-Pliocene congeners, with apparently-polished- shells (Italian and Turkish material, under study) close to the A. attenuans - A. walleri group, allow us to hypothesise that the Aclis species with smooth shells (or with a spiral microsculpture) from the Mediterranean Upper Neogene are more numerous than expected.

Seven species of retroplumid crabs are recorded from Indonesia, Philippine Islands, Solomon Islands, Fiji Islands and New Caledonia. These include Retropluma denticulata (Solomon Islands), R. notopus (Fiji), R. plumosa (Fiji), R. quadrata (Philippine Islands), R. serenei (Fiji Islands and New Caledonia), R. laurentae n. sp. (Indonesia, Philippine Islands, Solomon Islands and New Caledonia), and Bathypluma forficula (Solomon Islands and New Caledonia). The new material considerably extends the distribution of retroplumid crabs eastwards in the Pacific and also extends the depth range of several species. There are now ten extant species of retroplumids known in two genera: Bathypluma de Saint Laurent, 1989 and Retropluma Gill, 1894. Although larval development is unknown, their small egg size suggests that retroplumids have indirect development. Three fossil genera, containing eight species, are recognized: Costacopluma Collins & Morris, 1975, Retrocypoda Via Boada, 1957 and Loerenthopluma Beschin et al. 1996. Some of the fossils placed in the Retroplumidae probably belong to the Palicidae Bouvier, 1898. An analysis of recently discovered fossil retroplumids shows that this family first appeared in the Proto-Atlantic Ocean during the Late Cretaceous, but became extinct in the Atlantic by the Pliocene. The family is now only found in Indo-West Pacific seas.

The Piacenzian section of Campore (Northern Italy) has been used to determine the paleoecological significance of the muddy upper bathyal mollusc associations of the Mediterranean Pliocene. By employing computer-based strategies (cluster and rarefaction analyses) a Korobkovia oblonga–Jupiteria concava paleocommunity type (KJ pt) has been defined. The KJ pt comprises a mosaic of local paleocommunities and paleocommunities whose taxonomic and trophic structures are mainly controlled by oxygen content, sediment accumulation rate, turbidity, and trophic resources. Comparison with mollusc coenoclines recognized in Northern Italy (Rio Merli and River Reno sections) suggests that the KJ pt is bracketed between the deepest muddy circalittoral paleocommunities and the deeper bathyal Bathyspinula excisa–Austrotindaria pusio unit (preliminarily described for the Rio Merli section). The KJ pt is very common in Northern Italy outcrops even though reported by previous authors with different names. We interpret this paleocommunity, which does not go beyond the Middle Pliocene, as the last evidence of an upper bathyal environment in the Neogene climatic-oceanographic regime of the Mediterranean.
