Abstract

Apostolepis vittata (COPE, 1887) is known by a specimen from Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Another two specimens were found are described in this article, one from Serra do Roncador, and the other from Chapada dos Guimarães, both in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The species belong to the lineata group, characterized by having a small size, five dark longitudinal dorsal stripes, and snout too projecting beyond the jaws. They inhabit the southwestern region of Brazil and adjacent Bolivia, at Cerrado domain.

... Apostolepis vittata remained known only from its holotype, until Harvey (1999) reported two individuals from Bolivia (CM 2824 from Río San Julian, Provincia Nuflo de Chaves; BMNH 1907.10.31.62, from Puerto Suarez, Provincia German Busch), although remarking that these specimens differed greatly from the holotype, and the status of Bolivian populations should be reassessed upon availability of more material. Lema and Renner (2004) later reported the discovery of new specimens from Mato Grosso, Brazil. Lema (2002) described Apostolepis christineae on basis of an adult female (MCP 12515) from Estação Ecológica Serra das Araras, Barra dos Bugres, Mato Grosso, Brazil, separating it from Apostolepis vittata by presence of wide dark dorsal stripes (thin and incomplete, in A. vittata), absence of black gular collar, as well as absence of occipital scales. ...

Apostolepis Cope, 1862 is a speciose dipsadid snake genus. Among its more than 30 taxa, several species are known only from small series of specimens. The lack of basic information about morphological variations and natural history has resulted in a difficult taxonomic history of the group. We revisit the taxonomic status of the recently described Apostolepis roncadori Lema, 2016 and argue about its synonymy with a previously long-known species Apostolepis vittata Cope, 1887, considering their diagnostic characters either do not differ or the difference can be attributed to intraspecific variation.

Institutional acronyms are as listed in Sabaj (2016), except for UFAC (Coleção Herpetológica da Universidade Federal do Acre, Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil) and UFMT (Coleção Zoológica de Vertebrados da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil). Specimens of the new species were compared with 85 museum specimens of 15 species of Apostolepis (see Appendix) and data from the literature (e.g., Amaral 1925, Harvey et al. 2001, Lema 2003b, 2004, Lema and Renner 2004, Curcio et al. 2011, Albuquerque and Lema 2012, Nogueira et al. 2012, Borges-Nojosa et al. 2016, Cabral et al. 2017, Lema and Campbell 2017. ...

During a faunal rescue conducted at a hydroelectric power station constructed in a Cerrado savanna area in the state of Mato Grosso, a sample of five small stripe-patterned individuals of snakes of the genus Apostolepis Cope, 1862 document the existence of an undescribed species, which is named herein. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of scale counts, number of maxillary teeth and color pattern. The new species is most similar to in its coloration pattern. However, it is distinguished from these species by having a pair of triangular blotches covering portions of the third to sixth supralabials, a white nuchal collar, the shape of the fourth supralabial and the shape of the tip of tail, the number of supralabials in contact with parietals, the size of the anterior chinshields, the color pattern of the paraventral side, parietal and terminal scales, the width of dorsal stripes, and a distinct number of subcaudals. The new species occurs in areas within the Cerrado biome.

We present an updated checklist of Brazilian reptile species and, for the first time, its confirmed presence in federation units (26 states and the Federal District). Brazil has the third richest reptile fauna in the world, with 795 species: 36 Testudines, 6 Crocodylia, and 753 Squamata (72 amphisbaenians, 276 “lizards”, and 405 snakes). If subspecies are counted, these numbers increase to 842 taxa. Almost half (47%) of the Brazilian reptiles are endemic to the country, mainly amphisbaenians (76%), followed by lizards (54%), snakes (40%), and chelonians (16%). Nomenclatural changes and taxa included or excluded since the last checklist are discussed, as well as dubious or invalid state records.

Apostolepis intermedia is a xenodontine colubrid snake known only from the lost holotype described in 1898 from Miran-da, Mato Grosso do Sul. Here, we describe a second specimen collected in 1997 on the margins of Taquaruçu river, Anas-tácio ca. 66.2 km from Miranda. We present photographs and drawings of the specimen and compare it with the original description of the holotype and 11 other five-lined congeners.

We redescribe the rare elapomorphine snake Apostolepis longicaudata Gomes in Amaral on the basis of a detailed examination of the holotype and comparisons with new specimens from the Cerrado of Central Brazil. The new data include information on coloration in life, hemipenial morphology, and natural history. Two specimens identified as A. quinquelineata by previous authors are now attributed to A. nelsonjorgei, which seems to be the only species in the genus with subcaudal counts overlapping those of A. longicaudata.
