Organisational models in agriculture with special reference to small farmers

Abstract

Agricultural value chains can be understood as the systems of people, organizations and activities needed to create process and deliver agricultural products from producers to consumers. Over time and due to huge changes that have happened in the surroundings, agricultural value chains have become very integrated and complex. Small farmers can prosper by joining in modern higher-level agricultural value chains, but there are numerous obstacles, as well. The work presents the typology of organizational models for agricultural production that consists of the models organised by producers, agribusiness companies (processors, retail chains, and intermediaries), facilitators (governments, non-governmental organisations) and completely integrated models, established by some big companies. None of these models provides ideal solutions from the perspective of small producers. However, they say that the institutions, such as cooperatives and small farmers' organisations, present important mechanisms for including small producers in modern value chains and realizing the cooperation with agribusiness companies and other important players. This is also important for decision-makers and governmental bodies that should create a suitable environment and provide support so that small farmers and their organisations can integrate in modern value chains in a successful way.

Alternative food networks (AFNs) represent local food systems and short supply chain networks alternative to global food systems. These networks are often developed within rural-urban interfaces and take various forms, due to the high propensity towards the innovative organization of the network. The aim of our study is to map the currently applied, distinctive innovative organizational models of alternative food networks by identifying the organizational innovations of these networks in available case studies. Adopting the lens of organizational sociology and using space-filling visualization, the study compares various forms of localized and spatially extended AFNs. The results of our comparative analysis suggest that main aspects of AFNs' differentiation are the models of network organization, applied coordination models, competences structures of the involved actors, nature of the intermediaries and their roles within the AFNs, and the level of customer engagement. Innovation processes within short food networks can be driven by the producer, intermediaries, and communities of consumers. We identified three types of AFNs defined with regard to the predominant direction of flows in the urban-rural interface: (1) AFNs localized within the borders of the city, (2) AFNs based on interconnecting the rural farmers located within rural settlements adjacent to the city and to the consumers in cities, and also (3) AFNs localized in peri-urban interfaces with distant customers.

This paper has a goal to point out causes and consequences of wrong agricultural policy in transitional period which caused that agriculture of Serbia suffers a huge damage which manifested itself through falling apart of big agricultural combinats, enterprises from food industry, agricultural cooperatives and small family farms. Big changes at the end of XX and at the beginning of XXI century reflect of agriculture, too, and demand a new conceptual approach to new situation. Authors of paper point out necessity of revitalization of cooperative system and other was of joining and connecting of agricultural producers, as well as need of bigger support to small family farms, by model in developed EU countries. On that way, agriculture of Serbia would successfully respond to complex requirements of globalized environment and turn its comparative advantages into competitive ones.

A l’heure où les problématiques d’épuisement des ressources fossiles et de lutte contre les émissions de gaz à effet de serre sont au centre des préoccupations économiques et politiques mondiales, les bioraffineries, en tant que systèmes de conversion des agro-ressources en énergies et produits bio-sourcés, semblent constituer une alternative. De nombreuses recherches sont alors menées pour étudier la soutenabilité de ces nouveaux modes de conversion de la biomasse. Cependant, il semble que leurs impacts économiques et sociaux soient moins considérés dans les études scientifiques mais aussi dans les politiques de transition énergétique, alors que les enjeux environnementaux attirent la plus grande attention. Fort de ce constat, ce travail interroge les retombées socio-économiques des bioraffineries, en particulier sur les territoires où elles sont implantées. En mettant en parallèle deux bioraffineries rurales françaises en développement, ce travail étudie leur ancrage territorial afin de mieux comprendre les enjeux organisationnels et cognitifs qu’elles sous-tendent. Ce faisant, agro-industriels, acteurs agricoles et acteurs institutionnels ont été interrogés quant à leur perception des impacts socio-économiques des bioraffineries. A l’issue de cette analyse, deux principaux résultats sont proposés. Le premier résultat montre que les acteurs territoriaux sont au cœur de l’émergence et du développement des bioraffineries. Le deuxième résultat quant à lui, fait apparaître six dimensions de l’ancrage territorial dans le cadre du développement des bioraffineries rurales.

Cooperatives cover a large part of the agricultural sectors and have substantial market shares in agri-food supply chains in the EU Western countries. They account for approximately half of agricultural trade in the EU. By contrast, in the EU Western countries, where farmer cooperatives are widespread and successful, agricultural cooperation in Lithuania has developed intermittently in the last century. We still have very limited knowledge of why the country’s agricultural producers (especially smallholder farmers) are reluctant to cooperate in Lithuania. The aim of this study is to assess the level of the willingness to cooperate among smallholder farmers in Lithuania and to draw up the profiles of small-scale farms that participate in and intend to join cooperatives and, conversely, that do not participate in cooperatives and do not intend to do so. To achieve this goal, a representative survey of small-scale farms was conducted. Results of surveys carried out in 2019 in Lithuania on a group of 1002 small-scale farms showed that only 8% of the surveyed farms participate in producer groups or cooperatives, while another 8% intend to participate. Small-scale farms in Lithuania have weak market integration, with no bargaining power on input and output markets. The vast majority of small-scale farms are reluctant to participate in cooperative activities in Lithuania. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the profile of a small farm that tends to cooperate. The main social characteristics of farm managers and economic factors of farms willing to cooperate have been identified.

The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the role of reward-based crowdfunding in farm financing, with a focus on its likelihood of success. The study uses a sample of 1,566 projects from the Kickstarter platform between 2014 and 2020. We added the level of urbanisation and relative importance of agriculture in the country's economy to the basic elements to assess the importance of the crowdfunding. We run a logistic regression model to investigate factors that motivate investment decisions. We discovered a statistically significant negative correlation between the self-set campaign goal and project success, as well as a small positive impact of number of backers and a positive impact of the importance of agriculture in the country's economy on crowdfunding success. In an era of rapid innovation and the rise of social networks, this paper contributes to the current literature on the agri-food industry's reword-based crowdfunding approach.

Purpose Literature contributions to agricultural cooperative (AC) entrepreneurship model are fragmented and show some significant limitations. The purpose of this paper is to identify the existing important barriers to this entrepreneurship model as well as to group them into respective themes. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) of peer reviewed journal articles was carried out by the authors in well-known databases, such as Scopus, Emerald, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, IDEAS/RePEc search and Web of Science. In total, 78 articles from 26 different countries during 2010–2019 were collected. Findings A large number of important barriers are identified in the literature and meaningful dimensions of these barriers are also revealed. Practical implications The study has important implications regarding the ways to improve the effectiveness of AC model. Researchers and practitioners can use the results presented in this study for further development of this model. Originality/value This study presents the important barriers in AC model in global scope analytically and groups them into meaningful themes, which significantly differentiate the present SLR study from those published so far.

Agriculture is an essential branch of the economy, and ways to improve its contribution to the overall economy should be constantly sought. One of the ways and methods to achieve this is by associating in different forms. The main objective of the paper is to analyse the importance of different connection models and the need for the improvement of clustering in agriculture. However, there are different connection models, for more detailed consideration in this paper, cooperatives and clusters were chosen. The focus of the analysis is on Serbia because there are natural preconditions for the development of agricultural production as an economic activity. The interpretive content analysis of secondary sources was used in this article to achieve the paper's objective. The paper presents a theoretical analysis of the cooperatives and clusters in agriculture. The paper consulted a rich literature review. The research was conducted based on the analysis of available sources of literature. The motive of the research and analysis in this paper is the more profound understanding of the benefits brought by the association in clusters and cooperatives. The results of the analysis showed that cooperatives and farmer organisations can provide added value to agribusiness firms, which is a kind of benefit for everyone. The results of the analysis also showed that the clusters can combine local and global perspectives, which can be crucial for the development of agricultural activity in general, and, consequently, the entire economy. The conclusion could be combined for both types of mergers. By joining either in cooperatives or in clusters, resource strength is increased and synergistic effects are achieved that could not be achieved by individuals as members.

Agriculture is a sector that today demands even greater efficiency; thus, it relies extensively on the use of precision agriculture technologies: IoT systems, mobile applications, and other digitalization technologies. Experience from a large-scale EU-funded project with a consortium made up of several software companies shows that software companies have a different and unequal knowledge/understanding of agricultural processes and the use of precision agriculture in agricultural processes. This finding coupled with what is known about the standard process model for IT governance (COBIT) triggered the idea of a reference standard process model for agriculture (RSPMA), which we present in this paper. We applied the Delphi technique to assess the RSPMA and evaluate its potential implementation in the area of agriculture. A panel of 20 members from Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, and Serbia was established for the study. The majority of RSPMA elements were identified as appropriate for the use in agriculture by the panel. The study results show that RSPMA is suitable for use in this field.
