Abstract. During June, July, and August 2013 a total of 29 species belonging to 16 genera and
six families were collected in the hitherto unexplored state of Zacatecas, Mexico. Lestidae,
Calopterygidae, Coenagrionidae, Gomphidae, and Libellulidae as well as 28 species and 15
genera are reported for the rst time for Zacatecas State.
Key words. Lestidae, Calopterygidae, Coenagrionidae, Gomphidae, Libellulidae, new records.
Introduction
e Mexican state of Zacatecas has remained for a long time as terra incognita
odonatologica. e rst checklist of the Mexican Odonata provided by G-
S N-G (1996) had no records of dragonies for this state.
To date, Rhionaeschna dugesi (Calvert, 1905) (Aeshnidae) is the only species record-
ed from Zacatecas State (P G-S 1994 [updated 2014]),
so the territory is still practically unexplored (G-S N-
G 2007). For this reason, collections were made in order to amend this
knowledge deciency.
Study area and methods
Most of the Zacatecas surface is located in the Mexican High Plateau province and,
to a lesser extent, in the Sierra Madre Occidental province (M 2001). It is
traversed by the Tropic of Cancer at more or less the middle of its territory and the
altitude ranges from 1,000–3,200 m a.s.l. e range of its coordinates is: 25°09’–
21°04’N; 100°49’–104°19’W. It has an area of 75,484 km² (INEGI 2003). ere are
no important rivers, and most of the streams are temporary.

Collections were conducted at seven localities in the centre and southwestern part
of Zacatecas (Fig. 1), belonging to the municipalities of Jerez, Genaro Codina, Vil-
lanueva, Tabasco, Jalpa, and Juchipila, all of which have relatively high humidity,
moderate temperatures, and annual precipitations over 1,000 mm. Larvae were
collected in late June, and adults in July and August. e specimens of adults are
deposited in the Colección Zoológica, Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes
(CZUAA), and the larvae in the Colección Entomológica del Instituto de Ecología,
A.C. (IEXA).

Results
A total of 128 specimens belonging to 29 species, 16 genera and six families were
captured. Among them, 28 species, 15 genera, and ve families are reported for the
rst time. e record of Rhionaeschna dugesi (Calvert) of P G-
S (1994) was repeated. New families for Zacatecas State are marked with an
asterisk.

Discussion
Most of the odonate fauna here documented for Zacatecas belong to species with a
wide range in Mexico. Some of them even show an extensive altitudinal range such
as Hetaerina americana, Archilestes grandis, Argia anceps, A. pulla, Telebasis salva,
Orthemis ferruginea, and Pantala avescens. Likewise, the following species are typ-
ical of the Mexican High Plateau province: Hetaerina americana, Apanis agrion lais,
Argia anceps, A. extranea, A. fumipennis violacea, A. lugens, A. pallens, A.plana,
Enallagma praevarum, Hesperagrion heterodoxum, Ischnura demorsa, Rhion-
aeschna dugesi, Libellula saturata, and Pseudoleon superbus (E-M et
al. 2009). More signicant records are Argia harknessi which previously has been
reported only for the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán, Morelos, and Nayarit
(G-S N-G 2007) and Libellula comanche, which
has so far been reported only for Chihuahua, Nuevo León, and Sonora (N
et al. 2014); apparently, this is the southernmost record for this species.
e western part of Zacatecas State adjacent to the state of Jalisco, and the Sierra de
Valparaíso seem to be especially promising for further odonatological exploration.
